Bill Walton, basketball legend and San Diego resident, rails on how city has handled homelessness

Former NBA star Bill Walton took part in a news conference Tuesday morning with the Lucky Duck Foundation to address the issue of homelessness in San Diego.
Though the event was to call attention to a new Lucky Duck Foundation initiative, which will routinely grade the county's 18 regional leaders on the job they're doing when it comes to addressing homelessness, Walton took aim at Mayor Todd Gloria once again.

I mean republican states are by in large useless to America with the exception of Texas. Where Democrat states can be progressive to a point of failure, republican states refuse to change to the point where they all but die. Texas is probably the greatest Republican state and they don't even have a reliable power grid in times of crisis. Civilians couldn't get power and the ones that did got charged a 💩ton for running heat instead of freezing. America across the board has a stagnant government problem and its the citizens fault. Everyone has willingly opted into republican vs Democrat bs and depending on what side you pick, you blame literally everything on the other side and ignore your own parties faults. If Americans stopped fanboying parties and instead voted for people who actually got things done regardless of party alliegence, then the country might actually improve. Won't happen though Edit: last thing. America is a country that's built on invidualism (selfishness). There should always be a healthy amount of individualism to avoid people getting abused on an individual level. But Americans all seem to believe "my way or the highway" there is no compromise and most of them don't seem like they want to sacrifice anything for the betterment of the country. If life has to be worse in some areas for it to be better overall it ain't worth it to most Americans.

Ronald Reagan did this and all the rest of the republicans who followed. Their decisions to choke government and tax breaks for the rich robbed the very institutions and funding that helped the mentally ill. Their refusal to raise the minimum wage while the price of everything ESPECIALLY housing is why this has happening. Mr . Walton is speaking from a super privileged point of view. How many people had their reputations ruined by being labeled names because they saw this on the horizon or their particular portions of paradise had already been lost. It doesn’t take much of a imagination to imagine how many areas had to destroy before Bill’s area of town was affected. My city of Philadelphia is in terrible shape. I can only rout for Mr Walton to stay true to himself and do what he feels is right. I just hope he’s prepared to find himself on the other end and see what that’s like.

The mayor's job is to address the problem, not blame the past, but to do something. There are many ways to address homelessness. Here in San Diego the problem is getting exponentially worse every month. This homeless crisis has escalated from street begging to a crime wave of petty theft in the last year. The next step will likely be violent crimes. The desperation is palpable, obvious, and real.

About 20 homeless ex-construction workers(jobless), hair stylist(shopless), an arborist who writes a column in a Silicon Valley shopper magazine(full-time jobless), a couple veterans, a prostitute, and various other local alchoholics, lived under four county bridges. I fed them homemade soup once per week for three years..... the least I could afford to do. So--- I got a good feeling about the "haves" attitudes and the "have-nots". At age 70 I am slipping into poverty, myself. I know how poorly my community thinks of me now. I don't drink, drugs, swear, fart, or smell. My kindness was labeled as "aiding and abutting those people". Those undesirables. Not even a single chicken was donated for the soup in three years(2013 -2016).

It is not easy to solve this problem. The costs of living in San Diego has increased so much. Land is so expensive. No one wants a homeless shelter next to them or even in their neighborhood. The weather in San Diego allows homeless to live year round. The homeless taking over parks, beaches, etc. is not ok. Our Governor had a surplus of $97 billion. Spending money and buying property and building studios, and 1/2 bedroom units for the homeless would help. They would have to built withing 1 or 2 blocks of mass transit stations. Rules would have to be followed and enforced. I have heard of people who were given housing but left because the others around him were too rude and noisey. I lived in San Diego and was born there. I was living there in Pacific Beach for 20 years before moving away last year. It was bad then, and obviously worse now. I didn't vote for Todd Gloria for Mayor. I didn't like what his work while in State Government.

Todd Gloria didn’t cause this problem. Nobody complained when we had those do nothing republican mayors, or Governors. This didn’t happen overnight. Blame Ronald Reagan! That’s where it started. He shut down all the mental hospitals and funding for mental health clinics. He strangled assistance for the poor. People need to read history.

It’s not a homeless problem! It’s a drug addiction and mental illness problem. Do you really think the people smoking fentanyl in the parks are 737 pilots who just can’t find an affordable apartment? Most of them aren’t even from your area. They come or the Blue cutie in the west coast because of insane progressive enablement policies and George Soros funded DA’s who won’t prosecute crimes. Please, see this issue for what it is!

Good speech by Bill. The homeless situation in San Diego is out of control. It gets progressively worse without much visible improvement. The homeless deserve help, but not choice or tolerance. We the public need to do what we can help. The government needs to provide transitional housing. The homeless have to accept help and comply with the law.

Bill, I grew up in rural Southern Illinois, and I moved to Thousand Oaks in 1990 because I was returning to Pepperdine (originally lived on campus for a brief period in 1985-86). I am now retired after teaching law, business ethics, and finance for over 30 years. I also served as a minister and would often speak at churches from Santa Barbara to San Diego. While it was a long drive from Pepperdine or my Moorpark or Thousand Oaks home, I loved driving to San Diego. When any of my Illinois family asked me, I would always say, “San Diego is my favorite city in the world. I never was attracted to L.A. (just way too large for a guy who grew up in town of 750 people in rural Southern Illinois). To think that lawlessness and the forgotten Constitutional rights to have public decency and public safety preserved. I grew up poorer than anyone who is on public welfare (something most farm families refused, because they took pride in hard work and dedication to decency), but my family took great pride in the little grocery store my parents (just 2 of them; no employees) ran from 7 A.M. to 10 PM 365 days a year! POVERTY IS NO EXCUSE FOR LAWLESSNESS AND IRRESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOR! You are absolutely correct! I taught leadership, something public servants have lost in their attempt to keep the pathetic bleeding hearts (deluded by their own spoiled hearts), who elect and empower such people as the mayors of Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Santa Monica, and San Diego, who fail to protect the public. We are fortunate that we have not yet had major pandemics produced by the rats and the lack of sanitation in L.A. , Santa Barbara, San Francisco, and, yes, San Diego! PEACH ON, for you are speaking for yourself and all rational voters who simply want a return to law and decency! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! May many more speak out! L. Keith Whitney, Professor Emeritus of Business Ethics and Law, Seaver College, Pepperdine.

Thank You Bill Walton for speaking up. I have seen you many times over the years cycling through town. You're a True San Diegan through and through. Your anger is justified, I feel the same way. It's truly heart breaking. Balboa Park is a great example of how out of control it is, it is simply not a safe situation at all. It's actually scary. It has gotten so bad, my parents and brother have already moved. I think it was the second or third time they saw someone walk right in front of their house and defecate on the street when my folks decided to leave. San Diego is no longer Americas Finest City. I hope something changes and that it can regain that title but people are going to have to vote for different leadership or the leadership is going to have to have a change of heart. I really wish Todd Gloria would have embraced Bill Waltons attempt to work together as an ally but it seems as if he has not. The ball is really in Todd's court. What are you going to do Mayor? Please act now, or move out of the way.

The harder you work, the more the government will take, and the less you work, the more they want to give.? Hopefully, your speech will make a difference. The same can be said for our disfuncional city council. during the six years he's been in office, Portland has devolved into a crime ridden, dirty, unsafe city
