Michael Urbaniak tackles a jazz violin solo with a fluid, harmonically rich voice rarely found in an instrument grounded in classical roots. Familiar with his previous recordings, I was struck by this collaboration with Cobham and am happy to find this group playing an inspired and very well recorded session. The sound engineer and technicians did a remarkable job.

Floored. I am fortunate enough to be one of the last generations that knew to go back and do my homework, and soak up the great like Mr. Cobham and company.....it's sad that talent like this has been replaced by computers, protools, and dj's claiming to be musicians by sequencing a bunch of blips and blurps.... Thank you for posting this.

Interesting. I live in GV, NYC. I know Mike pretty well, as he lives around the corner. First time I saw an older video of him at this era. I did not recognize him as the slim dude with the Telecaster. He played almost every Wednesday at The 55 Bar on Christopher Street, Greenwich Village. Covid stopped that. Check out him playing with his wife! She can kick ass like he does. A great duo. When he fell over some snow covered construction debris a few years back, he broke both arms, and destroyed his right hand. Took a year or more before he could play again. Now better than ever! Anyway, seriously two different people from back then. Except for the talent part....

I had a band in college. We played a lot of Billy Cobham music. We also played a lot of Weather Report, hence I named the group FORECAST. I left Syracuse in '76, and by the time I returned in '81, the band changed from playing fusion jazz and blues to rock and top 40. I was disappointed, to say the least. Especially because every original member had more talent in their left, little toe, than any of the new musicians. I even requested that the band change their name, out of respect for my old band members. We all were attending Onondaga Community College when we founded the group.

I don't mean to start a debate, but I humbly submit that there were a good number of drummers in the 80s who were as good if not better than Cobham. Rather than listing people I admired more, I'll simply tell a story drummers might be able to appreciate. I got to see a Cobham clinic at a decent sized drumshop in eastern MA; it was billed as him and another drummer I'd never heard of, which sounded cool. I get to the place, and I see a crazy Cobham kit set up with the toms "out of order" - but the other drummer opened first. He walked out to us with a pair of sticks and a practice pad, and if no one did it out loud, it felt like every drummer in the place groaned "oh no!" To everyone's shock, Dom Famularo literally got everyone standing on their feet and cheering him as he played on a rubber practice pad. He was good enough to take the drummer's most boring "instrument" and entertain an entire room with it. Anyhoo, Billy eventually came out and did his thing. I remember being a little disappointed - but he was still great. The clinic ended with Dom on a small 5 piece kit playing with Billy on his double bass Tama monster, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that Dom won. It wasn't a competition; he was simply a better drummer and entertainer. ps. please note: I came here looking for a live Cobham performance, not a live Famularo performance - which speaks for itself :)

Anyone else heard the 'Stratus' album (released in 1981 on the Inakustik label) that they were touring around this time? I've got all his albums on CD from 'Spectrum' (1973) to 'Smokin' (1983) and the studio version of Gil Goldstein's 'Wrapped In A Cloud' is one of the most gorgeous things Billy did during that time. BTW loving the Tim Landers-penned 'All Hallows Eve' - it captures the kitsch spookiness of Oct 31st perfectly. WooOOOoohh!

Yeah! Spotted it a few years before the DVD came out and loved it - 'Wrapped In A Cloud' is one of the loveliest things Billy's ever played on.

Outstanding performance! I’ve got a huge smile on my face listening to this! It is a shame the mix of the drums isn’t great.

Wow! I had no idea Billy C. played his hi-hats with his right hand! I'm a lefty but play a regular kit and no crossing over hands... which makes my right handed drummer friends jealous as hell. Haha!

He doesn't, he plays the same as you. Lucky! That apparently right-handed shot is taken in the mirrors above his head.

Dystopia66 Yeah, Billy plays left hand lead and he's got his crash on the left too, just above the hi-hat. Billy in my opinion is the best ever, his power, speed, versatility and innovate style can't be beat, he's the man!
