Hi Mark, I also use the non Biorb replacement filters as the cost is a no brainer and you can reused/recycle the plastic holder. I have never changed my air stone so l have ordered some on your recommendation. Look forward to your vac review.

As I mentioned. Id rather spend that additional cost on buying different biOrb decor to change my tank's appearance so it doesn't look the same all year round. Hey Rebecca. Really nice to hear from you. I haven't done it... but I certainly do know everything about it! :) Lol. People have been using it (or Polyester Fibre Filling) for some time as an alternative means to polish water as part of their filter systems. In most cases it is used to replace activated carbon in filter systems. I haven't heard anything negative about it (ever!) so i would say all is fine (from the reviews I've seen over the past few years). Activated carbon has very limited use in an aquarium, although really good for certain things... such as dealing with medication. There seems to be a growing trend of "going back to basics" on certain things. People are getting a bit sick of big brand products that really over claim what they do? The industry is full of false claims with no legal reason to evidence these (all driven by sales!). Tank nitrate reduction is another example! I'm fully behind things that save people money and effort, especially on the very basics they need for an aquarium. This includes this polyfil/ poly fibre lining. Go for it!! If you try it, and see clear benefits, please let me (and Channel Subscribers) know,. Best wishes to you, Mark

Hi Amy. Thanks for watching and adding comments. You can find a link to this type of product in the video's Description but here it is anyway: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283951082242 The last time I purchased this product it did not contain zeolite and I would say that this is still the case - as adding zeolite tends to push the price up! Many, many, products may look like they have zeolite, but this tends to be a 'pumice type' material/mineral (i.e. very similar to Seachem Matrix). But, saying all that, a very small amount of zeolite is okay. But its main value is to deal with emergencies, especially ammonia spikes, an is useful for such scenarios. It is an easy test for the presence of zeolite... just add water and if it fizzes/hisses it is zeolite. The cost of the alternative 'sponge sets' such as the one in the link above is very low. If you are concerned about the activated carbon, or similar products (and whether they contain zeolite), you may wish to also purchase a dedicated 100% pure activated carbon product which has suitable granular size for use in the biOrb filter. Check out ATM Supernova, which is similar size to the bOrb activated carbon, in terms of its granules, but is a very high quality pure carbon product. BTW I have tested the (black) sponge filter type versions which are sold as being already "impregnated with activated carbon" but I don't think they perform as well as real activated carbon granules. If your aquarium water starts to have a stagnant (aquarium) water smell, that is a good indication that the activated carbon you've added isn't doing a good job (your fish will be fine but your home will be a bit smelly! Great video. Is there an electric filter that I can buy and put intisde this to keep the water clean like they have in stores? Like a filter that has electric pump and I just replace or clean the filter not the whole tank. Thanks a lot! Ours gets green cloudy in 2 days and in two weeks looks terrible. Can't keep cleaning this every 2 weeks! It's so much work takes about 4 hours cleaning the decorations, rocks inside the bowl etc

Hi. Yes, there are self contained systems that you could add in. These tend to be fairly bulky and i'm not sure you would like how they would look in the tank. You will always need to do weekly water changes though and clean out any alternative filter system you add in. I'm not sure an alternative water filter system system will solve your problem or reduce the need for maintenance. An external filtration system (like how aquarium shops manage their water) would not really work with a biOrb as they require water outlet and inlet pipes (to remove the water, filter it, and then return it). The problem you have is less about the filter system but is more about water quality issues that need to be addressed. If you sort out your water quality then the standard biOrb filter system will maintain a clean looking tank and maintenance should become far easier. You would need to do some level of maintenance weekly (water change being the minimum needed - but this dependent on how many fish you have). If you are suffering green water and algae growing on decorations etc this is a good indication that your tank has a very high waste level. If you can let me know what your water quality readings are (take a reading just prior to needing to change the water) I can then advise you on how to fix the issue. Let me know your tank readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH please. Also, can you let me know the size of the tank and how many, and what type of, fish you have? Best wishes, Mark

Love your videos! I didn’t see a link or anything to the filter sets you are using. I don’t relish spending all that money for the Biorb ones...would love to know where you got them. I have seen some on Amazon but they say they have zeolite in them...Thanks again! Also, just a suggestion, it would be very helpful for you to put links to the products you’re using in the videos so that you don’t have to answer a million questions about where to get those things. I always appreciate having that info for all of the videos I watch.

Your water readings have made my day! I'm sure that nitrite will start to convert to zero soon (remember the bacteria associated with nitrite conversion take a little bit longer to establish). Use ATM Colony next time...for your 45 litre! Spend the filter money you've saved on more biOrb ornaments/decor and enjoy the ability to change the tanks scenery throughout the year!

We really wanted the large white pebble ornament but everywhere seems to be out of stock, maybe covid is causing supply issues. The filters were a bargain really they even come with 4 air stones too! You're very welcome, we were chuffed to find a channel like you have created to help us. There's things you have shown us which we would have completely overlooked and got massively wrong if we hadn't of found your videos. Not to mention the right kit to buy. Ammonia 0 today again! Nitrite .50. Will prob do a mid week water change tomorrow but things are looking good!

Hi. My Bio Orb is not getting clean. My filter use to look like yours when I changed them. The last 2 changes my sponge looked very clean. But my water doesn’t. My water had been green for the last 2 months. Even replacing half the water (4 gallons). The pump is working. But not lots of bubbles rising. Any idea what I should do? Thanks Vicki

Hi Vicky. If your water has a green tinge this is very likely to be an algae bloom (not harmful to your fish... but not nice to look at! The main cause of this is high levels of tank water nutrients (either nitrate or phosphate, but most likely to be nitrate). Higher nitrate levels will be related to: The nitrate levels in your tap water and in your aquarium (Can you let me know what your nitrate readings are?) Too much fish food/waste building-up in the tank (this increases water nutrients) Not undertaking regular/ sufficient water changes (amount of water removed and the frequency of changes). Too many fish (use 1" of fish per gallon as a guide to how many) Things to do: Use a gravel vac on a regular basis to remove waste materials sitting under the ceramic media (ideally every week or two weeks): amzn.to/3udfwRd Undertake 1/3rd tank water changes every week Try to limit tank nitrate levels to below 20 parts per million, ideally less than 15ppm Avoiding overfeeding fish. A small pinch of food provided once per day is sufficient. Alongside nutrients the other key thing promoting algae is too much light. Just like plants, algae use photosynthesis to grow and develop. Reducing the tank's light level and frequency (time left on) will also help to reduce algae when there is an issue. Hopefully some or all of the above should get your tank and water looking clean. Let me know if you need any further advice. In terms of the air flow issue. I don't this is related to the above water quality issue but is more likely to be due to having some water in the air line (air pipe). Hello, I’ve seen a couple of your videos already. I’ve purchase a 2nd hand 16gallon (I think) Halo BiorB and would like to know if it’s safe to use the ceramic media it comes with. I’ve wash and scrub over 6 times, and left in water for 48 hrs, washed it again. I ordered a new filter canister but still hesitant about the media because it would be too expensive to replace the amount the seller gave me but not sure what I can use to replace it.

Hi. It depends on whether the ceramic media still looks fairly clean? It probably does. I'm going to say that it would be fine to re-use. Giving it a good wash etc was a good idea... that's what I would do. In terms of the 48 hrs soak, did you use straight tap water (that is chlorinated) or did you apply a dechlorinator (such as AquaSafe) to the water first? If straight tap water i would suggest another soak (say 24 hours) in dechlorinated water to ensure that your remove any chlorine. For the soak I would suggest applying double the amount of AquaSafe (or other) described on the bottle. Once that's done it should be fine to go into the tank and for you to get the aquarium set-up. If you did want to replace with new you would just need 2 x 450g bags of the biOrb Ceramic Media for the tank. There is no need to add more than this. An alternative is called Alfagrog - which is the same product but tends to be cheaper. Best, Mark

Hi Jon. Congratulations on the second tank. Yes, great idea to use bacteria from a mature tank to help introduce beneficial bacteria. If your other tank has gravel in it too, it would be really worth adding a small handful of that in with the media too to help speed-up bb getting to into the media. I hope it all goes well. On the subject of close up fish shots. You've just nailed the biggest limitation in the video cameras I use, they have a restricted and fixed focal range so images tend to blur when the cameras are placed at a distance needed get really nice sharp shots. Hopefully Father Christmas will bring me a solution for that! LOL Really great to hear from you. What biOrb did you decide on and what fish are you planning to add? I will be setting up a new 60l biOrb soon (when it finally arrives as it has been on order for some time!) and I'm planning to focus on using a variety of native Brazil tetra species (Flame, Lemon, x-ray, and head & tail light) depending on what combinations I can get locally. The gravel is a good idea too, however I wasn't sure if it would be compatible with the BiOrb's unique filtration system and whether or not it could mess it up, I did move some ceramic media over though and placed that in between the bigger rocks. I chose a BiOrb Flow 15L for the bedroom, I think the acrylic is better suited to upstairs with it being lighter too. I have a Betta and 2 Cory's in it, although I was a bit scared of the ceramic media being too sharp and jagged for them, so I placed some large flat shells on top of the media for them to rest on... so far it's going well! Looking forward to seeing more videos in due course and the different tetras! Keep up the good work 👏

Your'e very welcome Jon. It is always great to hear from people and to hear what biOrb they have and how things are going. Sounds like you are already a dab hand with owning an aquarium. Re the biOrb filter system, and whether any other material would mess up the filtration system, it depends on the type of gravel material you have in the established aquarium and how much you add to the new (just needs a hand full). Finer gravel substrates and especially sand may do that, especially if placed in close proximity to the biOrb's central filter area. At the edges of the tank, less so. Putting some material in between the bigger rocks, as you have done, sounds like a great idea. That should work well. I suppose my point was more about adding the existing beneficial bacteria close to (directly in contact with) the biOrb ceramic media as this would allow them to quickly populate the ceramic media (and they can populate very fast with optimal water and temp conditions). Beneficial bacteria mainly occupies the ceramic media in a biOrb rather than the filter (which largely has a mechanical role). I think your corys and betta will be absolutely fine with ceramic media, I've never had a problem It is the same with Nerite snails, there seems to be a view that biOrb media is too rough for them but i haven't seen any issue with snails either. My only real negative thing about the biOrb media is that very small fish, when first added to a new aquarium, can get them stuck within it and die as a consequence. A few people have lost fish that way - but if you see one stuck, quickly get them out - they only tend to make that sill mistake once! :). I have cured my other issue regarding the regular build up of fish/ food waste by regularly using a vac. Problem fixed!! Interesting you have a 15l. Can i ask if you have had any problems with the amount of air flow going through the aquarium/bubble tube? I've seen some videos, that people have sent to me, where the air flow is much too high and needed to be regulated (to drop it down a bit). I'm trying to establish if it just a recent thing with 15l biOrbs or if it just depends on the luck of the draw - as to what biOrb pair pump that comes with the aquarium. Best, Mark.

Anything to help the process of setting a new tank up easier for ourselves. I'm curious as to what type of food you feed them? I.e does it float at the top so they can eat it before it sinks or does it sink and make a mess under the ceramic media? Just watched your video about the gravel vacs... I will definitely be getting one of those! Also yes you're absolutely right, the flow of the bubbles in this smaller tank is quite severe! I was unsure as if you could even alter the flow and turn it down, is that possible? It would help a lot as the bubbles are strong enough to splash out of the thumb hole when they burst at the surface. Also the betta would appreciate a slower flow I'm sure! Kind regards, Jon.

The best option is food that either floats or is slow sinking or one that stays alive! The aim is to get the fish to eat it before it sinks down into the ceramic media. For most of the summer i use a lot of live food (normally I use mosquito larvae and grow them myself - I'm yet to do a video on how to do that though, perhaps next year when the weather picks up again, as it gives a long season of giving free food). I generally prefer flakes for the reason that they tend to float for a bit or tend to remain in the water column longer. I vary between TetraMin and Bug Bites Colour Enhancing Flakes. If I need to go away, for a long weekend, and need to set-up an auto feeder I will use Hikari Micro Pellets as they are best suited to using auto feeders. Re the air flow. Yes, it seems that the airflow in 15l tanks is quite severe and, as you say, isn't very well suited to betta at all. I'm glad you've confirmed also. Basically you need to get an air flow regulator which you fit to the air flow tube between the air pump and the check valve. This will allow you to reduce the airflow. I'm going to do a video soon on how to do this as it seems to be an issue that people have.

The biOrb version works fine but it is totally over priced! I tend to use these these sort of products: amzn.to/40axAXQ. amzn.to/46FlbNT. The industry is full of companies making claims about how much better (or different) their products are so I am not sure how real the claim is that the product keeps the tank cleaner for longer. Instead, I would aim to keep the cost right down and to then be able to change these sort of products more often rather than be drawn into claims. Hope that helps. Best, Mark

Hi again. Not a problem. I tend to buy the sponges and then use another activated carbon product (such as amzn.to/3S9CAde or amzn.to/3Q3bguy). I always use activated carbon but it isn't a real necessity. Using carbon MAY help to remove food colouring, smells, tannin etc - generally it will probably help to keep clear ("polish") water. If you want to choose a suitable activated carbon for your tank you can do that and just get the sponge filters I described above and do your own thing. If starting a new tank (cycling) then i suggest just to stick with pure (100%) activated carbon, avoid products that contain zeolite (as zeolite will remove ammonia, which is an important nutrient to establish a bacterial colony). Once the tank is fully cycled then it would be okay to use zeolite type products to help reduce things such as ammonia. Best, M

HELP!!!!! I adore my Bio Orbs, but am experiencing issues with my 4 gallon. I replaced the filter yesterday and now it appears water is not being drawn into the filter. There's food and debris floating in aquarium. This has never happened before....

In terms of the floating food and debris... this sounds like you have a large build up of waste under your ceramic media. Did this material appear following the sponge filter change? I changed water, rinsed media, added all biologics supplied, changed filter. Yesterday, after feeding fish, I noticed uneaten food was floating around,,,, this is unusual as the filter usually draws any debris and waste into filter. It appears there’s no suction drawing in the water, it’s simply floating about. I’ve a second BioOrb and have no issues. Waiting for order of new filter stones. Best, Di

Hi Diane. Yes, the biOrb design of an "under gravel filter system" isn't as effective as we would all hope it would be. Using a battery powered vac is therefore a vital method of supporting the removal of waste build up. The new air stones will certainly help with the draw through the system. Have you noticed any reduction of air flow through the biOrb and how does the air flow compare to your other biOrb? I'm also wondering if your air pump is playing up. Also check that your airline (between the aquarium and air pump isn't holding any water as that would also reduce airflow. In terms of water quality and the floating waste you mention. What are your tank's nitrate levels looking like. Are they maintaining a reading less than say 40ppm? Best, Mark

That sounds good Di. Yes, certainly get a vac... they are an absolute "no brainer" for a biOrb (and at that price!?). Get the product I recommend in my videos... as I'm yet to find another product that works with ceramic media. A vac will really help with removing most of the waste material in your biOrb but are also easy for extracting water during water changes. Once you get one you'll wonder why you didn't get one earlier! Best wishes. Mark

Hi thanks for the heads up. I will check it out (is it an oversize sponge that fits outside of the filter cartridge and sits partly under the ceramic media?). I'm currently getting good results using ATM Outbreak as that is certainly bringing more material towards the sponge. Can you send me a link to it? Perhaps I will investigate the one you mention and it might be good to compare one tank using the one you mention and one using standard sponge with Outbreak. Thanks again for watching.

Yes its a sponge that is installed around the filter plastic cartridge...i already put the link here but i think that youtube taked out, maybe because of the terms and conditions of the comments

Thanks for the description Goncalo. Sorry, yes i do know all about those (I've seen other similar versions too)! Those were mainly designed to allow a different use of substrate material (such as smaller gravel, course sand) and to stop it getting pulled up into the biOrb filter system. But I am aware that some individuals have said they found they also help to keep the tank cleaner under ceramic media. I think we are probably talking about the same product.

This is the same as the upgrade sponge my friend used on her 30l a while back and she got from Amazon. As step-by-step says it is designed to converting biorb to replace the biorb gravel to use a different types of smaller gravel. the upgrade kit creates a new home for the bacteria you need as you have removed the biorb gravel they would normally live in. But she didnt get it to convert over to a new gravel as she read it can help improve tank water when using biorb gravel. All that happened was that the waste that would normal float towards the biorb sponge instead gets stuck in this new big one so it now gets all the dirt. It means you now have to move your biorb gravel around in the tank to be able to get down to this big filter so you can take it out and clean it and put it all back in again. She gave up with it and went back to using standard biorb sponges.

I wonder what is the opinion of pondguru method to improve filtration with biogravel media instead of the ceramic that comes with the aquarium? Also what is the chance to have healthy plants on a Biorb aquarium?

Hi Erick. I haven't used that type of conversion so cannot speak from my own experience. I prefer to stay with the system biOrb designed to ensure support the biOrb under gravel filter system is not impeded. I have heard different reports, both negative and positive, on the FilterPro and other similar conversions (such as Bio Rings). biOrbs brand new media (Pearl Media) seems to be a very good improvement on their standard Ceramic Media, see here kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2GHsLagd8KTYqw.html This new media allows use without any need for conversion and doesn't interfere with water flow through to the filter. It improves the collection of waste and provides better water conditions. Regarding plants, I have always retained healthy plants in all my biOrbs but it is important to choose a suitable plant species, see here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nINkmpqrYtDTndo.html If you would prefer to use a soil substrate with associated plants then I suppose the question I would ask is: Why choose a biOrb? An alternative aquarium, such as the Fluval Edge would be a better choice for sand or soil substrates as it doesn't rely on an under gravel filter system and would allow a wide range of plant species to be supported. To be honest I had an impulse to buy the Biorb because it look very nice but I was planning to install the aquarium after Christmas and all these days I have informed myself and realized of the pros and cons of the Biorb. I may have to stick with the Biorb because already purchased it but I would like to start with the right foot to avoid an early disappointment and quit. Therefore I learnt the original filtration might not be the best and may require a lot of time to make it work and avoid the fish to die. I will definitely will follow you advice and continue to learn from your channel and tips. Thks again.

Not a problem Erick. Don't worry there isn't anything wrong with the biOrb filter ceramic media and system... it works very well. I would always put practical experience over the sales pitch of different suppliers of products. I have 4 biOrbs all running very well, all with healthy fish and I retain those fish I've added to my aquariums. If you are using the media supplied with a new biOrb this is basically Alfagrog. This a well known filter media product that performs well. There are various published papers covering assessments of the performance of different media materials - this link is an example: aquariumscience.org/index.php/7-filter-media/. The establishment of a new aquarium does indeed take time (but this, depending on the method used) but if done correctly it shouldn't result in the loss of any fish. This applies to ANY aquarium (there is not a specific issue relating to biOrbs). Once a biOrb is cycled there should be no reason to experience the loss of fish. It is simply a matter of cycling properly, choosing the best fish species for your tank (and particularly your tap water quality) and not overdoing the numbers of fish stocked initially. As I said, those things apply to any manufacturer's aquarium, biOrb or not! Hope that helps. Best, Mark

@@StepbyStep-biOrb Thks again Michael, I appreciate the information and as I say I just want to start with the right foot and don’t want to rush. I understand about the cycling process and hopefully will go step by step ;-). I like Biorb aquariums except for the ceramic media where I have my doubts so that is why I was considering other options aside from adding some natural plants. I don’t want to mess with the filter so I have also purchased the special aquarium foam to add additional filtration and if I decide to add the biogravel avoid the small pieces to enter the filter. I will continue to see your videos which are very well explained and helpful.

Won't you crash the cycle by fully replacing the foam each month?

Hi. In a word "no". Unlike most other aquarium systems, which rely very much on the beneficial bacteria (BB) held in the filter system, in biOrbs the BB are largely present in the ceramic media (the ceramic media forms the biological filter). In biOrbs, the sponge filter has a mechanical function (to remove waste material). Removing, cleaning or replacing the sponge filter will result in no significant (or measurable) rise in ammonia, nitrite or nitrate (i.e. loss in BB). Hope that helps. Best, Mark.
