CLIP DESCRIPTION:
While Jack (Kurt Russell) and Wang (Dennis Dun) are caught in a gang war, three sorcerers arrive.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Playing in a manner that can be conservatively described as larger than life, Kurt Russell plays a macho truck driver who agrees to go to the San Francisco airport and pick up his friend's (Dennis Dun) fiancee (Suzee Pai, freshly arrived from China. Suddenly, a gang of Chinatown toughs kidnap the girl right before Russell's eyes. After a wild chase sequence, Russell discovers that the girl has been abducted by a genuine, bonafide sorceror (James Hong), the ghost of a 3000 year old warlord. And that's just for starters.

I remember walking 3 miles to the dollar movie theater to see this when I was 12, no one in the theater, and it felt like I had all that movie greatness to myself...it was euphoric. Loved BTILC so much I dragged my mom along with me to see it a second time. Classic flick.

This is unironically an amazing martial arts/ dark fantasy movie. The stuntwork and choreography is just insane, the villains and heroes are all entertaining and interesting, and the fact that everybody EXCEPT ol' Jack Burton knows what's going on just makes it all better!

The commentary track on this (and all of Carpenter’s collabs with Russell) is absolute gold. It’s just two best friends having a great time watching a movie. In this scene, when the storms flip to throw their kukri, Carpenter goes “and then they flip for some reason.” and Kurt Russell starts dying

What makes this a favorite is that we are lead up to this moment thinking of Jack Burton as the stereotype action hero when we realize he’s out of his element, wants nothing to do with Chinese mysticism, relatable to the regular guy, and while having a strong presence, doesn’t steal the show from the other characters. It’s a nicely crafted piece of cinema all in all.

@@adamsipione I understand your point and it's a good one, and I understand that it's a 4 year old comment, but sometimes it's ok if it's that simple. Joss Whedon did it in Avengers and in Astonishing X-men, where all it took was a simple clunk on the head to reverse mind control. First off, Lo Pan was not in his true form or full power. Second, it was a simple spell. Sometimes when someone is hysterical, not thinking right, or having an out of mind experience, all it takes is a slap. Dont think of it as muddy water on the floor in an alley curing an ancient spell. Think of it as a shock to the system snapping one out of a "fairy glamor". Fairy glamors are the lowest form of spell, an illusion and easy to break. It was only a bright light and Lo Pan was a spectre, so in a way we can say Lo Pan wasn't even real, nor the blinding light. All you need to do is not look at medusa for her magic not to work. Is it possible that was not a visually aggressive "make you blind" spell and was literally nothing more than just very bright light and all Jack needed was a moment to adjust his eyes?

Trivia for all the Mortal Kombat fans Raiden was based upon the lightning storm in Big Trouble In Little China. This movie is pure classic I was 4 when I first saw this and watched it almost every weekend for years I loved it so much along with the Goonies.

+Sega Sailor yeah I saw the making of Mortal Kombat. Cool little documentary. Raiden was based on the lightning storm in this movie, Kano was based on "Termanator", Lui Kang is based on Bruce Lee, Johnny cage is a Jean Claude Van Damme parody, Sonya was made as a needed female character, and they wanted an elemental factor in the game, two characters who are complete opposites of each other, fire and ice, hence Scorpion and Sub Zero. but on another note, this movie was a part of my childhood too. I wasn't born until 93 but this is one of my dad's all time favorites, along with predator and top gun. he's a pure 80's kid, and because of that I've seen those movies dozens of times, but hell I never got tired of them.

On a more positive note did anybody else enjoy the great directors commentary with Carpenter and Russel as much as I did? It's one of the better ones I've heard in a long time and they both deserve praise for making the effort to be on the DVD extras legitimately instead of just some gimmick or something else that is a waste. Anybody who enjoys the film should give a listen, it's beyond entertaining and interesting.

I may be the last horse to cross the finish line, but... I just realized how indicative the way in which they appear is of what element of a storm they are. Although it's cut from this clip, the first storm literally flies in (Wind. Also, he fills up with air at the end of the film and explodes.) The second one falls straight down like and with rainwater. And the last one descends from the sky with a bolt. So cool! Also, small side note: As a kid I always wondered what was going on @1:13 because the tape was a fullscreen version of the film and you couldn't see most of his hands.
