It's LEGO. Since the land masses are plates rather than tiles, it would be a very simple matter to add extra plates on to places with mountains, etc. Maybe use cheese slopes for the big ranges. SOOOOO many options. I mean... it's not the sort of set that screams, "this is perfect like it is, don't modify it!" or anything

@@coasterguy Problem is that you have to outsorce thousands of pieces by yourself now, making it way more costly and it's a huge amount of work to plan which pieces and how many to use.

@@AlbertoDsign I see your point, but it doesn't matter what colours Lego chose, there would be a bunch of people unhappy with the choices. I love that the land masses are white, as that makes it very easy to swap out the pieces to show where you've been or add little micro scale landmarks or whatever. And while yes, you might need to source the pieces you want, they're pretty cheap to do because they're so small. Also, people who've been into Lego for a minute likely have a bunch of pieces they can use in their collections already.

@@coasterguy I understand what you mean too. But, being lego, if the land were coloured that wouldn't mean you can't change it either, so it works both ways. Micro scale landmarks would be super cool, but those could be added to a non-white map again. And then, I know people who make custom mosaics using the Star Wars and alike as a base, and by ordering the pieces for those they still cost to bricklink them way way more than a normal set, we're talking about 200 euro or more in some cases. This is much bigger, so it isn't far fetched to think that we would be talking upwards of 500 euro in parts alone to customize, that is twice of what the whole set costs, for less pieces. Plus then again all the man hours to design it and source the parts. And not everybody has a big pile of loose round 1x1s to use, I've been collecting for many years for example yet the only ones I have are from the extras, since I have all of my sets built. And even then 1x1 plates aren't the most common pieces either.

This feels like they had an over-production in one of the factories, and this was the best they could think of to get rid of all those little studs.

Europe is generally the center of world maps here in the US as well. Just looks better, nothing's chopped up

Except for a small tip in Far Eastern Russia, and obviously Antarctica.

I wouldn't mind this having the highest piece count, but considering how little piece variety there is and how many of them are the cheapest possible pieces to produce, it feels off that this would be around half the price of the colosseum. I think 150-170 would be a more fitting price.

Every kid who ever played around with MS paint could have done that, so no money for a designer either...

@@heall_8589 That may be, and overall I would rate Lego bricks the best, but there are multiple other brands that are just as good. Some have bricks that hold much better, or different shapes. All in all, Legos prices arent justified by their quality.

This looks like the most 'not fun' set of LEGO ever.

I guess the idea is that you fill in the white map with markers for places you've been or whatever, but as was pointed out the problem is that the seabed is too colourful so your markers are not as visible as most would want, especially as your most typical travel destinations are generally close to the coast or maybe even on islands. I think LEGO "overthought" the palette a bit, trying to make it colourful but then not noticing it tends to grab the attention from any markers you may have placed. A more traditional, subdued set of colours for the water would have been nice. I guess you could always buy a couple of The Sith sets for the dark blues and greys ;-)

I get what they were going for I guess, but honestly this thing is just a boring ugly build.

Imagine how much more tedious the build would become if you wanted all the LEGO logos on the studs to be perfectly aligned. You could even go one step further by also aligning the injection marks for the tiles.

I would have preferred an antique-styled map, the type displaying two separate hemispheres side-by-side.

To me it looks incomplete with the landmasses just done in plain white. Keeping the oceans a blue-scale and the land brown/green would make it more appealing to me. Or better yet, make it 3 dimensional... a Globe !

If they could have given the landmasses an iota of texture, perhaps some different heights where prominent mountain ranges are, perhaps different colors based on forest/grass/desert/cities/tundra. I think people would appreciate that over ocean depth indicators, which could be to some extent with various shades of blue

I learned that a couple years ago, here in Brazil we use the same map, europe and africa in the middle However, there are some countries that put their nation on the center to help young kids identify where their country is located But anyway, i rather say that this mao configuration is the best of all because it show almost the whole map without cutting any country in half

There is a projection that has the US in the center that was used to “boost patriotism” and “support the country” (think from about 50s-70s, mainly in elementary school learning), but it was pretty largely abandoned years ago because it distorts everything worse than the mercator projection (Europe and Africa in the center)

If I'm not wrong in Russia polar maps are often used because in the standard planisphere with the equator in the middle the proportions of countries in the far north or south are all messed up (for instance, Russia is a very big country but far less wide than it appears to be on most maps).

The colors hurt my eyes, it kinda looks like looking at a 3D movie without 3D glasses.

They did have an actual Death Star II UCS back in the day instead of that minifigure-based abomination they keep re-releasing these days. It even had a scale mini Imperial Star Destroyer to show the scale, and if you've seen that video of the truly minifigure-scale 50-meter Imperial Star Destroyer...yeah, don't attempt a minifigure-scale Death Star II. It will take up an entire town at the very least.

When I first heard Lego was doing a map set, a globe designed like the UCS Death Star II is what I had in mind, too!

As someone who lives in North America, I’m used to seeing my continent on the left side with Europe in the middle. I’ve never seen a map with North America in the center

I just finished building, and the hardest part by far is putting the 8 columns together after connecting 5 squares together to make the column. The world map itself has 10,558 pieces (10,240 dots plus 40 squares plus everything else mentioned in the instructions.) Everything else is there so you can customize the ocean and make an octopus or rubics cube.

I'm not gonna lie: I find the colors and the design absolutely beautiful, this might be the most aesthetically pleasing map I've ever seen. Having said that, the building experience looks like a chore and I would prefer the frame to be at least available in different color options.

I really like the colors on the oceans. It looks much more interesting and more like an abstract painting than a boring all blue surface

I feel like having it show the elevation of the land would be way more interesting than the sea or better yet both but that would take a lot of colors

I'd definitely get more creative with the oceans, the example from inside the box was dope

I think its the perfect set to use all the pieces to make custom pictures

@@oh-totoro Right? Like, have people seen these coast lines? That’s just atrocious. It’s artsy but a terrible map. As an ocean map, sure, why the hack not, but as a ”world map” ? I have seen so many better moc designs, this is cool for ocean enthusiasts but I doubt the majority will be able to appreciate this kind of design choice whatsoever.

I remember when I was younger it was called "ministeck". Great work Lego...

I like the 16x16 backing blocks and hope to see them replace the regular base plates in modular buildings.

This world map looks pretty awesome, and will sit wonderfully above my build table!

Australia's dont use the Australia-centred world map. We use the euro-africa centred, mainly cos, durr, English colony, and also, no landmass is broken up.

I wish Lego would have given us realistic landscape colours for the land and the oceans, like, tan pieces for dessert/sandy/dry places, and green pieces for foresty/grassy/bushy places, same with the oceans and seas, lighter blue pieces for shallow areas, dark blue pieces for deeper areas

To me the heat map of the ocean seems to symbolize where all the plastic is currently swirling around. So I guess this is educational :P Nice job reviewing it.

I think it looks cool and I've always wanted to do a mosaic style art build. I loved the idea of the pattern variations in the ocean area. I also like the idea of experimenting with color variations on my own, so the instructions could be used with different colors of one's choice. I really like your detailed reviews!

Technically the biggest Lego set before the map was a Lego Vhima set for the 3rd deason, it was given to a winner of some sort of competition and it has all the fire and ice themed sets in it for Lego Chima since that was season 3 It has over 10K pieces but less then 11K

These reviews are just fantastic, love the little creative additions you add! I have wanted this exact idea of a Lego set for years, but the bright colors really wouldn't fit my house... :/ Might just buy it and change out the colors for a more "traditional" style world map. Going to have to move quickly before those tiles go up in price on BL :O

I love the set and the colours used are real cool in person, very graphic design-y.

If Lego makes it, Lego nerds will buy it. I look forward to their upcoming "Black Hole" series where you can make the various black holes in the current known universe - the tricky bit will be figuring out the order the black pieces need to be placed.

i actually really like this. yeah, you could have had some cool topography stuff and play with depth, but i actually really like how the colors look together and the fact that the continents are plain and the oceans are detailed unlike what you usually see of normal maps.

I used the colour guide in a different way. I clipped it to the side of each baseplate I was building to help me keep track of what row I was on.

It seems like they took the laziest route possible to beat the record by just getting many of the exact same pieces. It was bad enough when they did the same thing but to a less extent with the coliseum.

I just think they went over the Colosseums part count pretty much accidentally as they just wanted to make a giant map of the world, I don't really think they tried to set a record here. For there to be a giant art piece, there must be a lot of pieces as well.

I am glad that the biggest set is a non licensed thing. Because that’s what Lego is supposed to be about. Imagination and education.

After I got the Set, I decided to change the White Frame to Black Frame (given that I already had a lot of matching pieces in Black, I didn't have to buy seperate additional packs), and it looks way better than the White Frame. I also decided to mark the Locations differently, with a Long Red LEGO Rod instead of those Dots - and I have to say, it is much more visible than the way LEGO intended.

Considering you use to work for Lego, it’s very nice to see an honest review. It’s a shame that Lego don’t use you as a consultant and send you a near final draft to get your opinion before mass production. A few different coloured tiles would have useful as markers of placed you’ve either visited or want to visit.

I'm super-geeked about this set and can't wait to get my hands on it. There's a blank space on my wall that I've been looking to fill and this is perfect. As a roller coaster enthusiast, I've traveled all over the globe to find new coasters to ride and this will be a fun way to keep track of my travels (although you're right, doing it will white cones seems like not the best way to do that. I'll be using pieces from my own collection, maybe flags?). I'm also happy that the land masses are plates rather than tiles, because it will be easier to remove those to swap to other colours once I'm able to visit new places again. As for the buildable colour guide, YES YES YES YES OMG I wish they'd included that with the Beatles sets, as many of those colours were much closer in hue than the ones in this set and trying to tell the difference between the dark blues, dark browns, black, and such became a real eye strain, especially if there was a bit of glare on the instruction book. You mention the audio download - what was it? Music from around the world? And yes, while "The Biggest Lego Set Ever" doesn't immediately conjure up a Lego Art set, that doesn't keep me from wanting this, big time. I was even thinking about doing a MOC of the world map already and now I can still do that, but without having to source those 16x16 plates or a boatload of round tiles.

It is better than building the colosseum, the colosseum is much more tedious to build

I feel like this set was made exclusively for me. I like maps. I REALLY like maps. I have about four dozen maps of Earth, maybe a little over one hundred country maps, four globes, around five maps of Middle Earth, one map of Oz, three maps of the known world from A Song of Ice and Fire, about ten maps of Tamriel and its constituent provinces, multiple maps of the Fallout universe, maps from Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, GTA SA, Vice City, 4, and 5, maps of the Assassin’s Creed games, maps of Hyrule and the Mushroom Kingdom, three maps of Azeroth, a map of the Continent from The Witcher series, a map of Albion from all three Fable games, various maps from Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, a map of the Pokémon World up to Sun and Moon, and about maybe fifty or so other maps from various other properties, as well as many Atlas’, game strategy guides with map readouts, and historical map books. I even make my own maps, sometimes taking commission for them, working mainly with fantasy and sci-fi, but also alternate Earth maps for both my and my clients’ book series, game series, or RPG campaigns. So I love maps, they make me happy, and I just see this set as another beautiful map that I can hang on my wall for a relatively reasonable price (Lord only knows that I have spent way more on some of my other maps, like a woodcarved map of Middle Earth, or a topographical globe from my library’s surplus sale). I don’t have a lot of oceanographical maps either, so that’s cool too.

0:16 UCS Millennium Falcon was 2017 not 2019. I don't think the Hogwarts Castle was ever the biggest because of that

Because if you have fun building with lego, the set with the most pieces would usually have the most biggest payoff when it finally comes together. This one does seem kind of silly in the fact that it feels like it was made just to break the record with quite an uninspiring set

Great review! I think they should had add a more detailed frame, something new and original, an extra feature. This set feels very bland, I see it for buyers to fill up their stores or stocks. Personally if I own one and base on the color scheme I would reshape the map design into a Predator on a tree or his mask. The colours remind me of predator’s heat vision.

As a map, even a simplified one, this is a disgrace. The coastlines are just terrible. It’s a nice gimmick and one may use it to build an actually good map but this is just so off putting… Someone who loves the oceans may appreciate the design but oh boy, I have seen so much good Lego art over the years that this feels more like someone took a hobby project to the company and for whatever reason, it got approved.

What would be cool is if they made if look 3d by elevating the mountains across the world.

I would use the spares to make a nice compass in the corner

Nos THIS is a review👌🏻 as for the white tiles, they could be used to build/represent height with your own extra pieces and give it the extra spice to make the set complete. With that said, great quick review

Really weird colour choices... think LEGo have missed the obvious and you are just left scratching your head wondering "why?"

The normal colour you find on normal maps.

Having the land masses be white looks stupid (IMHO) ... I wonder what the map would look like with all of the white studs used for land masses replaced with either brown or black studs? Then you could match with a brown frame or a black frame!

Well after reading a comment or two that the colour choices are off, I think brown or black land would be to dark of an all over look. But one could easily try it by removing the white pieces.

@@SpykersB ... yeah, you’re probably right .. black or brown may be too dark ... but there are several choices of color other than white ... maybe a nougat, tan or salmon for the land masses?

@@thomashayes507 hmmmm 🤔, ya got me thinking, what if the water had all different blues only, vibrant blues! And then make the land vibrant greens, some browns, touch black for mountain tips, and the colours you mentioned? 😃...... hmmm 😒 I don’t know could end up boring. 🙃

@@SpykersB ... what might have been even more cool would be if the land masses had various shades of brown, tan and nougat to represent height of mountains and valleys to go along with the elevations of the ocean floor! I’d buy that one for sure! Having the land masses white is just too boring for me!

It was nice to see the progress of these "huge" sets. This one is an interesting one, I must say. One thing solely is the price of the thing and another the looks of it. When I first saw it in the Lego shop, I was in awe and was starting to actually think ways how to get it. After a few days and watching this video, I don't know if it's for me, actually. I live in a place where most of the wall space is already covered up and the posters and such never were quite my thing. But I think I might go for a smaller and a little cheaper one at some point! All in all, it looks good and I'm glad Lego has started to make these!

It doesn’t look that good in my opinion. I am not a big fan of the colors, and the build is probably rather boring
