The Sheriff, still considered the largest Elk Bull in this area, is all fired up around these cows and satellite Elk Bulls during the beginning of the Elk Rut. His Bugles clearly demonstrate the sounds of a dominant Elk Bull, signaling other Bulls that he is not to be messed with. More on the Elk Rut in Canada's Rockies..

We hear that Bulls may lose up to 20-25%(possibly even more) of their body weight, but that also depends upon food factors. The Sheriff seems to have a pretty good balance of activity and down time as he gets older. He seems to use his powerful bugles a little more than challenging everything that moves, as he did in the past. Thank you for your support Sue!
Nice high fence bull
I live in Colorado. These guys jumped an 8 foot fence. No problem. They are bigger than horses. In the wild they will fight or kill domesticated horses.

Look at the antlers on this male. The size and points on his rack. He’s a huge beast too. It’s amazing what testosterone does to males during the rutting season. The irresistible urge to mate with females, the drive to fight other males. Bull elk are among the most magnificent and masculine animals in the wild.
