I have had this conversation with a mechanic friend mine about balance of torque through the drive train. His reply was I am the ace certified mechanical genius. A week or two later he would be under his mechanical concoction replacing broken and bent parts. Not applying math first is a pain in the wallet. Torque will break things much faster than HP. He got real good at taking things apart and replacing them. Push rods, valves , clutches and internal auto trans parts. He was also real good at breaking manual transmissions. He never got good at fixing them. When they break not as easy to fix as a automatic. But I know how to fix a network operating system. Had to learn a bit of math to get there.

His casual ease and speed reflect decades of experience and knowledge. I chuckled because of how he is able to basically dump entire handfuls of parts onto the bench without caring, since he knows exactly where every tiny piece goes. Whereas I almost gripped the table with anxiety when he dumped a drum out and all these springs and things just spilled out onto the table - I was thinking, "Oh God, NOOOOO!" =)

It's amazing to me how he considers some serious wear/damage as totally OK and not needing replacement (such as the large hub at 14:10) yet some tiny nearly imperceptible wear on the pump (earlier in the video) needs parts replacement. It's a sign of a solid honest mechanic with tons of experience. Also, (generally!) guys with embroidered names on their shirts are pretty good!

Yeah i had an old german mercedes tech who taught me some of my biggest lessons. He taught me not to look at it as brand specific parts but understand each individual components purpose and function and you can use them to do what you want. 4 example running a 2005 honda accord v6 on GM 1980s hei ignition modules. Sounds crazy? But works cause if u understamd what the modules do u can use them to do what the honda needs. Really went a long way to removing the fear of "exotic" & german cars. I knew how it all worked and why so no problems. Except old VWs and german wiring diagrams they still mess me up haha
I love watching you tear these transmissions down, that is an amazing skillset you have!

Even with that said, you will still come out on top because guys like me who run across these videos are going to go out of our way to give you our business simply because you are paying it forward. Good people take care of good people. On the other hand, guys who would have done it themselves anyway are going to greatly appreciate your knowledge and I can just imagine how time time and money you saved them. This guy mechanical aptitude is in whole other level, his understanding and troubleshooting to the exact failed components and what caused it. Years and years of practice and learning.. His shaky hands though, maybe it comes from years of using impact driver? Anyway, it's a pleasure watching a pro at work
Very impressive knowledge of transmissions.
its videos like this that have given me the confidence to have opened a bmw transmission down to the drums and clutches to repair the input bushing. What a wild ride that was. Long story short car ran great after but so freaking tedious.
Brilliant video, this man has more than PHD , he has 40 yrs of life experience in building and rebuilding transmissions and that only comes with time and if i lived near you folks, sound like your from Texas i would simply send you my transmission to rebuild , it will only be done one way the right way and i could put it back in my car and get another 200,000+ miles out of it, Hell by then they'd probably take my license away ,LOL, I truly hope all is well with you and yours and continue this amazing work and would not be surprised if you had a waiting list to get trans work done, Your family name is Critch, had a good friend with the same Sir name and was one of the best people you could meet , just like you folks , fantastic video 👍

*I want this man or another Pro transmission builder like him to build my transmission. Meanwhile my wife's transmission on her 06 denali just went bad so I'm searching for a reasonably priced builder on offerup and craigslist right now but all of the so called builders on there are young guys who don't seem to even had enough time to truly master trans building. All of the True Pro Transmission builders are older gentlemen like the man on this vid, straight fact.*

When people talk about all that they're supposedly going to do to their car, they usually use phrases like "Turbo, supercharger, bored-out cylinders, etc". And all I can think is: "Yeah, but what kind of transmission work are you going to do?" The transmission is a very fundamental and expensive part that everybody seems to forget. Without a good transmission, your engine and all of its mods is useless.
