yep. when you think of 2012 you immediately think of gangnam style, call me maybe, and somebody that i used to know, the same thing can't be said with maroon 5 songs... they're just there. oh i know that song and that's about it...

The Club boom reaches the zenith of its relevance…which is ironic considering this is the year where you can trace every other big trend that would occur for the rest of the decade. On the hip hop front, outside of the pop-rap from the likes of Flo Rida and Pitbull, other artists are shifting away from party lyrics and upbeat feelings with a more grounded and minimalist style, including one particular style known as Trap. Country music continues to grow in dominance, with several country pop crossover successes like Carry Underwood and most notably Taylor Swift. This is also the beginning of what would be known as Bro Country. Pop music itself is also realigning in the wake of the changing trends and new artists changing the formula from generic EDM and party music to something a bit slower. And most famously, a mix of several eclectic styles would all suddenly emerge in the wake of the Club Boom and come crashing down in the pop world. I’m gonna use the umbrella term “indie” here, but a mix of electric rock, pop rock, indie pop, and even a bit of folk music all suddenly see huge chart success and would shape whatever remnants of mainstream “rock” music would be for this decade. People consider this to be one of the best years of pop music in the 2010s, and I’m inclined to agree. This is an incredibly influential year in pop music that I think marks a significant turning point in music production and styles in several key genres. Musically, artistically, production, and even consumption in music would all see several changes throughout this year, especially as streaming and video sites such as KZread and Spotify would both begin to shape chart data and the shifts in trends. For early 2010s music as well as the club boom period, this is without a doubt the best of it all and in retrospect even the trends I disliked from this year I still appreciate quite a bit. This is probably up there with the likes of 1982 or 1992 as one of the most important years of pop music…weird they always end with 2. Also Gangnam style deserved better. Best and worst #1s of the year: Worst is One More Night by Maroon 5 (Gangnam Style…) 5. Somebody That I Used To Know (Gotye ft. Kimbra) 4. We Are Never Getting Back Together (Taylor Swift) 3. I’m Sexy And I Know It (LMFAO) 2. We Are Young (fun. ft. Janelle Monae) 1. Call Me Maybe (Carly Rae Jepsen)

Were they robbed? A look at the number 2 hits of 2012 and the songs that blocked them. Boyfriend - Mark my words, We Are Young by Fun. will be used in many future high school movies set in the 2010s. I didn’t appreciate it then but I do now. I’ve always hated Beiber as an artist so he was def not robbed here. Payphone - I really like this song a lot. I like Somebody I Used to Know a lot more. Not robbed. Wide Awake - Pains me to say since it’s one of my fav Katy Perry songs but it lost out to Call Me Maybe. Not robbed. Lights - Lost out to Call Me Maybe when the hype was starting to lose momentum. I won’t say it was robbed there but Lights definitely has a legacy compared to Whistle, which is a guilty pleasure of mine, it has a legacy as one of the worst number ones in the 2010s. Robbed there. Gangnam Style - Never got the hype and I never will. One More Night is more deserving so not robbed.
