Bill Frisell interviewed by Pablo Held
Bill Frisell was on the top my list right from the start of this interview series. Through the help of Mike Gibbs, I finally got in touch with Bill and we had a lovely conversation. What is there to say about Bill Frisell’s music that hasn’t been said yet? I mean, I don’t know anyone who knows about his music and doesn’t like it - everybody loves Bill Frisell! Maybe it’s because he’s so eclectic, so there’s something in there for everybody? Or because of his unique approach to the guitar? Or maybe because he enriches every musical setting? Because of his great tunes? His many different bands? The classic recordings he contributed to as a sideman? I really don’t know… there are so many things to love about him, his playing and his music. OK maybe I should stop rambling… You have a 2 hour conversation ahead of you, and you’re in for a ride. Enjoy!

It has always struck me how Bill speaks the way he plays, often (as he says about Jim Hall's playing) "...implying something big with something small." The way he will begin a phrase and then leave it hang in the air...and then beginning again, in a related direction, and following that...maybe leaving that hanging, maybe not. This way of listening to him, listening...creates or invites the opportunity to be present. "You know deep down inside what you really like. Don't be afraid to show it to someone else...If you are playing what you really love--that feeling transmits to people more than...anything." Beautiful.
I remember seeing him at Village Vanguard in 95, expecting lyrical "Frisellisms"..I think it was with Joey Baron and Kermit Driscoll (?) and he was blowing standards like crazy, really shredding through the evening...it was mindblowing
Bill Frisell is a national treasure and one of the nicest and most humble people that signed my guitar.
quite possibly one of the best interviews i've ever had the pleasure of listening to - like two people just talking about something they love. nobody ever gets cut off, and Bill has the freedom in his own funny way to go down any road he pleases, with Pablo gently guiding him to various interesting topics. Masterpiece.
Forget Clapton - BF IS God!
"My hope is thst every moment in the music is gonna be st the edge of what we dont know" BF
That’s really cool hearing him say he’s playing guitar so much lately and he was reminded of how it felt to be younger and in love with playing for the sake of learning and the pure love of music. That’s EXACTLY what I’ve been doing and feeling lately .... and it’s really cool to hear one of my heroes say that!!! Love this guy!!!
"Oh, there's so many things in there that I hadn't even seen before." that's the pure soul of a real musician, learning all life, getting closer and closer to the core.
Bill is such an American treasure. Seeing this lifts my spirits at this low point of national shame and embarrassment for the USA. Thanks Pablo.
