Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen grew up on the countryside and learned how to play in church. Traces of this upbringing can be heard on the albums he released on the renowned ECM label. For example, he has adapted Norwegian hymns as well as Bach chorals. He plays these beautiful ancient melodies alongside his original compositions, that have been described as wordless songs or abstract gospel.
Pianist Tord Gustavsen is a household name in Norwegian jazz. He has formed various ensembles, and has collaborated with remarkable vocalists such as Silje Nergaard, and Simin Tander. Gustavsen has incorporated various styles, from jazz and funk to folk, ultimately developing his own style. He made his breakthrough with his piano trio. 2022 will see the release of Opening, another trio album.

Phenomenal playing. Tord Gustavsen and his trio deserves so much credibility. The ambience they create when they play is just mind-blowing.
I was fortunate enough to experience this performance at the Bimhuis. It was enchanting.

I have been blessed to experience Tord and his trio on several occasions. Everytime uplifting, being able to hear and learn something new through his wonderful composing.
Tord's trio is one of my favorites. For me there is always an umbrella of textural, harmonic palette and rhythmic elements that fills my ear with satisfaction. His language is distinctive. I love the edgy moments, the whisper moments and the heavy lean on groove. Order and jumping off a cliff moments into a free fall.. I hope one day to be in the room and hear it live. Since "the ground", "tears transforming"et al..Ive loved.

There's a certain kind of majesty to this man's piano playing. The bass and drums are right there with him, conversing respectfully to what is being offered in real time from the leader. Nice writing, and of course Bimhuis ALWAYS makes it look and sound fantastic. If i EVER do get to Europe, Bimhuis is a must-be-there destination.
