I wonder just when Evans went nuclear and started playing like this - I bet it surprised the rhythm guys (unless they all discussed it somewhere beforehand). I'll have to look again in the Pettinger book, mentioned below by madrobotfan, to see if it - really, a transformation - was noted. Of course with Evans, even with the upped intensity, his sense of humor remains, hidden in plain sight between the staves and the fistfuls of flat 9ths and hot licks. By the way Konitz sounds awful.

Holy shit! A Bill Evans album I haven't heard! With Philly Joe! Philly always brought a lot of energy out of Evans. It's a shame they didn't record more together. Plus there's a lot of heavy hitters on this. Thank you for posting this.

Philly Joe Jones on Peacocks is pure genius. He was reading Bill's mind. For being one of the most swinging musicians who ever lived, he was also a master colourist. Love Philly man. Now to listen to the rest of this!

Got drunk with Philly Joe one night. Charming, funny, great stories, and we were listening to Teddy Wilson at some hotel club in LA. He would pepper the songs with back stories that really opened this young guy's eyes ( I was 28). One of the great jazz experiences ever. What a generous guy. It helped that we were sitting in the best seats in the house and I was paying for all the drinks. Happily, I might add. HIs drum solo on Nardis absolutely kills. I feel a little odd commenting when someone as famous and highyly respected as Mr. Blake precedes me, but I was too excited to stay quiet.

That's funny, I felt like he kept missing cues on Nardis. Maybe he wasn't warmed up yet.

Sounds like Philly was not in the same world as Bill on the first pieces. Not a match made in heaven to my ears and I love Philly’s playing.

Just finished reading "How My Heart Sings" - highly recommended and many of the major events or records are either represented by audio and very often video on youtube, and spotify, especially some later international dates and fests. It was the perfect way to read it, going to the video tape. I also just watched the doc on him this weekend, "Time Remembered" which was tremendous. His playing was magnificent right up to the very end, his playing on Keystone Corner set, recorded less than two weeks before his death, outta this world and beautiful. Been listening to that. Anyway, thanks for this upload!
