Bike Park Wales vs A Guy Who Doesn't Know What He's Doing (part 2)

So in part 1 I had gotten lost on the closed trails at Bike Park Wales, then I had gotten a good warm up on a few red and blues. I've even been successful in doing the entry drop off on Enter the Dragon.
But now it was time to go full hardcore, well at least as hard as I can go, and begin pushing myself to the limit on my Orange Five.
If I go all the way to a place like Bike Park Wales and don't at least give the black runs a try, I feel I have missed out.
I think I had a go at all the black runs there, apart from 50 Shades of Black which was one of the closed trails.
I had a great time, but I am having to take quite a bit of punishment in the process.

What as dangerous as having novices on blacks, still on two wheels, who can't see behind them and are going under half trail speed? Don't think so, you run up on them really fast. At least walking up the trail he can see you and jump out the way. Nice to see he wants to get it right, but it's safer to get back on and get out of the way.

Fair play to you bud . Watched a lot of your videos now, I think you just need to stick to the trails you find comfortable, and just build your confidence up. The Blues and reds at Bpw are lovely. Flowy and fast, with smaller gaps and rollers you can gradually start hitting them harder and faster. And as said previously, speed will make it so much easier for you through the rock gardens etc. Trying to hard on the difficult stuff will just keep knocking your confidence.. Not preaching to you, but we've all been there 👍 Keep up the vids bud.

To tell the truth Dean, the blues and reds, I've ridden most of them at bike park wales, most of them fairly badly admittedly. I used to crash on the reds. I know I don't have the skills to ride the black trails, but I just don't give a fuck haha

Dave, in all seriousness and although I understand that you want to challenge yourself, you really do need to know where your limits are. Riding stuff beyond your skill level will at some point bite you big time and you'll end up with a life changing injury. I've a friend who made a mistake on a big trail feature at Tidworth Free Ride last year and cracked three of her vertebrae. She could very easily have been paralysed. Best advice is get some coaching, get your technique dialled in and then start riding more challenging stuff.

  • @DaveJenvey

    @DaveJenvey

    6 жыл бұрын

yeah i am gonna get a lot of coaching when i come back Mark. I know i push it too hard at times. I dunno why i do, its just something inside of me that makes me do it. I'm really not trying to impress anybody, its just i hate walking away from stuff. I'd rather smash myself to bits and be in loads of pain than swallow my pride and walk away. I don't want the mountain to beat me. i don't want to be controlled by fear. But it is a crazy attitude, that isn't going to do me any favours and i think i need to re-adjust how i ride if i want to be in this sport for the long haul

Dave, I learned a hard lesson just over two years ago, having been biking for about 7 years or so and thinking that I was a reasonably capable rider. I was racing in a Mini Enduro at the FOD and stacked it on a steep, technical stage, the front wheel washing out as I had my weight too far back. I hit a tree headfirst and broke my jaw in two places. I was lucky in that it didn't need to be wired up, but I was on soft food for 6 weeks. That crash was the decision maker for me, it was a case of getting coaching so that I could improve or give it up because otherwise my technique would only let me down again. Coaching is without doubt the best upgrade you can get.

Hahaha... I'm just getting into or rather I'm about to get into DH after a lengthy stint doing motorbike trackdays but have just moved to Swansea so going to give DH a go instead for the adrenaline rush. This vid had me laughing (with you obviously, not at you!).. love that you unashamedly do the commentary on video that goes through my novice mind when I'm trying a run for the first, second, third time! I thought there would be a lot of techniques I could transfer but the leaning part is the opposite, I'm used to hanging off on the lowside of my bike whereas this needs you to lean the bike but your body remain in a more upright position so totally unintuitive for me at the minute but was great to see your vid and the 'crash.. try again' approach. (I get that walking back up a track after an off isn't the best idea but it's all a learning curve ain't it!) :)

Hi Dave, another great video but have to agree with a lot of the other comments, definitely taking a lot of the sections too slow, try get your friends to watch you and give you some advice on body position and where you're looking as it would appear you're looking directly in front of your wheel rather than ahead. Also you don't have to do he hardest runs, you're better off keep doing the runs you feel good on to build confidence before tackling the harder sections...anyway keep up the videos and as I've said before maybe get some coaching it, its definitely worth the money

Fair play to you Dave. I'm over there now, first time. Did the blues and a good few of the reds today. Tomorrow is my last day. After seeing you doing the blacks, I think I might try a couple. Shitting myself though. I'm okay with the reds, but I'll be out of my comfort zone with the blacks. Anyway, inspiring stuff, thanks.

another good vt dave. i think some of your falls are caused to you just riding some sections to slow. i know its hard to judge what your riding blind, but the majority of your falls are pretty low speed , and feel your not getting your weight over the back of the bike. carnt you get the guys your riding with to watch you in certain sections, so they can advice you on your riding style, think it would be a great help to you. but fair play to you for attacking the trials as always.

one observation amd criticism I must make is that, when you are pushing back up, you are pushing up smack bang in the middle of the track, very dangerous for yourself and other quicker riders, especially at that top section of ETD. just keep it to one side mate. also fair play for getting back on the bike amd giving it a second attempt, thats what its all about 👍

Dave you took a proper kicking that day didnt ya, But TBH it was self inflicted. I get quite a bit of peer pressure to go down blacks from my younger, stupider, fitter, braver and more able mates, but I just tell them to fuck right off and go and ride my own thing, usually several times so I can get faster on a couple of lines rather than hitting one blind once and then move on to the next. Anyone can scrape themselves down blacks but unless you can hammer down them, they are always going to feel like hard work so whats the point, if you want to progress on steep gnarly stuff you need to be looking for short push up sections to get to grips with, those trails at BPW are pretty long for UK parks so its inevitable that your going to feel dejected or beaten to death by the time you get to the bottom. I like to go as quick as my balls and the terrain will allow me so that means blues and reds. Ive not had a single off at any DH park or on any trail in the 2 years since I took up cycles and I always finish the day off grinning ear to ear. You'll find plenty of short little segments on reds that will progress your skills without your run feeling like an ordeal from top to bottom. Im the same with snowboarding, I can hit 40mph on blues but get on the steeper stuff and I have to back right off or I end up getting fucked up.
