Bills Larger Than $100 - High Denomination Note History, Info, and Values

We recently acquired some $500 and $1000 bills and that inspired us to do some more research about all of the different larger denomination notes used in the United States. The video covers background information, history, values, and designs of the $500, $1000, $5000, $10000, and $100000 notes - there's a lot to learn!

That $100,000 dollar note didn't the government confiscate all those notes so I don't understand how that one got sold in auction I thought it was illegal for the general public to even own a bill like that.

When I was a cashier a customer handed me a $2 bill at the checkout and he asked "How much do you think I could get for this on eBay?" I just looked at him and said "Two dollars." Then he goes, "No, I mean how much is it worth?" I gave him a blank expression and informed him "Two dollars," again "your $2 bill is worth $2 dude. That's how paper currency works." I don't miss working in retail.

You are 100,000% incorrect about the $100,000 note. Those notes were never in general circulation and were never authorized for use outside of the FR system. All 42,000 pribted are accounted for. To my knowledge ~15 exist, plus an uncut sheet. Owned Bureau of Engraving, FRS, Smithsonian and the Museum of American Finance (possibly on load to them, and I think they are the ones that have the uncut sheet). If there was one in public hands, it would be a felony

@Clarke Dailey .A sheet of 12 uncut $100,000 notes still exist ,and they are in the hands of the feds ..And the Smithsonian museum in Washington DC has 2 notes on display for educational purposes..

@NES King yes, the uncut sheet is part of the ~ 15 specimens that are still around. Two are in the Smithsonian and at least one at the BOE museum. There was one specimen that toured the country but I think that is one of the specimens from BOE. And the sheet of 12 was at the museum of finance a few years back.

I would like to know the details of that auction. It is my understanding that those notes were only used for transactions between the U S. Treasury, and the Federal Reserve Banks. Unless the law has been recently repealed, it illegal for a private citizen to own one!

Those notes were (and still are) illegal for a private citizen to possess. Those still in existence have all been accounted for! So if you claim to have one in your possession, it is either a forgery, or it has been stolen!

That's what I thought. I thought it was just for the federal reserve accounting or something like that and never actually distributed to the public so technically there shouldn't be any in the "wild". I have no idea why the federal reserve would need a physical bill for accounting purposes. Guess it made more sense in the early days but definitely don't make sense today where everything is done on computers and there's no real need for physical currency except for small private deals. Idk though maybe I'm completely wrong
