Bill Carter : Sarajevo satellite link-ups - U2 Bono fools rush in 1993 zooropa zoo tv

Bill Carter - a writer and film director - is the author of a documentary film called Miss Sarajevo that tells the hard reality of the Sarajevans from amateur video material he shot during his stay in the besieged city, back in 1993. He also managed to catch the irish rock band U2's attention on the troubles they were living through. During that summer 1993, U2 were touring in Europe with a huge show that would get the audience to question every night on the changes that were occuring precisely in Europe at the start of the 90s. Failing to bring the band and play in Sarajevo, Bill Carter and U2 decide to set up live satellite link-ups every night the band would play to make the audience aware of what was going on there, only a few hundreds kilometres away from the city they were playing in.
In this video, Bill Carter explains how he came up with the idea of connecting Sarajevo back to the western world thanks to these link-ups. Then, you'll see one of these, recorded in Bologna on july, 18th 1993 at Stadio Comunale on the Zooropa'93 Tour. At last, Bill Carter goes back over the impact it had on people's opinion in Europe.

The ZooTv tour was U2's irony time, everything was back to front - serious was not serious, a smirk meant "I wasn't really smirking - you were supposed to be able to tell that", and so on. They performed with two members of Abba at one show, performing 'Dancing Queen', you were meant to see it all as ironic and cheesy, Bono said later though that "it turned into a kind of homage however". How the hell is the audience supposed to tell what the band's intent was? Audience member: "oh look, Bono is having a laugh at throwaway trash pop songs - actually, no he's not, I can read his thoughts, he's actually now paying a HOMAGE to the two members of Abba! I can tell! Bono's thinking just changed, my understanding of what he was doing changed too!" How ridiculous, the audience didn't know what was going on. It's like with this satellite link up, the show got serious at this point, earlier Bono was "the fly" - in the goggles and leather gear, later he's Macphisto in the gold lame suit. The audience got lost at U2's attempt to sometimes be ironic, sometimes not, and Bono sometimes just acting like a fool. The book 'U2 At The End Of The World' by American writer Bill Flanagan is about this tour, he accompanied the band on the road. I have the book here. On page 80, Bono says as part of an interview with the writer: "Right in the middle of a contradiction - that's the place to be". No one, I doubt even Bono, knows what that means - but the audience still applauded him on this tour no matter what he was doing.
