Had this originally on vinyl that I bought around 1984 from a used record store; just finding this live version now- in 2022. Stuff like this is so HOTT, it should be able to blow COVID back to where it originates - i.e. out of humans!

It was the era,the 1970's.There may be a lot of musicians emulating this style of music now,but it all started in the late 60's,early 1970's.No musicians were playing like this as late as 1965.This was a completely unique style combining jazz, rock, and Latin music.

Yay, Billham Cobly! Love the music, don't love the camerawork. Somehow the director managed to miss all the 'important' moments! Lots of close-ups of, er, things up-close, but I wanted to see the guys playing. Preferably all of them. At the same time. Sigh. The best thing about listening to records (as opposed to watching videos) is that when you close your eyes, the camerawork's always perfect...😁

Always good to see new Billy videos. This was for me the beginning of the end, though. Specifically, when they launch into double time. What? Turn such a fat and funky textured groove into freaking vaudeville? I don’t believe that Billy made a credible record after Shabbazz. The slide into Muzak started with a couple tracks on A Funky Side of Sings and continues to this day. Compare this version of Baron to that on Shabbaz. Night and day. And the original? Come on. I blame his sidemen, but he hired them. I’ve heard no one say any of this, and I know I’m gonna piss people off - but my heart remains broken as early Cobham is, for me, the greatest of all time. I would take Spectrum onto any desert island a happy man. But Drum n Voice? Come on.

Thanks for mentioning Shabazz. Never heard of it. Listen in. Brillant. After Spectrum I left. Red baron and the Jan Hammer Solo. Hard to top. Then for Jan Hammer Miami Vice. Good for his bank account. Not bad though. For TV. Zeitgeist. Maybe Cobham just likes to play live. Nevermind the musical relevance. You could be a bit more leniant. Cobham is in a way the mathematician of drums. Always precise and mathematicians tend to fade, when getting older.
