Tom Scott was a very popular jazz/rock sax player on the LA studio scene. One of his records also provided the basis for Pete Rock & CL Smooth's "T.R.O.Y". One of the incredible things about this record was the amount of top shelf jazz-funk musicians who Q recruited to play, from Louis Johnson, to drummer Ndugu Chanceler, to Tom Scott, to members of Toto and The Crusaders.
Please don’t delete this video, it’s very informative and helpful. I need this in the future.🙏💯 good video
Quincy jones and Michael Jackson were amazing together!
What a hard work Mattie! Just one word: Congratulations!🎉

Thanks Ergim!!
This was an excellent video, clear and precise. Love that you added in some theory.
Went to a fundraiser 2 years ago..as soon as Billie Jean started the dance floor was crowded! I looked up and said to myself, "Look at this..MJ' your music is still Killin it..."
Louis Johnson plays bass guitar on this. I thought it was common knowledge.
I liked how deep you explain things

Loved this. Great job. I have never studied music but Michael has been my idol since I was a kid. If you ever watched him explain the origins of Billie Jean he was able to beatbox all the main elements and sing it at the same time. I am saying this because I believe that the snapping part while recording seems to me, "knowing" Michael, more of a "Michael thing" rather than helpful to him in keeping rhythm. I'm not sure how to explain this properly, but I feel like when he used to sing he did it so naturally, like you can tell it came as his whole being's nature, like breathing, so since he came up with the melody and most of the production the finger snapping was just part of his natural singing, an extention of his singing and breathing, rather than being helpful to him. Michael Jackson was probably the last person on earth that ever needed help keeping/understanding and remembering rhythm.
I just want to say, dude you are amazing!!! I've been getting back into music production lately and I just had the random urge to listen to Billie Jean again (on my new Sony headphones!). As soon as the song started, I heard so much more texture and instruments than ever before and it really made me want to understand how this song was done. I looked online and at other videos for a breakdown, but yours was the clearest and exactly what I was looking for. I might've missed it, but do you have a background in production/theory? I'd really like to become somewhat as knowledgeable as you are! Again, amazing video!!

Hey thanks! I'm a music producer and a musician as well which helps me understand some of the other things going on! Just stick with it and I'm sure you'll be able deconstruct some of your own songs!
MJ, the one and only. A true musical genius. We miss you MJ.

💯😎
I think the one "Bass Boot" track is a real bass because I heard in the beginning, the rhodes was tuning the bass so I would assume it's real. It's definitely distorted.
Lmao I knew Billie Jean had a lot of elements in it but… I didn’t know it had this much musical elements and different things in it 😂

Same, Not to mention the Mix but Instrumentally Because for me it sounds so clean and sounds simple but yet amazingly awesome.
the synth bass reminds me of the HIStory billie jean bass.
Great song analysis. Where can I get the stems?
1st let me say I like the video here. I can tell you that the deep bass is a real bass and it was played by Louis Johnson of the Brothers Johnson.

Exactly, Louis said Q and Bruce asked him to bring in every bass guitar he had to see which had the most unique tone, instead of playing his famous Music Man, he played a Japanese bass for this track.

@@msoileau83 Yeah, he’s on the Yamaha instead of his usual Ernie Ball, and it’s one of those (like “Keep Forgetting”) where he’s plucking instead of thumping.
So cool but does anyone knows what mix app he’s using cuzz the 1 I got only fits 16 track and Billie Jean got 39 help me plz
OMG! How do you get the individual tracks to a song? Plz reply :)
KABASA!
14:47 Mj has his trademark vocal ad-lib there so that space is already occupied.
This was originally compose by mj. it 99% same as released🖤
I would love to mess around with this track. Could you send me the stems? I've been trying to find them but haven't had any luck.
Download link please
MJ..snaps..but you can hear him stomp!! .it's a isolated moment.
Could I get the stems please 😊
This is fairly typical of the sheer amount of production and mixing that Michael would have put into his songs. MJ was of the mindset, if I want to be successful, I have to make sure the fans/listeners get their monies worth and this was especially evident when it came to the sheer amount of production into his live shows. I suspect that many of Michael's recordings would have had at least 30 to 60 individual mix tracks, including recording his own multiple layered vocal harmonies, beat boxing, etc.
Anyone can send me these files please
Definitely a real bass (Ouis Johnson). Definitely real strings. Jerry Lubbock is the string conductor on Billie Jean and Jerry Hey arranged them. This sounds nothing like a Mellotron (which couldn't play that most of that stuff anyway as it's not a synthesizer). And the Lyricon is the first wind synth instrument. The ancestor of EWI and the likes.
Why only Bille Jean . Check out other MJ songs
Comment for the Algorithm
My only critique is as a musician I thought you would have done research on the actual real musicians that played on this track because the information is out there. If musicians can’t give musicians credit who can.
which music software do you use?

Sure man! What do you need help with? Finding files? Importing files?
In another youtubers breakdown of this song in the strings section he says that Violin and Cello is there and for the Bass there is a normal Bass and Synth Bass Along... And I think everybody must be aware of how many times even Bruce and Quincy have mixed this song.
