BIGBURY ON SEA DEVON - The perfect Devon holiday destination

BIGBURY ON SEA DEVON | Bigbury-on-Sea, a picturesque village nestled on the South Devon coast, enchants visitors with its idyllic charm, stunning scenery, and a relaxed pace of life. The perfect tourist and holiday destination ready for the perfect Devon holiday.
Bigbury boasts two fantastic beaches, each catering to different desires. Bigbury Beach, with its vast expanse of golden sand gently shelving into the sea, is a haven for families. Calm waters create a safe environment for paddling and splashing, while excellent facilities like toilets, cafes, and shops ensure a comfortable day at the seaside. Build sandcastles and soak up the sunshine on this award-winning beach.
Burgh Island Beach, accessible by foot or tractor depending on the tide, offers a unique and dramatic setting. Explore the rock pools teeming with marine life, a natural aquarium waiting to be discovered. Witness the power of the tides as they transform the island into a temporary peninsula. Marvel at the iconic Burgh Island Hotel, a magnificent Art Deco landmark perched heroically on the tidal island.
Bigbury caters to the active holidaymaker as well. Whether you're a seasoned surfer seeking challenging waves at nearby Bantham Beach, a windsurfer harnessing the power of the wind, or a beginner looking for gentle paddleboarding lessons, Bigbury offers something for everyone.
Lace up your walking shoes and embark on an unforgettable journey along the South West Coast Path. This national trail winds along the dramatic coastline, offering breathtaking sea views and glimpses of quaint villages like Hope Cove with its traditional fishing cottages.
Hike to Start Point Lighthouse for panoramic vistas that encompass the entire coastline, or explore the surrounding South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a tapestry of rolling hills, hidden valleys, and charming villages.
Steeped in history and folklore, Burgh Island adds a touch of mystery to Bigbury. The Art Deco Burgh Island Hotel, accessible by foot or tractor depending on the tide, has been featured in films like Agatha Christie's "Poirot" and is a popular spot for afternoon tea with breathtaking ocean views or a romantic dinner under a starlit sky.
Bigbury offers a relaxed and safe environment for families. The beaches are perfect for building sandcastles and paddling. The village itself has a charming atmosphere with a handful of cafes, pubs, and shops catering to all needs. The Venus Cafe is a popular spot for lunch or ice cream with stunning beach views, and the local shops offer souvenirs and essentials for a perfect seaside escape.
If you're seeking a tranquil getaway, Bigbury-on-Sea is the perfect destination. Unlike some bustling seaside resorts, Bigbury offers a laid-back atmosphere where time seems to slow down. Relax on the beach with a good book, take a leisurely stroll along the coast path, or simply unwind and enjoy the serenity of the Devon countryside.
Burgh Island and Bigbury-on-Sea have captured the imagination of filmmakers, making appearances in a few productions:
Agatha Christie's Poirot: The iconic island hotel served as a filming location for several episodes of the popular detective series, adding to its mystique and intrigue. Imagine yourself following in the footsteps of Poirot as he unravels a complex mystery in this stunning setting.
The Shell Seekers: This 2006 film adaptation of the novel by Rosamunde Pilcher features scenes shot on Burgh Island and the surrounding area. The film's heartwarming story unfolds against the backdrop of Bigbury's natural beauty, showcasing its charm and tranquility.
Bigbury-on-Sea may not be a household name, but its undeniable charm, stunning scenery, and relaxed pace of life make it a captivating destination for a memorable holiday. Whether you seek adventure on the water, exploration on the coast path, or simply relaxation on the beach, Bigbury offers something for everyone. So, come discover this hidden gem on the South Devon coast and create your own unforgettable escape.

That looked very tiring walking around there in that heat. Beautiful view of the island 🏝️ and the ferry ⛴️ going across. A surfers paradise in Devon. 👍👍

Always! They’re trainers though not boots! They have special tread on them made out of the same material as sports car tyres as I was so many miles in them

Amazing ❤ Devon and Cornish beaches are the best, natural and rugged, so peaceful. This my local and favourite beach ! Been going since a child. So glad you saw the water tractor, it carries passengers to and from the Island when the tide is in. When tide is out, you can walk across, as the water recedes to the width of the Island, making the beach really big. When the tide comes in, it does so from both sides and meets in the middle.

Beautiful place. First visited in 1992. Burgh Island accesible by foot at low tide. Beautiful old pub called The Pilchard and the hotel of course. We sometimes stay at a lovely Parkdean holiday park in Challaborough just around the corner.

Never been there, but I’ve dreamt about staying at the hotel on Burgh Island for 20 years…..maybe some day. After watching Evil under the Sun from 2001, I felt in love with Burgh Island. I’m a big Agatha Christie fan, especially Poirot 😊

Used to holiday here as a family when I was a child. Stopped going in 2008 but I got myself back there a couple of weeks ago. Incredible to see it as an adult this time! How did you find the roads getting there however? Fun aren’t they? 🤣
