I've noticed that when exported to mp4 it changes the levels.... Because listening from dolby in the same headphones sounds much better and more balanced than the mp4 file...Does the Atmos Master will sound like the mp4 o will it sound like playing it in the renderer???

Whereas with my bluetooth headphones I could successfully hear and localize a mono source moving all over the place in a youtube video, I still struggle to hear anything 3D with music on youtube with them. On apple music and another pair of (cheaper) headphones connected to my phone, it's the same story. And that still holds true for my own mixes in logic and monitor headphones (although I should practice a little more), with objects placed in a reasonable way and not moving like crazy, ambience reverbs set to surround output, and rendering to 2 speakers. In this video I just perceive all plain stereo, the only difference being the room ambience when you switch off-near-mid-far.

Het Alex , you are my main source for anything relating to Atmos mixing . I am remixing our album in Atmos and have wrestled with the binaural vs speaker mix and your insights into how to approach this conundrum are very helpful . Thank you for providing information that clears up the mysteries of this new and exciting way of presenting music to the listener 👏

Once again Alex , you explain the concept in a way that I can walk away saying “ I get it now . I’m finishing the second song from our album from 1996 and am trying to preserve the original feel and keeping the strereo mix glued together while hoping to make it breathe a bit more in headphones 👍

Hello Alex, As Always you make your explanations off a subject clear, short, to the point and no nonsense. I have seen most of your video"s (specially about Atmos, building a 7.1.4 at the moment) and learned the basics at Dolby-learning with is als to the point although it"s a bit out of time, they explain renderer 3.xxx) Hope they change it soon. I am looking for a course about mixing and mastering in Atmos,in the courses you offer you have one about logic, are you working on a Pro Tools version? Or do you give class courses? I hope you have something in the pocket. We emailed earlier about this, but private mentorship is a bit expensive if you want to know the ins and outs of Atmos. Hope to hear from you. Keep doing what you do in the video's, they are very good to understand and no bla bla. TOP regards, Luke

Thank you Alex! Trying to get my binaural headphone mix to match up with speakers is very challenging, as far as balances go. My binaural loudness averages about 1.5 db louder on the LUFS meter than my 7.1.4 speaker setup. Do you have this same issue? If so, which do you use for your -18 target?

Hey Alex, thanks for the great videos! I’m running a 2007 iMac Pro with Logic 10.7 and I’ve tried using spacial audio and have downloaded the Dolby Atmos Renderer. When I try to play back my binaural test, I don’t get anything out of the left speaker or headphone. I tried for days to figure out why but when I opened one of Logic’s “spacial audio” examples it wouldn’t play sound out of the left either. Stereo work fine, though. Can you think of any cause for this? Is the Renderer interfering with Logic’s binaural plugin, or what? Is my computer too old? Hope to hear from you and thanks, Gianni❤

Alex - Super interesting and informative! A couple of questions and maybe a clarification. For those of us that can't check our mix on a full Atmos setup, how do we know that the binaural mix doesn't fall apart in that fully realized multi speaker environment? Or should we care? A lot of us out here are interested in satisfying the minimum requirements for Atmos delivery that will sound good across Stereo, Binaural and a full setup. Also... for Apple Spatial Audio, I've seen other commenters on other videos note that Apple only reads / uses MID settings for the room simulation. If true, wouldn't that change the tonality of Off/Near/Far settings in the Atmos mix? I've been looking for proof of these statements but there isn't a lot of readily available info.

Thank you Alex for the response! So.. if Apple ignores the Binaural mix (off/ near/mid/far) and has their own version of spacial audio derived from the Atmos file… what’s their secret sauce or … differentiator? Apple is the largest streaming service in the USA with Spotify a close second (although Spotify is still way out in front worldwide) so it might be interesting to do a video on Apple’s version of Atmos / spacial audio since we all want to sound good what service most people are listening to.

@Daniel Houlemarde use logic with the apple renderer. You have to pan things closer to your head to minimize the "room" sound. Also, the apple settings sound closest to Dolby's near setting? Use good ole reverbs or 3rd party spacial planner to get "outside" of the atmos speakers. GL

Hey alex.. I noticed that .. somehow the mix ends up sounding different on iTunes or Apple music to be precise . I know you mentioned in a previous video that MP4 don't sound the way it should as reference. What in your opinion would be the closest reference feel outside of protools before it lands in Apple music. What is your go to reference for a binaural mix check outside of protools before distribution?

  • @bradsmalling7969

Anything sent to the LFE channel isn't processed binaurally. It's in the binaural mix but the binaural processing will always be set to "off." So the LFE channel in a binaural mix will be very "forward" and very "present." Use it very carefully and it can enhance a mix but be careful to use only what you need.

Hey Alex thanks for the video! Question I know UMG (i believe) recommends using a binaural render settings template so that certain objects are always set to certain render settings for example objects 26-46 are always set to near, 47-67 for mid and so on. If im understanding this correctly it seemed to be mainly for mastering reasons like imported multiple adm files into pro tools to do some mastering. Now that the album assembler is out does that workflow become less relevant in your opinion or are there other benefits to using the render settings template approach? Thanks

Alex, I use Logic, just learning Atmos, but it also has those near, mid, far binaural options, and my question is: Do the near, mid, far choices in binaural end up translating as the same as they sound on headphones - near, mid or far on speaker systems?

  • @DolbyAtmosMixing

Hello. The binaural settings have no effect on speaker playback. Tidal and Amazon Music respect the binaural settings chosen by the engineer and printed on the ADM master. Apple Music disregards these settings as they use their own. Hope this helps.

Hey there! If you're in Logic "Apple Renderer" the binaural settings are greyed out. This is because Apple uses its proprietary algorithm. But if you're monitoring using the Dolby Renderer, I would use LCR (OFF), Sides (NEAR), Rear (MID), Top (FAR)

A great mix is a great mix, whether done in mono, stereo, or immersive format. But to answer your question, some think that the 2.0 fold down from the Atmos renderer yields better results than a stereo mix. This is subjective...

For one easy example UMG does not require, and I strongly do not recommend using all of the Binaural settings. Since when do labels know best how to mix and master music ? NEVER !
