Billionaire Family Is Taking On Vince McMahon & WWE

Спорт

After nearly two decades of dominance, WWE might finally have some legitimate competition. Shahid Khan, the billionaire owner of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars football franchise, is backing his 36-year-old son Tony’s new promotion, All Elite Wrestling, or AEW.
The company has already lured world-class talent like Chris Jericho, Kenny Omega, and The Young Bucks ahead of its debut event “Double or Nothing,” scheduled for May 25 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The company also recently signed famed former WWE commentator Jim Ross to be the voice of its broadcasts.
We talked to pro-wrestling insider Conrad Thompson about whether or not AEW poses a threat to WWE’s market share, and how the promotion could finally offer a new option, not only for wrestling fans but for talent seeking to work for a billionaire-backed company other than WWE.
Both WWE and AEW declined to comment for this story.

corporations only provide benefits for employees when labor has the power to force it. Labor doesn’t have that power because wwe is a monopoly. They will be forced to now that they have competition. The irony of a capitalist “free market” is that the freer you make markets vis deregulation and lack of anti trust, all that happens is they gobble eachother up and become monopolies. Private industry OWNS government through lobbying. So when people say government is the problem all they do is leap right over the heads of the people who own government to blame government. The only way wwe is able to have any competition is a foreign billionaire. Crazy isn’t it? We used to have a bunch of different wrestling leagues in the 70s. Hmm interesting how back then there was more regulation and more anti trust law. Funny how competition can only exist when government provides adequate regulation to prevent formation of monopolies. So much for competition being good for its own sake huh? If you’re a conservative who believes in so called “free markets” realize that free markets do not exist and never have. The state has always subsidized corporate America why because private industry owns what government does. If you deregulate and kill government all you do is give huge corporations even more leverage and monopoly power.

I personally didn't like that John Oliver segment. He pretty much just picked on the benefits ICs miss out on by not being full-time employees. But what he leaves out is that all the WWE talent is probably bringing in 6-figures a year, with the main event talent probably in the seven-figures. Would I trade my full-time job with the benefits that come with it for being an IC making seven-figures? Sure would.

John Oliver is correct that WWE needs to classify the talent correctly as employees since they do sign exclusive deals and are heavily controlled, including the scripted promos (most other promotions only provide bullet points on what needs to be conveyed, and the talent comes up with the promos based on the bullet points).
