Wow. Wonder if I was the only one who thought one of the two of you had been under "the knife". I wouldn't wish that for anyone of course. At age 73, I feel good about thirty or forty miles here in SW Indiana. The Triple ByPass is not one I will be doing, but I'm impressed. Go for it Brently..

Hey Richard, It is a confusing name for a bike ride, particularly with the crowd my age. :) 30 or 40 miles is a good ride, keep it up. You must keep riding and keep moving, it's the only way to combat time as it marches on. Thanks for the encouragement. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride

Howdy, Thanks! Music selection is both fun and difficult and often takes me a while to find a song I think is suited for the footage, so I appreciate the feedback. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride

Hey Matt, You point out one of the interesting advantages of attempting this event in Colorado, training for it should put me in a position to enjoy this year's hilly RAGBRAI more. And....yeah...sure...Iowa's flat, as a waffle. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride

For BRAG (Bike Ride Across Georgia) this past week I started out using Propel packets for hydration but started to cramp near the end of the first day so I switched to LMNT (possibly what you got from The Feed), it’s very salty tasting if you try it casually but on an actual ride it doesn’t seem too salty and really seems to work, no cramping the rest of the week. Not sure your gearing but you could consider some changes to make the climbing easier. I normally run a 52/36 chainrings with an 11x 34 rear cassette. For RAGBRAI I plan to swap back to the original 50/34 chainrings. No I sure what your rear cassette is but you might want to consider the 11x34 rear cassette if you derailleur cage is long enough (my Specialized Roubaix came with the Shimano GRX so it has a longer cage that accommodates the 34T granny gear).

Hey Steve, It's interesting you mention LMNT because that is they hydration packets I've been trying. I like the citrus flavored the best. The lime one makes me think I'm drinking a margarita because of the salty flavor. :) In terms of gearing. I was running 52/36 chainrings with a 11x28 cassette. That's what came on the bike and what I've been riding for the 10 years I've owned it. After a lot of thought and some suggestions like yours, I installed a 32x11 cassette (and new rear derailleur and chain) and have been out on it a few times. I think I'm really going to like the lower gears for the Triple Bypass. So, thanks for the recommendation. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride

This is a bucket list item go ride and enjoy your trip. If you finish or not you gave it the American best shot. You will have enough time to recover for Ragbrai. I fear hills with my bikes gearing but it won't stop me giving it the ol' left, right, left, right. Mb and Disco will are ready for Ragbrai and some less serious pork chops, pie, ice cream and beer. Be well.

Hey Dave, Thanks for the comment. No matter the outcome, I will enjoy the process of training for the Triple Bypass and giving it my best. My biggest concern is an injury so I'm doing all I can to listen to my body and not push past a certain point, although I will have to mentally push myself if I have any hope of completing it. Looking forward to RAGBRAI since for me, it will be relatively easy compared to Colorado. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride

@BBB_Adventures not sure if you thought of this but going to a shorter crank helps the knees as well. Not sure why they make every bike 175's.

  • @BBB_Adventures

Hey Dave, Funny you should mention that. When I had a professional bike fit done on the Giant when we lived in Taiwan, we put a shorter crank on it. It made a notable difference in both my knees and my performance on the bike. I haven't done that to any of the other bikes and I do notice the difference.

I ran a full marathon once (and only once). The long training runs were as much psychological as they were physical. Keep up the good work! I see you aren't riding the Apollo, but a Giant (TCR?) I ride a Giant OCR1, aluminum frame and carbon fork. A few years ago, I replaced the rear cassette from a 28-11 to a 30-12. It's amazing the difference between the 28 and the 30 on hills. Good luck! I'll be sure to chip into the beer fund. 🙂

Hey Craig, Thanks for the validation that completing this event is going to be as much a mental feat as a physical one. No, not riding the Apollo, a touring bike isn't a good choice for the Triple Bypass...at least not for me. You are correct, my road bike is a 2013 Giant TCR Advance. Mb has a matching bike. We bought them when we first moved to Taiwan and rode them the 6 years we lived in Taipei. Funny you should mention the rear cassette because just last Thursday, I replace my 28t rear cassette with a 32t. I've only had it out once since (crappy weather) but I think I'm really going to like the lower gears on the Triple Bypass. Thanks for your willingness to donate to the beer fund. We'll be communicating how that will work very soon. Thanks for watching. Enjoy the Ride

Dave, Unfortunately, it's not cheap. I had to buy the new cassette plus a new (longer) chain and a new rear derailleur since the idler gears had be be further apart to handle the longer chain. My bike has Shimano Ultegra components which added to the part cost. I was running out of time so I had the bike shop do the work. You could do it much cheaper if you used 105 components and did the work yourself.

  • @BBB_Adventures

Yeah....certainly a confusing name for a bike ride. I think my biggest risk between now and RAGBRAI is injuring myself training for the Triple Bypass or during the event. But I'm pretty confident I won't push myself to the point of injury. Thanks for the concern and for watching. Enjoy the Ride
