Big Train Tours - Denver Yards Workhorse: Union Pacific 0-6-0 No. 4455

Welcome to another Big Train Tour at the Colorado Railroad Museum! This month, we’ll be taking a look at a standard gauge locomotive built in 1920 for the Union Pacific Railroad. After spending its final 20-plus years operating in Wyoming, this railroad workhorse was donated to the Museum in 1972. Restored today to its pre-World War II appearance, and displayed at the Museum in Golden, Union Pacific steam switcher number 4455 is a Colorado classic.
Our subject today was one of nearly 200 similar steam locomotives built to switch freight and passenger cars around Union Pacific’s many yards and terminals systemwide. For over a decade, it was assigned to switching duties in Denver, including Denver Union Station. Then, it was sold off to a Wyoming cement-plant railroad, where it spent another two decades hauling trainloads of rock before coming to the Colorado Railroad Museum.
Join Executive Director, Paul Hammond as we explore the history of this seemingly unremarkable yet important locomotive.

It was facinating to learn that Denver Union Station had dual gauge track up into the 30s

I remember Fred Oster telling me about how as a young carman he went out to the cement plant by request of Bob Richardson to see if the engine could travel on its own wheels to Golden and he told Bob flatly NO

Indeed! Although, I think 4455 is static display only, and 4466 **was** a running locomotive, but (if I recall) 4466 was sidelined due to California's emissions standards of the year 2000 (4466 still ran on coal). 4466 might still be able to run (albeit after an inspection), however it is unlikely to run unless it gets converted to fuel-oil or some other "eco-friendly" fuel.

@@weylinwest9505 I really do hate the state of California. They are now banning vintage cars due to the chrome.

That is a brutally long service life for a single locomotive. Glad to see it survived into preservation.
