    I think Meier would be a fantastic addition however, I would like to see Dubas get some bottom six players who can score instead of breaking bank on a top-six player. I think you could get more value and spend a lot less getting 1 or 2 players for the 3rd and 4th lines.

    Definitely would like a guy like Meier. Love the physicality and goal scoring. He would also push for pp1 time or bolster pp2 A LOT. Also the fact he is an RFA, where you can flip him is a no brainer to me. Also idk if Knies would be on the team but I think Knies could learn a lot by practicing with him. McCabe, I do like the thought but seems like more of an off-season move to me. Replace Holl and have Timmins be your 7th d assuming Muzzin is still out.

    If the Leafs do trade for Meier, they won’t flip him. They would likely try to re-sign him long term and trade William Nylander to recoup assets in n the offseason. Meier is the type of player that the Leafs have been searching for to fit in the top 6.

    Hey Downtown, I really like your analytics and your in depth pros and cons of the possible trades. What is your opinion with how well the Jets are doing this year without Paul Maurice and how Dave Rittich is having an amazing season in Winnipeg? Also, comparing the future potential of the Canadian teams among them selves might be a real good episode for you especially since Matthews may be gone in two years! Which Canadian team will be on the top if Matthews doesn't resign with the Leafs?

  • @DownTownSports98

    @DownTownSports98

    Жыл бұрын

    When it comes to the Jets, they’ve definitely done a better job not allowing as many scoring chances this season. And when you make an elite goalies job easier, they’re going to take care of you. The roster had a lot of talent and winning cures all. So I think it’s been a combination of better team defence, Hellebuyck being elite, and winning that has helped their top end guys play to their strengths and get comfortable. They have several loud personalities in that locker room, maybe Bowness is just managing them a bit better. Maurice has usually been effective, but I don’t see him as a versatile coach when it comes to managing people. Maybe not as stubborn as Babcock, but for sure has his ideas and doesn’t venture far from them. Luke Schenn had a great quote on Boudreau and coaching the other day. So much of the job is just getting everyone to work together. I don’t typically venture outside of covering the Leafs because when I do, unfortunately the videos don’t do very well. If I had more time to build the audience, I would. But between TSN and these Leafs videos I’m capped out on about 50-60 hours a week on work plus watching the actual games. If I added anymore sports or teams to keep up with I think I would end up burning out. My goal has always been to eventually make this a full time gig. So maybe one day

    So I really think Dubas will be swinging this offseason. Does that mean bringing in a Meier or a Jake McCabe probably not. Dubas has been known to every single year look lower in the tiers and hope they can over succeed. They have always been known to try for more depth then anything. I dont think Dubas will stray to much from that. I believe the only untouchable will be Knies in the Prospects and that is the main reason they wont be able to aquire a guy like Meier. I believe a NJD will offer something like Sharangovich and a first PLUS and will be the team to land Meier. Im expecting Dubas to be busy. I wonder if he looks to move on from Matt Murray. It just came out Murray has been dealing with a nagging injury. For the second time already this season. They cant rely on him to stay healthy for a playoff run. Here is my thoughts. Could the leafs aquire in a trade Gavrikov+Korpisalo Gavrikov-2.8 , Korpisalo 1.3= 4.1M -------Murray 4.6M. Could the leafs put together a package to get COlumbus to take Murray in exchange for upgrading their D and getting a goalie who could possibly be a bit more healthy for a tandem. I realize Korpisalo hasnt been great the last few years but neither was Murray on a bad team. However I think a change of scenery could help him. DOing this also frees up another 500k. Could be Something like Gavrikov, Korpisalo Murray, 2nd , Prospect could possibly get some salary retained if give a first. may even need to give a first without rentention strictly becuse of the time remaining on murrays deal I think the Murray experiment has been a success when the guys been healthy but its been crystal clear , the guy is hurt more then hes healthy nit even the best of the best can keep this guy healthy. They NEED cinsistency if they want to succeed, they cannot rely on Samsonov solely to win them a cup. Theyre going to need a guy who can platoon with him.

    I can't see the leafs aquiring Meier in a trade. What Meier for Nylander? No way man. Nylander will score 40 this season and his game has improved . Nylander also seems to have the ability to score clutch. I would not like that move at all. The leafs probably will tweak bottom six abit. Maybe add some depth on d. No big massive deals. There's nobody really available I think that would be an x factor.

  • @mig3598
    @mig3598 Жыл бұрын

    The fact that Dubas hasn’t received an extension yet makes me a bit more hopeful that we could see him take some risk and acquire a Meier before trade deadline. I think a Meier type player is imperative. McCabe would be a nice additive. Meier type is imperative because we need to put pressure on our bottom 6 to produce, or at least have a productive 3rd line. Look at the makeup of Bruins bottom 6, multiple quality players with 20-30 pts. Meier would automatically slide Jarnkrok into that 3LW. Slide McMann to 4LW if you’d like and automatically that 3rd line as an energy forechecking line who can put up some points. Feel bad for Simmonds because he’s a standup guy but this isn’t the YMCA. I’d be fine with 4th line being a bruiser line of McMann/ZAR/Hunt. Trade pieces I would part with include any 1st, 2nd and beyond in the next couple seasons, Kerfoot, Robertson and Holl. Kerfoot because Jarnkrok is a better version of the same type of player (small, speedy). Robertson because he’s just not within this teams timeframe. Definitely want Holl traded while his stock is up because he’s wildly inconsistent and not a high pressure game player. I’ve said this many times about him, his peaks are pretty good/decent but his lows are abysmal and it often shows in the playoffs. Much happier with defensive depth however so D is not the first priority. You can mask a struggling Holl in the playoffs this year if need be.

    There are approximately 25 people on the Leafs staff who are involved in any player situations like trades. It is only Dubas who we hear from afterwards. So your theory on his contract does not hold water.

  • @mig3598

    @mig3598

    Жыл бұрын

    @@johnsummerhill8323 correct, Dubas has a team behind him to help with analysis, negotiation and scouting reports. We hear from Dubas because he is the executive for all the final decisions on management, not the staff who helps him. You could make the player management staff argument about practically any professional team sports. On that same note, if Dubas fails this year, he’s not the only one who will be leaving. But just to wrap up the point about Dubas’ incentives, an expiring contract (professional sports or not) will always have an impact on performance. If you don’t think an impending contract expiration in a few months is going to push Dubas over the edge to make a significant trade in what might be his last attempt with this core, I don’t know what to tell you.

  • @johnsummerhill8323

    @johnsummerhill8323

    Жыл бұрын

    @@mig3598 I can tell you because I know the situation, nothing happens without Shanahan's approval.Of course, they could be butting heads on an issue, but the fact that the Leafs have worked themselves to be the 3rd or 4th best team in the NHL, is going to make it difficult not to extend Dubas' contract.And the chance of Shanahan getting fired is next to impossible due to the financial position the Leafs have reached in the last 5 years.

  • @mig3598

    @mig3598

    Жыл бұрын

    @@johnsummerhill8323 that’s true, shanahan definitely has the final say. I find it hard to believe that Shanahan wouldn’t approve or see the utility in a trade for a power forward considering the kind of player he was. Anyway, the context of my comment is riding on the fact that the Leafs haven’t done anything in the playoffs yet. Maybe it’s just a matter of breaking past that wall but saying a contract extension is likely given that they’ve been a top regular season team, as they’ve been for the past few seasons, isn’t going to cut it in the Toronto market if they don’t make a run this playoffs.

  • @johnsummerhill8323

    @johnsummerhill8323

    @@mig3598 The real issue is that the Leafs really have not the cap space ($1.9 million) to do a lot without a fairly significant movement of current roster players. If we can improve off Kerfot and Holl that's the move. Muzzin on IR plus trading Kerfot and Holl that's 10mil in cap space at the deadline, add in salary retention and I feel the options are endless. My perfect deadline haul, a top 6 fwd who can score, shut down centre who kills penalties and a noticeable improvement off Holl. Trading Kerfot and Holl changes the pk. if we could sign Meier for 8 years at 8 mil per i'd consider keeping him and maybe trading Nylander to the Islanders for Dobson who currently has only 2 goals less than the entire Leafs D because i think Willy might want more than that Meier 50% retained for Hirvonen,Voit,Robertson and 1st round picks for 2024 and 2025...then send Nylander,Kerfoot and Niemela to Isles for Dobson & Beauvillier....bring Holmberg back up to play center or see what the cost is for either Domi from Hawks or McBain from Yotes

    Meier already has a long term contract. But it is not going to fit into the Leafs cap situation. If Meier gets traded, look at him going to a team with cap space, maybe Buffalo.

    Either they go all the way this year or it's over more or less because Auston won't resign, neither will Nylander. Leafs cannot afford to keep them. So if they do trade, better trade for long term and not just for a run at the cup.
