This is a a Tom T. Hall song. He’s the writer, and frankly he does it a lot better. The writer usually does because it comes from their life experience. Never cared for “covers”. There’s a sense of “plagerism” in a cover.
Damn, I thought this was a young Billy Joe until I read the comments below. And I've seen him twice in his older years.
