Your pronunciation is really clear and wonderful!!!! 감사합니다. ㅋㅋㅋ You say each consonant the same when you repeat. So, it is easier to distinct the change from ㄱ ㄲ ㅋ. Sometimes teachers do not understand that a changing the pronunciation even the slightest change can be heard and confuse a learner.

@@kooksitaval6721 the time doesn't change anything you know ? Some "learn" the alphabets in 3 hours (which personnaly I doubt that they know and can even read honestly and understand all what's behind the sounds and writing) and personnaly it took me more than 8 hours already => because I'm taking time to learn properly the sounds and exceptions for writings. Just stay consistant that's what will help you to grow. It's better that you go slower than going too fast and forget everything in a few days. Korean isn't easy you know ? Just remember how much time it took you to be intermediate in english (if you are) with school or any other language 👀 don't compare yourself to others or it will just bring you down. For being in intermediate level, you can take exams that exists (i think you have to pay) to mesure your level actually. And then with that you can know what to improve for vocabulary, gramar and so on. Being intermediate is actually level B1-B2 😅 where you can read pretty much anything, write sentences with gramar and speak quite normally ~ that's intermediate. I hope this can help you

I found that pronouncing double consonants is comparative to the little tsu in japanese that prolongs the next kana's sound. e.g. 아가 --> 아까 (a-ga) (a-gga) ちょっと (chyotto) the little っ prolongs the next kana's sound (と) from 'to' to 'tto' so you have that slight stop, tensing speech pattern when saying it. it's really hard to put it into words but i found it easier to understand when put it in this perspective.

Does it make some sense? At least that's what I listen to And thank you so much for everything! That tissue tip, I was a little shy to try it out, but it really works! It's never either sound. None of these sounds can match perfectly with English, so if you're thinking of them like English letters they will never match up. It's better to get used to hearing the sounds from real sources (TV, podcasts, etc.) and learn how they're used, and to avoid romanization completely.

Hello Billy! I take notes with every lesson, and I'm having a bit of a hard time writing the characters for the strong and double consonants. Any advice on figuring out the order or on making them easier to write? :)

Billy, I have a little question, I can already pronounce the double and strong consonants with no kind of problem. But the double consonant 상지읒 is kinda impossible to pronounce without moving the napkin. Is it possible to pronounce 짜 without moving it?

Yes, it's also possible :-) Try practicing by saying 아자 and 아짜 (practice it first by saying "앋 자" to help you prepare to make the sound).

All of those are real words, but you don't need them right now for this series. If you're curious, you can check any words in Naver's online dictionary :-)

It never becomes an "R" since the tongue isn't in that position. Here's a video that might help: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZGFotcp7Y5arpZc.html

Do males and females pronounce differently, as well, Billy? I noticed you and Your Korean Friend Hailey pronounce differently. She pronounces the doubles/ stressed consonants as [cha-kha-tah-pah]

  • @GoBillyKorean

Pronunciation would be the same. Each person might pronounce things slightly differently (more or less air, etc.), or they're trying to pronounce them more clearly (such as what myself and other teachers might do), but it's not due to being a male/female.

The sound isn't changing, but your ears aren't yet used to Korean sounds so your brain is *tricking* you into comparing them to sounds that you're familiar with (English or any other language). It will just take time and practice, but you'll be able to tell the difference between the sounds. I recommend listening to more Korean, such as by watching more variety shows or podcasts, etc. in order to get used to it more quickly.

It's best to not learn it that way, as it's never going to match that sort of system. Also it would be too difficult to memorize how the sound can slightly change based on where it appears in a word. The important thing is making the sound correctly, and finding where your tongue is in your mouth when you say it - if you can do this, the sound will turn out close enough without having to consider any more rules. There are already plenty of other rules to memorize when learning Korean, but this is fortunately not one of them.
