Bigger and badder: The next gen Humvee

The U.S. military is seeking a supplement for the Humvee and the original Humvee's creator, AM General, has submitted the BRV-O for consideration.

The distance that the wheel can go up or down relative to the "normal" position. so if the wheel can go 35cm up and 35cm down.. it will have 70cm suspension travel.

You have to think about that the Humvee was built for logistical exercises behind your own frontline. It was not built for any tasks ON the frontline to win a war.

the humvee will ALWAYS be the most badass in peoples' hearts. you couldn't fit that other BIG OAF vehicle in a regular parking space, but the humvee you could...barely, but you could. the humvee was as big as you could get without overdoing it, and with that came insane ground clearance, suspension, and side slope! in the end tho, when you're talkin armor and stuff, the new vehicle has that v-hull and other goodies, so for war, it's better.

Pablo Jay i know what you mean, this vid is promoting a military vehicle for war. all i'm saying is that the hummer could be used for war and civilian use. it was only a little big for the streets, but could manage. this thing definitely couldn't be used for both and i know it's not meant for that, but i'm just saying, at least the hummer had both qualities. not every military vehicle has to be HUGE, ya know. the hummer was a good balance.

The problem with the humvee is its way too slow, super slow acceleration and very hard to steer with the armor on, so overseas they strip all the armor off to canvas doors and sandbags in the floorboards. When they could have a jeep that has basic armor on it, go much faster, more fuel economic, and way more maneuverable off road, and ALOT less expensive, So im gonna take the unpopular opinion and say that we should not be using humvees overseas, we should use a jeep j8, like Britain army and Egypt armies do. Im thinking some contractors made some mistakes in their oversights. Maybe they will fix that with the mrap, now thats a badass vehicle.

+Mac MashPotato It depends what kind of job you're doing, ambush risk areas you'd need good underfloor protection for IEDs, with a V-hull to deflect a lot of the blast energy sideways, and good side protection. For less urban areas you can have something a little less armoured and more capable of rough terrain while still being able to carry plenty of supplies. Us British have stuff like this Land Rover for utility, new Foxhound for more risky areas, Jackal for long range recon roles etc. The US are also going for this route with things like the Growler and experimenting with small ATVs for light and fast recon, with big MRAPs for more risky work.

    9 жыл бұрын

+MrBonami2 That is true, but US Army doctrine is normally to keep wheeled vehicles away from the frontline, it's only because of conflicts against insurgents that HMMWV and other wheeled vehicles were getting ambushed. Normally on the frontline you'd have the Bradley and Abrams, when against significant threats, slightly lower threats would be Stryker brigades, lower than that would then be light vehicles like the HMMWV. Luckily they're thinking about this problem and looking at a range of smaller vehicles to fill the small, agile recon role. Companies like Polaris have a range of ATV and larger light vehicles that could be perfect for the role. Unmanned vehicles are also a possible candidate, especially for logistics and also as lead vehicles of a convoy, the most likely to trigger an IED or landmine.

    9 жыл бұрын

+Puzzoozoo The British Army's Foxhound is apparently very well liked by the troops, similar concept to this adding a V-hull and better protection, our Land Rovers, though they've served well, are even worse than a HMMWV against IEDs and were well overdue for replacement, now we have the Jackal and Foxhound vehicles.

  • @Puzzoozoo

    @Puzzoozoo

    9 жыл бұрын

+Harry Akira Eaton Yes, our army's 50 + year old Land Rover Snatch was in dire need of replacement. The Fox Hound designers took a lot of inspiration from the Casspir when it came to mine protection, and design. But as I said the BRV-O has some serious competition out there, as even Russia produces a similar vechicle in the shape of the GAZ Tigr. Any foreign defence procurement minister looking for such a vechicle would have a hard job, as there are so many on the market, and all are as capable as the rest. It'd be an interesting job thou for such a big contract.

+Cameron McClease Which is why these new vehicles have V-hulls and lots of under armour protection, the problem with things like the HMMWV was the flat underside which meant the blast pushed up against the floor and into the soldiers sitting inside, with a V-hull the explosion is deflected to the side, which means less of the blast energy transfers through the seats and turns the soldiers insides into jelly. Modern seats also have a lot more shock protection too.

McSwethers Yes I'm aware how Google works, thanks. But if you haven't noticed, the only ones out there are a) pretty old which means they probably don't have much life left in them, and b) absurdly expensive because there are so few that actually get sold rather than scrapped.

samerickson89 Yeah you're right about them being too old and expensive. I just hope not too many are scrapped cause I would love to have one someday. But at least there are some out there.

I guess it wasn't really that obvious, but that's what I was getting at when I said I wish they'd sell ALL of them. I know they do a few here and there but the majority get scrapped. It's a travesty.

You don't serve a warrant with a blast proof truck you kick in the door. For that you need a bullet proof vest.

Kevlar wouldn't protect from explosions that much compared to straight up steel. Or maybe it would eventually tear, I haven't tested Kevlar before

They are trying to re-invent the armored personnel carrier, the military already has them why the new vehicles to do the same job? Need to go back to a utilty bases vehicle with no armor that can be carried by a helo or plane.

+DraCarmen Brizuela Because of warfare against insurgents, utility vehicles can no longer expect to be safe from ambush and IEDs, so V-hulls and better protection while maintaining good performance are key. The military are still looking at lighter utility vehicles that are air transportable too, like the lightweight ATV vehicles that the Marines are using and the Growler.
