I heard on the radio the inspiration behind this song. Billy and his crew were trying to make a song with a small segment of music they made and Billy thought why don’t we make a song about phone sex and they did it. It’s pretty funny

Even if it’s about phone sex, I always imagine it as an ode to thinking what you see in someone is real but it’s never going anywhere.

My dad interpreted it as a song where a lonely guy is fidgeting with a telephone trying to pretend he is talking to a girlfriend for comfort, even if he knows it is not a real relationship but a fantasy of his imaginations. You know, songs are legendary when it can have more than 1 meaning.

One of the greatest song writers of all time!

This track, "Sleeping with the Television On" and "All for Leyna" are my favorite songs from Glass Houses.

My favorite Billy Joel album. All the songs just Kill!!!!!

It took me longer to like this album (maybe 10 years) than any of his others, but the songs on here are compelling as punk, and for me the replay value is high.

13 will never come again, but this album is flat out special, like every track. Billy was always hitting it out of the park in that era, several greats ones before and after this one. Love the song.

My late beloved lived 1800 miles away. This reminds me of our late night phone calls.

1980 felt like a clear demarcation... I started high school that year, and suddenly disco, which it seemed would never end its reign, was over and Devo was a big new thing.

I got Glass Houses on vynil a few dats ago at an antique shop for 50 cents in great condition, which is almost unheard of these days. Regarding "Sometimes a Fantasy," I knew what the theme was about almost immediately, which was kind of risky for 1980 when you think about it. But, the song makes sense when you consider that most of the other tracks deal with some form of obsession or abnormality: whether personal ("You May Be Right," "All for Leyna," "Close to the Borderline") or societal ("It's Still Rock and Roll to Me").
