BIKE FITTING: HOW A PROPER FIT SHOULD GO

In this video as I'm recovering from the two broken wrists, we did a fit on Jack (who is usually holding the camera) to hopefully show you the process of how a bike fit works.

    Had a bike fit with Dan in 2022 after developing anterior knee pain after doing North Coast 500. Great insight and great advice - bike fit has revolutionised my comfort on bike. Will be back when eventually get a new bike.

    Last had a bike fit 3 yrs ago in London near a big park! Currently looking to get a bike fit again with the prerequisite that they also have to be a or have been a physio. Their knowledge of biomechanics and how physical limitations affect a fixed position and flexibility is a massive help in my opinion. Great video lads 🙌🏻

    I completely agree with you. Having someone who is also a physio has been a huge thing to me as well. Dan is an incredibly knowledgable (and humble) man

    Can relate to this so much when I had my fit, very similar problems saddle to low because of tight hips and hamstrings etc etc. Be interesting to see a follow up to this if and when Jack has time to put some miles in.

    @ChrisHallRides I'm okay Chris ......I have a welcome distraction tomorrow morning: my good friend Mark Turnbull is racing Ironman Lanzarote tomorrow: he's hoping to bag a world championship slot for his age group ( 55). He should have been at kona last year, but came off his TT bike 7 days before race day with a broken collarbone and had to withdraw. Fingers crossed for Mark 🤞

    I’m unclear from the links in description whether Dan and Jack do bike fitting - assuming so. Where are they located? I’m really needing to get my bike fit reassessed - at least 5-6 years since last done - when I spec’s my bike and had it built up, but I’m 5-6 years older and less flexible than then, and not getting any younger! (55). Especially interested as right at the start of the video there was mention about long days rides and multi day rides.

    So Jack is actually a pretty new cyclist and he’s the chap who helps me with making the videos. He filmed all the badlands videos for example. Dan is a qualified physiotherapist and qualified bikefitter. He’s based in Matlock and here’s a link to his website: ukbikefit.com I’d agree it’s definitely worth having your fit looked at again if it’s been 5/6 years since the last time your fit was assessed

    Thanks Chris, that’s the job.the original link in the video notes didn’t take you through to that site and was for the bike fit kit / equipment, so that’s grand. I’m in Newcastle so Matlock isn’t out of the question for me - I’ve a (non-cycling) mate in Belper so an excuse to catch up with him too. Reckon I’ll reach out to Dan & the team and get booked in. Knee pains starting 4-5 weeks ago too so somethings not right and needs to be - I’m doing London to Paris again in July for charity (my 6th), but cycling to the start this time! Jack’s pretty handy with the filming and cinematography then 👍👍

    Lost me at cleat wedging for "more support" to address pronation. Flimsy stock footbeds in standard shoes can be swapped out right?

  • @ChrisHallRides

    @ChrisHallRides

    Footbeds don’t do the same as cleat wedges. Footbeds support the good and cleat wedges angle it. Also we were limited with what we could do with Jack’s shoes as he needs new shoes. No point putting a footbed in a shoe that to start with isn’t ideal

    @@ChrisHallRides Footbeds can be moved across shoes though right? And many footbeds (solestar, G8) address pronation from collapsed arches. Bike Fit James has a whole spiel on cleat wedging.

    @@richcole3931 Hey Richie, I think you're confusing ankle pronation for arch collapse. Two very different things. You can have ankle pronation without arch collapse or fallen arches, and vice versa. Hope that helps :)

    Hi both enjoyed the video but the same issues arise - a perception of what normal/abnormal, the construct of core stability/weakness and bio mechanical insufficiencies etc etc. The range of normality in any single human is evidenced here - there has to be a middle way surely that gets away from some theoretical norm or standard and one that understands the actual demand of the task e.g. Dan makes the point of making sure that one sets a bike up for the most demanding situation, but over time on the moving bike different issues arise on each unique ride, thus can not be simulated on a bike rig or static bike. The issues that arise are a false perception that having been bike fitted you can/will be in a “best” position but there is no such thing - people move at all the interfaces mentioned, pedals, saddle, handlebars and they should be encouraged to do so - attempts to remain in the best position are more likely to lead to issues than solve them - very happy to discuss in person - I have offered this to Francis and James they ignore it but as a fellow Physio Dan I hope you would be happy to do so.
