That's my 1918 vintage 9' Steinway "D" Bill is playing. I rebuilt the instrument, prepared, tuned and voiced the piano for that performance at Lulu White's that night. I owned a piano rebuilding shop next door (David McCord Pianos) on Appleton Street, Boston, and lived on the 3rd floor above Lulu Whites. Bill, Joe and Marc came for dinner at my place, and along with my cohorts in the piano shop, we all feasted on Canard ala Orange that my french girlfriend and business partner Veronique cooked. One of the most memorable evenings of my lifetime!

Wow, David McCord; thanks for sharing. I hear that Dave McKenna was playing opposite Bill Evans during this engagement? Sure wish I had been living in Boston during the time Lulu Whites was around. Also, I heard that Lulu White's had a previous address (before Appleton Street)?

This has been an incredible listening experience for this 80 year-old pianist-composer! I’ve been enthralled with Bill’s music for over 60 years! I had a 3-hour one-on-one visit with Bill in L.A.-and other shorter visits with him. This set of recordings made less than a year before he died are transcendental! The sound is remarkable and the playing of all members is killin’! It’s almost as if Bill had an intuitive feeling that he didn’t have much time left! He left everything out there on the stage! I LOVED this Trio! Marc is such a monster! Joe was so sensitive! The whole thing was astonishing!

I never thought the TV show was any good either. Bunch of typical 70’s flippant, saucy and stupid scripting making fun of body bags. I don’t like the tune much either. I met Bill in 1979 in Chicago and we went over some guitar arrangements that I had made of his tune Waltz for Debby and Turn out the Stars. He was a very nice guy! If he hadn’t hooked into the Miles drug culture he would have lived much longer and given the world even more music. He was the greatest improvisational musician of the 20th Century.

I should add that the night the famous Sunday at the Village Vanguard music was recorded I was six feet from the piano through two sets and remember Evans telling the audience to shut up that they were recording. Now that was a very noisy gang talking and klinking glasses most of the night. Bill was still at his greatest.

Every time Bill Evans plays its a concert, unless he is practicing. Those practice tape recordings released by his son Evan are just that... practice tapes. But if he’s playing in public, the audience is listening to the greatest improvisational musician of the 20th Century and should have shut up. But that’s the general public for you.

Keith Shadwick and Peter Pettinger's excellent biographies have this performance in Oct 1979, following the Buenos Aires concerts in Sept, and just prior to his alma mater visit in Louisiana. (it was Oct 30th)
