When the gov say they want to keep people safe it’s about money
Batteries weren’t certified until like yesterday, and potted batteries are in what, four brands? I didn’t think this legislation was retroactive.
Barcelona Spain here. They have prohibited all electric scooters and monocycle (¿?) on public transportation because of a few idiots who were manipulating their vehicles or buying cheap batteries. Like always, the many pay for the few.

Nistos Hautes-Pyrénées France here, they didn't ban all escooters in Barcelona, they made helmets, insurance, license and plate compulsory if you want to ride on public roads
You would think they would have better things to do "like catching crooks" rather than chasing down e-bike batteries. What a waste of time & money. Typical for NYC.

Something better to do? People have been killed and property destroyed because of shoddy batteries and illegal chargers, and idiots like this shop owner are ruining things for the rest of us. I am glad that the NYFD is doing this and helping to keep us safe.

@@ericschneider7648 Try looking at the electrical supply in the USA... how many different pugs sockets and ratings no wonder there are fires... and the plug it`s self no insulation on the pins oh that would not even be legal in my country UK due to risk of electrocution & death from use. UK , 1 plug fit`s all in the UK insulated live & neutral pins and needs the 3rd/earth pin to even put the socket in then there is the switch too 3 points of safety.

@@ericschneider7648you sound like the story on the news. Outrageous claims backed up by no facts. Armchair experts everywhere
I do design military grade lithium batteries. The chemistry Americans use in their ebike is not the safest, good for unmanned drones. UL certification is only an extra tax you will pay
Messaging you from Oregon so far in our area there doesn't seem to be any UL certified lithium batteries available that being said what's a good idea to always see the reviews and go with the proper price don't go with the bargain. I charge my batteries responsibly inside of a fireproof box that's tested to 3,300 degrees which is the temperature that a lithium battery will burn out when it has a runaway. Chargers are the ones that came from the manufacturer of the batteries that I purchased and they are on a countdown timer so that the power shuts off pretty much when the battery is done charging. I live in a condominium and I do this out on a concrete patio. The main thing is getting a quality battery and charger that comes with it and not overcharging I do have a fast charger that I carry with me on the bike in a paneer for those times that I need to give it a boost for the return trip. There hasn't been too much in the news in Oregon that I have found discussing ebike batteries and the need for UL listing. There has been some discussion of this on a website called Johnny nerdout which can be found on KZread
I'm from Melbourne, Australia... We have had golf carts catch fire here as well as bikes.. There is also an increase in the news about ebikes catching fire.
when you get down to it ul certification is also a scam. you literally pay a fee and send in some schematics/pictures/drawings diagrams of your battery and they give you the listing.
He was warned three times and given instruction on what needed to be corrected over a period of several months yet didn’t change any of his bad practices. Getting arrested after a fourth failed inspection seems more than fair. Other video showed the charging area, and it looks like a huge electrical fire hazard, with multiple chargers plugged into strips and extension cords, tightly spaced, and many hung up by their cords rather than supported by cradles that don’t put stress on the cords.
It's not just having a UL certified battery, you need to let the battery/motor/controller to cool down before charging because that can cause shorts in the power lines that melt.... Also never charge more than 1 battery on a circuit in a house or shop unless it's a 220v or higher. A lot of people are melting the electric sockets in their walls and not realizing it's already failed.... SMH

I talked to the UL Agency. The “ebike specialist” never got back to me 😂😂 (true story)

That`s the fault of the house electrical regulations... KZread UK plug and sockets look how much safety they have... eg live neutral pins insulated no chance of electric shock, needs the earth pin to open the Live & Neutral openings, the on/off switch, 1 plug/socket 13 amps 240 volts used for toasters, washing machines, hot plates, microwaves, blenders, hoovers welders and more any problems the replicable fuse blows in the plug or trips the resettable circuit breakers at the meter.

Batteries are Trojan horses...don't know what's going on inside..need display grid with squares equalling the battery count with the voltage for each.. then make like tv remotes removable battery feature. Have the battery shut off if too low til user replaces it It's usually one rogue cell that causes the problems.
Non of my e-bikes or e-scooters have certified batteries. I have had no trouble with any of them, but at least I did get my bikes and scooters from legitimate sources. Going forward, I will be looking for UL certified bikes and scooters.
I hope he doesn't get charged with "Battery" & all other charges to be discharged
Battery on top of the frame does what to your centre of gravity? Not good for stability but understand your point about debris on the road
Florida. Do these regulations cover Lithium-Iron-Phosphate batteries also? Ron W4BIN
Looking for Money that is it! Dam shame!❤
this why you do not buy third party battery's. you buy the one only bike company's make
heres the white elephant... ok. so one buys a UL certified battery and charger. if it fails, does the UL pay incurred damages?

Good question. I’m going to reach out to a couple of brands that have the UL certification and find out what the process is if their battery causes a fire. Thanks for the question!
These are cheaply made chinease batterys and the people using them know nothing about battery safety they dont have smart bms and they overcharge them
I finally custom built my 1st ebike it's a hub bafang kit hopefully here in California they don't get stupid eith the laws they are trying to do licenses and that mess they will want insurance eventually i bt it's stupid and a scam. I think
