*Additional critique not discussed in the video, but still important to bring up.* 1. Elizabeth as a invulnerable sidekick Yeah, I get that some people think it's a cop out that Elizabeth is basically invincible in combat. She doesn't get hurt, she doesn't need direction, and the enemies don't even go after her. Sure, that's fair. But really, it didn't bother me. In fact, I liked how she tosses you ammo and salt from time to time, and that you can ask her to open rifts (thought truth be told this is a rather thin game play mechanic that could have been fleshed out way more). This adds a nice some cool comradery (is this a word?) to the duo. As we all know, "escort" quests, characters and missions have notoriously been terrible across the board as it's essentially babysit work, especially when you have to look after their health pools, guide them to objectives, match their run speeds, and what not. So pick your poison - because there's always give and take. 2. No final boss fight Guilty, kind of. Songbird is the natural and likely "boss" that they could have used, however anyone who played the game to the end knows that it's quite poetic the way his story ends and forcing him (or her, who knows?) into that role would have changed the dynamic between the characters and Songbird. This could have jeopardized his presence and overall purpose in the game to an extent, as well as lower the amount of empathy players garnered from his final moments. However, the final fight was nothing spectacular and Songbirds use in it was completely throwaway. Personally, I think the final battle is fine, nothing great, but it didn't wreck anything for me. 3. Gameplay that doesn't pay homage to Bioshock 1 or 2 As I state in the video, curb your expectations. This isn't Bioshock 3. Perhaps Bioshock Infinite is burdened by calling itself a Bioshock game, because the gameplay is quite different. Yeah, it's more run and gun, but it's not the Call of Duty Bioshock people say it is. Play 1999 mode, and see what i mean. The gameplay is different, but it still feels like Bioshock to me in spirit. There's so many other great things that are obviously influenced by the original games and that definitely respect the property, even if the gameplay isn't one of the best examples of it. So, just look at Infinite as it's own game and perhaps you'll be able to see it for what it is. Thanks for watching :D

Your point about Elizabeth is kinda like the other side of the coin to Sheva from RE5, where she does get attacked and you need to manage her inventory, give her ammo and keep her alive, which is one the main complaints from the RE comunity.

I really liked Bioshock Infinite. Elizabeth's design and AI were supposed to mimic an animated Disney Princess, and they achieved this, IMO. The cloud city of Columbia was a nice, bright break from the bleak underwater worlds of Rapture. The story itself wasn't amazing, but the revelation at the end is still one of my top gaming moments. The DLC does a lot to answer further questions people may have about that ending, too. The ironic thing Infinite predicted since it's launch seven years ago is how Comstock, and his religious & racist followers resemble a certain public figure who tried to turn the current U.S. into Columbia, but who is failing miserably after only four years, thankfully. Art often imitates and predicts life.

Just replayed Infinite for the first time since release. Definitely still think it's a masterpiece. Booker and Elizabeth's chemistry, presented through writing and top notch acting, is of the utmost quality for video games. The ending is one of my favorite in video game history. Gameplay is decent as linear fps games go, with fun gunplay and good AI, and the integration of the vigors is especially solid. Only section I don't like is the lady Comstock portion; feels drawn out and little like the devs were playing for time to figure out how to deliver a couple of key plot points without diverging from the tonal developments (darker, more desperate and uncomfortable atmosphere) they were going for.

Infinite on 1999 mode is an absolute favorite for me. use of vigors to debuff enemies and correct weapons are an absolute must, and often picking up different weapons instead of sticking to the same pair is pretty necessary. best part was the way that the difficulty encouraged nearly over-scavenging and exploration, which in turn allows the player to see more of the story/environment through the voxaphones and Cinema boxes on lower difficulties this isn’t as necessary, as you can heal and tank damage easy enough

I think this was the wrong way to have put it. What I would say is that in any story that involves fantasy/sci-fi elements, you have to suspend your disbelief somewhat. There will always be some things that don't quite make sense, so you have to accept those and get past them so you can engage with the rest of the story. The sort of implicit agreement you make with the audience is along the lines of 'look, I know this time travel idea doesn't totally make sense, but just imagine that it does and we'll go from there'.

Then the sudden horror when you realize that the system will never change now the oppressed have become the oppressors and are in fact way more brutal.

I’d never played a BIoshock game but it was one of the few games that I was compelled to play through over the course of a few days. The story was fantastic but I agree that it could have benefited from a better narrative exposition for explanation of what you actually experienced at the end. I confess I had to resort to KZread videos to help me understand the ending. Admittedly it was somewhat contrived regarding the “infinite” concept but the characters were truly the highlight and their relationship was paramount and endearing. I’m not a horror guy and was grateful that BI toned down the shock factor for my “sensitivities” to tell a compelling and engaging story that shines a stark and telling spotlight on how the choices we make can literally change EVERYTHING!!!

I often come back to this video because there's so much discourse around this game lately and sometimes this helps me to remember to not think in binaries. I adore this game because I played it at the perfect time in my life but I understand why a lot of people don't like it. Watching this reminds me that something you love can both be praised and criticized at the same time. Thanks, Downward Thrust

I will play Bioshock 1 or 2 again, but never play Infinite again. Once was enough, and even then I was pushing through it since it was not nearly as engaging as the first two.

I know how you feel that's why I buy BioShock 2 definitive edition and we'll buy BioShock definitive edition and skip out on BioShock infinite cuz once you play you know what to do when it's kind of boring there's no moral choices at all every choice in BioShock infinite is worthless

moscow vicent I understand the ending being confusing to some but I don’t think that’s really a flaw of the game. That’s more on the player. I understood the story just fine all the way through and thought the themes were great. And I would say the story is definitely better than Bioshock 2

I don't dislike infinite its just not what i want when playing a Bioshock game, the immersive aspect is gone, there is no character to the people u kill, etc.. And again i don't hate the game, it's just not a Bioshock game to me.

I'd argue that in infinite there is a lot of character in its people. While the antagonists like Comstock or Lady Comstock have no character whatsoever, Booker and Elizabeth carry that department honestly. I love how she reacts to the things you find while exploring. The atmosphere is inmersive , but in a different way. The atmosphere of 1 and 2 is more of horror, while Infinite isn't. I enjoy the atmosphere for what I is and I appreciate the change since I feel like Rapture has offered all it could by Bioshock 2 ending, but there's no doubt that the entry to the first game is much stronger than Infinite.

@@tokisugar true, but not what i meant i mean like the people u kill have 0 motivation, no reason to kill you and no reason to put so many people in danger just to kill u. Also the individual people u see have no character, while in 1 and 2 u sometimes see splicers talking about stuff and they have a real reason after there attacks. And why i think it's less immersive is pure because of the fact that u Just keep killing the same couple guys hundreds of times. Not because i think the world it self is unimmersive. But i have to agree with you on that Booker and Elizabeth carry the whole game.
