Big Toe Mobility Exercises (Hallux Limitus)

Today's video covers mobility exercises for the big toe and a condition called hallux limitus. Hallux limitus describes a condition in which mobility of the big toe joint (metatarsophalangeal joint) is lost resulting in pain and impaired function. Over time, pain and arthritis can develop in the joint and mobility can become more severely compromised, eventually resulting in a rigid toe joint (hallux rigidus).
Problems typically arise when big toe dorsiflexion is limited (60 degrees is normal), which leads to abnormal foot mechanics during functional tasks, including the gait cycle. As time goes on, individuals with limited toe range of motion may be more prone to developing pain and/or various orthopedic foot conditioning, including bunions

    My big toe mobility is fine when I’m not standing, but when baring my own weight, it becomes rigid and limited. Have you any advice for what I should do? Thank you

    Yes, my feet are the most painful part of my body. All shoes hurt me. I have tried toe alignments, copper arch shoe inserts, etc. They are not strong or stable (my feet). I will try these tips. I am on my feet all day. Have you heard of barefoot shoes? Do you think that would be better than something like Skechers or shoes that support your feet?😢

    I do know of barefoot shoes and they can help some people. Each person varies, so it’s best to experiment with different shoes until you find what works best for your situation and symptoms.
