Bigger, tighter mouse maze experiments

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Experimenting with wild mice in mazes. Mice are amazingly good at traversing mazes, it turns out, so I had to make the maze more complicated. But the shrew reigned victorious

Y’know what you should do? You should make those kinds of maxes that have a big center. Step 1: make a maze with a center that has a entrance and an exit. Step 2: place a door flap at both of the doorways(?) at the center so that the mouse can enter the the maze and head into the center but not exit the center through the entrance. The mouse will be forced to get out of the maze through the other door flap that will lead them to the exit of the maze. This will prevent them from coming in and out through only one route. They’ll need to learn how to enter and exit the center.

Hello fellow name-sharer, I, too, was surprised by the mice learning their way around the maze. Until I remembered a conversation I had with an exterminator. He told me that the "instant death traps" he used would kill the mice immediately, and the reason he used them was that if the mice were to live for a while, they would automatically coat the trap with pheromons signaling distress, making the trap unattractive for future mice. I assume that the mice panicing in the individual dead ends infused the maze with basically road signs that would show routes to success, leaving smells of "food here", "no food anymore", and the smell of relief and panic. Therefore it may be less about memorizing but about leaving figurative bread crumbs.

Matt, use a UV light. Mice leave a urine trail so they will always find there way out of your maze. The mouse urine reflects light in the UV spectrum. Interesting fact, predator bird species, like falcons, can see in the UV range and see the trail from the air making mice easy prey.

Shrews cannot see as well as mice and rely on echolocation because they can’t hear well either. It’s possible that the shrew moved the seeds to have a better idea where the path ends. The seeds may have blocked its ability to locate the wall behind. Shrews are also smarter than mice.

This video got me reading a little about shrews. Apparently some shrews have powerful venom, and they are aggressively territorial. I THINK this shrew is one of them. This would explain why the mouse got nervous about the larger/tighter maze - if it happened to get caught in close quarters with the shrew, it would probably be killed.

rodents lay a trail of scent down on the path -- they follow that. that is how they find their way out of places; they just trace their own scent backwards. some shrews live in mazes underground right? plus they maybe have a better sense of smell. I think the advantage that the shrew has over the rodent is their sense of echolocation. they can find the openings a lot faster because of that. i think the mouse did not want to continue because they are so careful. he did not want to get stuck. he will use his whiskers to measure, and i think he decided that "nope, too tight. too dangerous." rodents are curious, but won't take uncalculated risks. shrews eat 2X their weight per day. shrew is going to try and get that food no matter what.
