2:25 The way those guitar riffs start depicting ambulance sirens as Adrianne reaches the climax of the car accident is one of the most poetic, subtextual bits i've ever heard in a song. Close second is the spacey synths in UFOF.

The way the meaning of the chorus shifts from beginning to end kills me. Beautiful song 💔

this is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard

I instantly thought of Bruce Springsteen when I heard the haunting way Adrienne Lenker sings this song. Then did some research and read that the band was listening to Nebraska during the recording of Capacity. Adrienne confirmed that Springsteen was indeed a huge influence for Shark Smile.

All great songs possess a sense of urgency, as if the story cannot not be said. This is one f them.

Years later and I still love this song every-bit each and every time I hear it. Adrianne Lenker ... my goodness, I can’t put my finger on it but her voice and her unusual, casual style effortlessly heaves layers of emotion.

You lost me at comparing them to Mazzy Star. They sound nothing alike and I'm glad cause BG is by far a much better band, and Adrianne is a great singer.

That solo gives me shivers in my stomach ❤

There's something about how great songs, songs that you just LOVE, you don't pick them, they pick you. That is this song, it never gets old and I want to restart it as soon as it's over.

I remember when Mythological Beauty was released as a single, I was suuper excited about the new record, but I thought "This song is great, but I know something better is approaching". THEN they released this masterpiece (no, not THAT masterpiece.. That's a great track/record too), and I thought "Here it is. Before they even release the rest of the record, I know now that there's no way I could like any other song more than this." Still holds true. Great track from a fantastic record.

Woah I grew up in Minnesota and this song brought me right there before I knew what it was about. Y’all know that Midwest winter deep feels

Another one came to mind, Alone Again by Gilbert O’Sullivan, depressing lyrics, happy melody.

Too bad they don't write more songs like this. So far it's the only song I like from them, and it's a great song.

Goosebumps and relaxation in one go… this one makes me smile every time it comes along (on several selfmade lists)

j m I’m assuming Iowa, because they’re signed to Saddle Creek, which is in Nebraska, right next to Iowa. They play Omaha a lot, so maybe they were driving through Des Moines toward Omaha when this was written. This is just speculation

Every time that I've heard a live recording of this he's cold diarrhea in a warm dixie cup and his vocals always match up in the same way. He can never recreate the studio crumbly alt-country solo that he somehow laid down on the track and he's, very apparently, the least talented of the group by a very large margin
