Just switched over to a steamroller myself, took what I could from my old Jamis Beatnik. Bunch of budget parts: alex rims wheels, old lasco cranks, tekro brakes I was given. Few new bits to make up the cockpit. Really love the bones of this bike, first Surly frame I've ridden, really love it.

Bike of mine has similar white frame with no bosses, no decals. No names on it. I thought about spraying junctions in different color but then decided lots of marks and scratches it has (all done by previous owner, frame is only one year old) give it enough character. This frame was an eyeopener - I started to like white as a frame color.

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzread.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

I would have bought inexpensive MTB pinned flat pedals off Amazon over the cheap plastic pedals in your build. Then you could have skipped the nylon foot straps.

Super dope as always! Only thing I would have changed would be adding a single white spacer in the headset stack or using white brake cable housing instead of black.

That would look slick too. I wonder how much of this was preferred by the builder’s partner. I’m sure they discussed aspects like cable housing colour.

Do you think people will be more eager to steal it if they see the surly brand?

Good question. I’d say most likely yes, mainly because if it’s un branded they wouldn’t know what it is. Quite a few people remove the branding from surly or similar bikes for that exact reason.

The first thing that strikes me is .. after I've been building bicycles for 10 years (most of them fixed gear), it doesn't seem strange to me that there is no freewheel and no second brake XD For people who plan to build a new bike for themselves: It has to be said that for some parts (these will not reduce the price even further), it makes no difference whether they are bought new or used. These include (in Germany) seatpost, handlebar (someone ALWAYS sells a riser near you). However, good, new bike grips make a big difference. And I think it's important to pay attention to sealed bearings. Pedals, bottom bracket, headset, axles. It is better to spend a little more on it, but you save yourself buying a new one for many years because the bearings are rough. Even if some offers seem tempting cheap, check what it is beforehand. Possibly a "cool, old Italian frame" for little money, but the necessary parts are so rare and expensive due to their dimensions that you don't just wait forever to find something suitable, but also pay exorbitant prices for them. So make sure you have the usual measurements on your first bike. Otherwise, as always a great video :)
