Probability and statistics on Khan Academy: We dare you to go through a day in which you never consider or use probability. Did you check the weather forecast? Busted! Did you decide to go through the drive through lane vs walk in? Busted again! We are constantly creating hypotheses, making predictions, testing, and analyzing. Our lives are full of probabilities! Statistics is related to probability because much of the data we use when determining probable outcomes comes from our understanding of statistics. In these tutorials, we will cover a range of topics, some which include: independent events, dependent probability, combinatorics, hypothesis testing, descriptive statistics, random variables, probability distributions, regression, and inferential statistics. So buckle up and hop on for a wild ride. We bet you're going to be challenged AND love it!
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

The greatest attribute that I give mr. Khan is his incredibly patient steps. He does not skip a simple step. Extremely thorough. This makes his online teaching the most powerful. I actually FEEL like I'm in a classroom. Thank you Mr Khan.

Haven't done math since high school and I took the "slow kids math" when I was there because I absolutely hated math. Now im in my final year of University and had to take a geographical statistics class dealing with exactly this type of math and my god, you are a life saver. 100x better and clearer than anyone could explain to me. A good teacher is truly the most important thing on this planet. You need to be a teacher who teaches teachers. If you were my academic math teacher in high school, I would have grasped mathematics without issue.

I do understan how you use possible outcomes here, but in this case the probability is 1/2. If we had a similar problem but with 1/5 probability of success then possible outcomse would still be 2^5=32, but the probability when x=1 wouldn't be 5/32, it would be 256/624, which is approximately 40%. I'm studying this topic and don't completely understand it, so if I'm missing something help would be really appreciated 🙂 What I'm trying to say is that possible outcomes may be two, but probability may 20% or 30% or 50% and probability is what matters not possible outcomes.

I am currently taking statistics and even when im not going to class and instead teaching myself from the book it has been pretty easy. I will admit that it depends on the teacher / professor you have, but most of the concepts in statistics can be easily broken down into simple formulas. Most of the time these formulas are given to you in the chapter corresponding to the topic. I know that not everyone is a self-learner, but I enjoy it so much. The breakthroughs you mentioned are so much more gratifying when I learn and understand something on my own than when I have a teacher / professor spoon feed me all the tricks. Making sure to keep a notebook of all your notes, formulas, and practice problems is a great resource to study from. I have used my notebook (usually one per class) strategy since probably my freshman year in high school, and I still use it today in college. I would definitely recommend people do this (most of the time I see people using Laptops in class) because it has helped me so much whenever I couldn't remember something, or had to use a formulas from earlier in the year / semester. The last thing I have to say is that I see a lot of people using expensive high end calculators. The problem with them is that they can do a lot of these functions in statistics for you. You may be asking why is that a problem? Well the problem is that letting the calculator do all the work for you does not help you learn at all. I prefer using one of the cheaper 20$ calculators and using basic math to work through formulas. This helps give you a better understanding of how the formula works, and it helps you remember the formulas better. Long post, I know, but hopefully this helps someone else out there who may be struggling in statistics.

Are you still looking for an answer to your question? n factorial, written n!, is n x (n-1)x(n-2)x(n-3)....3x2x1 for non-negative integer n. I've got a video called A Tiny Bit of Combinatorics that you might find useful. Also a whole playlist on the binomial distribution.

It’s the exclamation point! if you see 4! then that means 4x3x2x1, so the number behind the ! multiplied by every integer lower than itself that is not 0. 8 factorial is 8x7x6x5x4x3x2x1 :) hope that makes sense

I'm watching this and some other videos on binomial distributions, because I want to better understand the debate over whether Dream, one my favorite KZreadrs, cheated at speedrunning Minecraft --apparently by rigging the probabilities of ender pearl trades. The people who understand the math mostly seem to agree he cheated, and sadly I think they're probably right. But I love Dream and I want to understand the arguments for myself. Too many people are picking sides and getting in fights about it without first understanding the math.

I think by further understanding the math of this, it's easier to grasp that feeling of how actually low the chance is. Many people don't understand the math often states that "1 in a 7.5 trillion is not that impossible", or "it can still happen, he's just really lucky". And there's no way to make them flip their perspective because they haven't establish the sense of these numbers yet.

At the end of the lesson you said that Possibility of getting Zero tail is the same as possibility of getting zero heads. I think it should be corrected as "the possibility of getting five heads". This how you started: P(X=0) = 1, means No Heads, meaning all 5 are Ts. This and the other videos of probabilities and gnarly all math lessons which I am following are great stuff. Thank you Sir.
