BIGGEST Mistake that KILLS ALTERNATORS!!! Dead Battery Current Draw & Alternator Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is probably the most common mistake concerning high output alternators and aftermarket car audio batteries. Just like our smartphones, 12v batteries deserve a good CHARGE here and there too!!! Choosing an actual "battery charger" instead of your alternator can really help prolong the life of it. That's because a designated 12v charger provides a safer and more regulated charging environment than a daily driving alternator does. And who knows, hidden under the hood, it could be DUMPING tons of current and potentially causing early FAILURE!!!
Thanks For Supporting :)

    @@SOBERSCUMBASSHEAD All electric motors such as those on a cooling fan on your radiator draw a lot of current to get moving.. Electric motors usually appear as a short until they start spinning.. A quality motor or one with a decent capacitor to start turning should be available because the standard fans are not very efficient.. Just do a clamp on it and have it turn on, you'll be surprised at the current draw to get them moving..

  • @neoplasmax

    @neoplasmax

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Paul-gz5dp One thing I'd think of if you saw smoke coming from alternator, check the back main connection from your battery.. Sometimes it will ground out on the frame of the alternator and eventually either blow the in-line slo-blow fuse or it will kill your battery or start a fire.. i've seen these go bad and even had one happen in my current vehicle where the alternator was changed and the boot was left off that covers that wire.. after a few bumps, I saw my dash lights flicker like it was losing power and it was.. it was shorted to ground and the wire was melting cause the last guy got the engine from had circumvented the inline fuses and was direct to battery.. If the smoke came from inside, there is not a lot inside a alternator, they are easy to rebuild and most the time, you talking about brushes or diodes gone bad.. High amperage draw like seen in this vehicle will kill the rectifier eventually..

    That’s why I always test electrical systems with the scope with an amp clamp along with checking voltage. Current draw back to the battery should go down quickly after starting. Seen lots of alternators fail shortly after being replaced from weak batteries constantly drawing excessive current. As someone who does this for a living I’m kind of impressed to see you talking about this. Not many people know to look for things like this. Keep spreading the knowledge.

    The other thing people will need to know, is that if you have a big audio setup and you're constantly drawing high current from the alternator, you're going to be learning how to yank alternators and put new brushes in em. :) In my case, until I finally just belted up a second alternator, I was rebrushing the main alternator every couple of years. So remember, if you want to go anywhere that having your vehicle quit on you might be kind of dangerous, think about the alternator. I once had an alternator fail on me two hours north of Red Earth, Alberta, way out in the bush on a lease road after driving a friend to a job site. It was -30C in the middle of winter, no cell phones (This was the mid 90's) and the only thing I could think of was to try and limp to Athabasca (I had close friends there that I could stay with). So, as soon as I seen the light come on, I got out and pulled every fuse I could except ignition and even pulled the plug off one of the headlights to cut the current draw in half. I even turned off the cabin blower heater and instead, set the intake to fresh and cracked one of the side windows to "pull" air in through the intake so we at least wouldn't freeze. We made it, but barely. That's like 25 years or more now, but I seem to recall it took us about three to four hours to make it to Athabasca. If I hadn't pulled fuses AND ran on a single headlight, we wouldn't have made it. The one remaining headlight was barely a candle glow by the time we rolled into Athabasca. Before we went in to get a bit of sleep at my friends place, I tried it to see if the starter would turn over. Not even a click. Athabasca is still two and a half hours from home too, so if we'd have pushed for home, we'd have been screwed. Ah, to be young again! :D

    One thing and the first thing you need to do to prevent any further damage from happening is to locate and map out the flow of water on your property. I can tell you right now from not seeing anything that if your ceiling is falling in and theres severe foundation damage that somewhere there is a ditch that is stopped up or maybe a channel to direct the water flow has eroded away and is causing water to migrate towards your housepad instead of away from it. the dirt under the house is become saturated and is suppose to be the dryest ...Driest...(however your spell it), part of your property. A house cant sit on mud. Shoot me a message for my contact info if you have any questions or need a second opinion on anything. Youve helped so many of us. I'd be glad to help -Brent

    The alternator dosnt just charge your battery it powers everything in your car. Most people think the battery powers everything WRONG. The battery is only used to give the spark needed to start the engine once engine is started the serpentine belt moves around the alternator and keeps everything powered. If you turn the engine off then you are using battery power.

    With a completely stock car and stock audio system, there is no need to put your car on an external charger. The stock alternator is designed to handle a 100% duty cycle on that configuration, so no.... you're not stressing it out by leaning solely on it. The only exception to this is if you have a bad battery or you're literally starting the car for extremely short trips with headlights, h/ac blowers, etc running, which don't allow the alt to fully top off the battery to replenish what the starter sucked out of it. My guess on why his alt is running wide open for so long is that he's continually sucking power out of the battery faster than the alt can return it. And also, he mentioned a lithium ion battery pack he had integrated with his agm auxilliaries and vented plate batt under the hood. If he's running the l/i without a tailored charge controller, then the lithium-ion is probably maxing out what the alternator's voltage regulator will allow because they can drink as hard as they deliver... much faster than the lead/acid based batteries which the car's regulator is designed for. If simply hooked in parallel with the others, it will even act as a buffer, both feeding the other batteries while sucking full-flow on the alternator. Now there's a chance he's got the li-ion isolated with its own controller, and simply, as I said before, not allowing the alt to catch up. But this is something you're just not likely to ever have to worry about with a fully stock configuration in your car.

    EXO, I love these build videos where you explain everything. I'm a beginner bass head, started with a 10" then 2 12" now I'm working with a 15" and constantly doing upgrades. A big problem I have though is I don't have some equipment like the scope and also I don't know all the technical stuff, Like what volts it's supposed to be at and other things. But I love it and will keep working at it. And I love these videos!

    Yes, you're right. Winston is only affordable lithium on market, same thing in Russia for example. Here's very few cars that even could run multiple alternators, average car has 1-2 liter engine because of emissions. Old car with v8 engine for example is very expensive to keep because of taxes and insurance, even if you don't drive it much :D

    Yes, I have two stock 120A alternators for example. There might not be another person with double alternators in Finland. We usually change the biggest alternator available with same fitting, example in my situation: 1.2l stock alt 65A -> 1.6l stock alt with air conditioning 120A. And then we buy battery bank big enough to keep the voltage +12v to get the rated power from amplifiers :)
