This was so beautiful and I loved how Billie Eilish changed certain parts of the song. What Was I Made For is so beautifully written and I enjoyed hearing FINNEAS' vocals there as well - so deserving of the win!

If you watch the Oscars video of the song you get to see Billie's shocked reaction to the standing ovation that she got from the teary-eyed crowd, and Finneas giving her a huge hug right after.

What a beautiful performance! I've seen the Grammy's version of her performance but not the Oscars. I think the Oscars is a whole other level of greatness. I love the orchestra and how they came in in the middle of the song. Great reaction, Jennifer!

Stunning.❤ I love this live version and the changes from the recorded version. I can’t imagine writing a song that wins so many major awards. I also can’t imagine performing that song like this, with this audience on this stage accompanied by a huge string section. I don’t care how many times you’ve performed, that has to bring on a range of emotions. Yet I would bet having her brother right beside her on the piano means more to her than everything else. You can see it at the end. ❤ Beautiful on so many levels. Great job and thanks for your insights. 😊

Jennifer! Well we've heard this song a bit lately haven't we? 😁 Wow, such a pretty performance! And you're right, there at the end where she drops the breathy quality for some really beautiful pure tones! And the way her face just lights up in a smile there at the end. I get why you might have teared up a bit there at the end. Tissues Jen! Tissues! 😂 You just never know when the moment will arise! Awesome reaction and analysis as always. 😊

TY, Jennifer, for confirming my thoughts that the second verse was missing. I listened several times and thought I was imagining it. Too bad, because “something you paid for” is such a powerful and haunting line. Love your channel!💕

When they performed No Time to Die for the Oscars in 2022, they also shortened that song. I think they were requested to do that.@@cattinkerbell4946

Finneas is normally well off the mic. He has mastered the art of supporting her with just the right amount of volume. So the harmony is there but not front and center. They did drop a few lines in the beginning. The academy wants them to shorten up for the broadcast.

I love that she came out of the breathiness for a few lines. I think it makes it more dynamic. I love the breathy quality of her voice, but I prefer this to the original.

Yeah, she seems to be doing this on live performances. She did the same thing at the Grammys. Interestingly, she did it on different lines. I wonder if it's just a spur of the moment thing. I imagine it really helps with not exhausting herself. It takes an insane amount of breath support to sing in that aspirate way for a full song. In the studio, you can record one little section at a time. That's often what she does, in fact. But live, it must be a relief to switch into a fuller voice. Plus, it adds to the energy of the performance.

I love Billie & I haven't heard the original but to me, this performance while beautiful, was very stagnant. Almost the entire performance was sang in a whisper. I kept waiting for the moment or moments when her voice would take flight but it never happened. Am I the only person who thought this?

@@Reynate65Ok so you disagree & i appreciate your opinion. I'm not sure you can answer for everyone though. Lol. I wish someone who really knows music would explain why singing an entire song basically the same way the whole way through works in this particular instance & why they love it. Every other reaction to pretty much any or all other music, by voice teachers or musically trained people that I have watched they all talk a lot about dynamics & changes in rhythm or tone or both are needed to keep the listeners interested. I would just love to hear a professional opinion on this. But like i said, I love Billie & I also love the whisper quality of her voice in this song. I personally just wish the dynamics changed a bit more.

Thank you, I enjoyed your reaction, as always ... That said, it's such a shame to me that most reactions to Billie's vocals always seem to devolve into a discussion about how much breath she is using at any particular time and whether or not she can do anything else. Her vocal agility is astounding. This was a deliberately airy song as she explained in a VF interview, where she sings it in other styles to make her point. Check out her live cover of Peggy Lee's Fever, or her duet of My Hero with Dave Grohl (HE knows), or her incredible take on Sally's Song rom the Nightmare Before Christmas if you need proof that she can open and close those folds whenever she wants. Cheers!

Chris Liepe has been reacting to a ton of her videos. He loves her. But I haven't seen a lot of other vocal coaches do reactions. It's a shame because she's insanely versatile. She'll often do half a dozen different singing styles in one song.
