Biking in Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Hello BBB Adventurers!
We've been traveling south in January and February for a few years to get out of the brutal Idaho winter and enjoy some warmer weather. This episode is the twelfth and last in a series that covers our 2024 Escape the Snow adventures and covers our continuing journey to through Arizona, New Mexico and Texas eventually finding ourselves in Louisiana and then Florida. In this episode we make our way from Waco to Amarillo where I ride my Apollo bike in the Palo Duro Canyon State Park and then we make our way back to Idaho Falls.
Thanks for watching.
Enjoy the Ride

Hey Deb, Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. We really enjoyed Palo Duro and were surprised how it pretty much appears out of nowhere when you drive to it. If I lived in the area, I'd be cycling that route frequently. Great hill climb training. Enjoy the Ride

My first church was in Liberal, KS and at the same time my sister and her husband lived in Lubbock, TX (he worked for Texas Instruments). We used to meet at Palo Duro for picnics (it was about halfway between). As your video showed, it's a beautiful area. I remember that at each creek crossing, there were water depth poles, and you could see the water marks that were way above the roof of our car. I'm sure it was good to be home (but not the snow). 🙂

Hi Craig, Thanks for watching and nice to hear from you. Amazing you are familiar with and have spent some time in Palo Duro Canyon and yes..very beautiful. I also noted the water level gauges and discussed the flash flooding that can happen in that part of Texas. Hope all is well in Florida. Enjoy the Ride

RYNO!!!!!!! Palo Duro Canyon was really stellar. So happy my Uncle told me about it and guided us to it during our visit. Escape for the Snow was a HUGE success in a large part thanks you to and Beth!! So grateful for the time we got to spend together. And yes....I was not happy to return to a bunch of snow. Luckily it didn't last long and now we are ramping into much better weather here in Idaho. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride

I am originally from Montgomery, Alabama, but I’ve lived in both Amarillo (Potter County, 1995) and in Lubbock (1997-98). The land is actually flat on the Texas Panhandle. I went to the Pal Duro Canyon one time, and it reminded me of the Grand Canyon, only a much smaller scale. I’d say it was 20+ miles south of Amarillo off I-27. Good people in the Texas Panhandle.

Howdy Scott, Thanks for watching and for the comment about your time in the Texas Panhandle. Our experience visiting that part of Texas confirms your statement of the good people there. I was shocked at the beauty of the Palo Duro canyon and it seemed to come out of nowhere in the flat lands. Really enjoyed it. Thanks again for watching. Enjoy the Ride

Hi Vic, Thank you! It was pretty tough...tougher than it should have been given I was pretty out of shape. I've been riding more and I'm making progress. It would be a bit easier if I did it today but I still have a ways to go before I'm ready for the Triple Bypass in July. Thanks for watching, we always appreciate your support. Enjoy the Ride

Wow! I live 100miles south of Palo Duro and have never been. I have gone to the smaller State Park to the east of there, Caprock Canyons. Also beautiful and has the Texas Bison herd. Both parks are very rich in history especially the Comanche. Charles Goodnight and his wife started the Bison preservation herd at Palo Duro or that area in the late 1800s I think. Goodnight made a deal with some Comanche so they would have a place to stay while avoiding US forces. They got homesick though and went back to Oklahoma or so the story goes. Anyway, hope ya’ll had a good time in Texas! Take care!

Hey Bryan, Given how close you are, I recommend to plan a trip to Palo Duro Canyon. It's worth it. You are spot on about the interesting history of this part of Texas. I've always enjoyed spending time in Texas and this trip was no exception. Looking forward to our next visit. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Enjoy the Ride

Good morning, Disco, and everyone. Practicing them hills is the chatter for this years, Ragbrai. Just about everyone is out of shape at 10% grade. After about 100 feet, I would be yearning for the days when I was 20 again. Thanks for taking us on the ride. I cranked up the trainers resistance as you rode the hill. I think I got the shorter version of your hill. Thank you for staying up to edit a video and picking up the Disco poops. Don't like winter just because your kneeling next to a sewer drop heating pipes with a hair dryer. That is being a bit hard on winter. The triple bypass sounds evil. SNOW.... daw, how cute. Hope your pipes didn't crack from the cold temps. Poor Birdie. Be well and about time for a red dragon sighting.

Hey Dave, Good morning to you! Yes...this year's RAGBRAI probably warrants some additional hill training. If I'm honest with myself, I'm not in the kind of physical condition I'd like to be or that I've been for the last number of years. While it's not a valid excuse, I have been pretty busy for the last year dealing with my Dad's declining health and now is estate. It's not a valid excuse because everyone has challenges in their life....but...I'm committed to get ready for both the Triple ByPass and RAGBRAI. I guess I am a little hard on winter...but I just don't really like it, but that's why we Escape the Snow. The pipes thawed out during the day without issue. :) You're right about the Red Dragon...stay tuned. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride

Hey Matt! Great to hear from you! Yes, the last bit of that ride was on essentially single track. I wanted to see the Lighthouse Rock. The Apollo did pretty well on that section but if I did a lot of that kind of riding, I'd have to get a 600X. It was a beautiful ride in a beautiful canyon. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride

Hey Ian, Well.....you do bring up a good point. It's possible there is a correlation between my beer consumptions and the freezing temperature of our black water tank. :) Not sure how to get the same effect with the grey water tank.....at least not that Mb would agree to.
