Thank you for mentioning Wilhelm Gustloff. For those who wonder about Marinesco here is the explanation: At the end of WWII many Germnas were evacuating from occupied Poland in "Operation Hanibal". One of the ships used for this plan was SS Wilhelm Gustloff which sunk and took around 9000 lives. This was no accident as it was hit by 3 torpedos launched from the Soviet submarine under command of cpt. Alexander Marinesco. Some dishonorable mentions every one should know: -Cambodian Genocide (Cambodia): 1.5-3 million deaths. -Stalin's Great Purge (Soviet Union): 23-30 million deaths. -Great Leap Forward (People's Republic of China): 50-80 million deaths.

You forgot to mention the genocide of the indigenous peoples of North America. More than 30 million Indians were exterminated in the 100 years from 1800 to 1900. The total population of native Indians in the United States fell from 12.5 million to 135 thousand by 1900. This is terrible and inhumane.

For the Titanic one, the number tends to fluctuate when it comes to casualties I seen some sources say 1,502 or 1,503, depends on where you get the number from Some sources do say the final count was 1,496 while 712 did survive.
