Big Shows vs Small Shows

Музыка

"Big shows" are a contentious topic in the metal scene. Are they really as soulless and lacking in intimacy like some people claim they are???

Best shows are the ones where the band puts on some good effects, but you can still show up half an hour early and get in the front. I'm short and can't see anything at big shows as a result

I was lucky enough to see Carcass in a very small venue a few months back. It was a real pleasure to see Carcass upfront and personal on a small stage. If you're wondering where the venue was it was The Cluny in Newcastle England.

One of my recent highlights was a multi-day festival where I was able to see bands like Gojira and In Flames on a huge outside stage with a massive circle pit. On the other hand, at the same event my friend's death metal band performed on a tiny indoor stage. Both experiences were extremely different, yet equally awesome.

I just went to my first really big show, RHCP, and although I had a blast, I pretty much couldn’t tell what was going on on the stage, besides what was on the monitors. Contrary to that, I’ve also gone to a living room concert this year, >50 people, got to chat with the guy!

For me, I will say that I prefer small shows, but mainly in the sense that I prefer smaller venues, I personally just find myself enjoying a show more when I'm almost being pushed on stage by the moshpit watching my favorite band in front row, than standing in front of a fence with a bunch of security guards and something that ruins those shows for me, are the photographers. There's being a professional photographer, and then there's overdoing it, some guys will almost block your view with their cameras for 30 minutes at a time. At the Cannibal Corpse show, the security had to tell off the photographers and even when they did they almost refused to move despite being told so. So for me, I'll use the Incantation show I just went to last week. It was a pretty small bar venue in Stockholm, but the energy between the crowd and the performers given that the opening band has a singer who likes to go into the crowd during verses and half the time he wasn't even on the stage, the band in question who was opening for Incantation is Crawl, the Swedish one, I've seen them play a local show in my city one time and this was my second time seeing them live. Right before they started playing I made sure to chat up the guitarist since the band ran their own merch table, bought a t-shirt and showed my excitement for the show, after they played I made a personal deal with the singer of the band to purchase the very last 7 inch vinyl they had, and I don't regret a single moment of that. Then Incantation showed me that one of the bands I look up to the most, has some of the nicest people I've had the pleasure of watching perform, I caught a guitar pick from John Mcntee and that cemented this show in history as something I will use to compare other shows to, because simply for me, this was the best experience I've ever had at a show, and a big part of it was in fact the interaction with the bands, it felt more like Metal brothers coming together to have a good time than just fans coming to watch the show, because everyone was very very kind to each other and I guess part of that is good luck with the crowd being good people. All this being said though, if I ever got the chance to see Iron Maiden, I wouldn't hesitate, because although I do prefer a smaller more close quarters venue, it's not something that means a big show can't be good.

I prefer smaller shows way more. I'm in a regional hardcore scene, and it's awesome to recognize most the people there. It's a social event as well as a musical one. We get to talk before, mosh during, meet bands after. Turnaround happens to be way faster. Then they're also just way cheaper so I can go to more as a broke guy. On a sensory level, I just find them less intimidating...even if I end up with a ton of bruises or have to dodge kicks and punches, it's pretty easy to leave the venue if I get overwhelmed from sensory stimuli. There's not bright lights usually, which is something that can get on my nerves w/ autism. Not about seeming cool That being said, theres a few bands I will tough out arena venues for

I love this smaller hard rock band called Artifas, and when I last saw them at lovedrafts in PA, i was jamming out so hard that they let me scream into the mic for one of the parts! There was barely 50 people there (at most) but it was such a blast. It was my second time seeing them and there was even less of a turnout then the first time. They recognized me, gave me a free pin and two picks. And then when I saw Maiden in Bristow back in 2019… holy crap!! Despite having lawn seats the sound was amazing and the gigantic plane for aces high was nothing short of magical!! Shows big and small can be some of the most fun on the planet needless to say! Oh there was also the time my father opted to instead of taking me he took my mom(who wasn't into metal. She liked Fleetwood Mac and Rick Springfield)to see Judas Priest, Megadeth, and Testament. This was a special show to thank Reno, NV for the support during the trial. MY DAD TOOK MY MOM INSTEAD OF ME TO THIS SHOW. They came home early because my mother had a headache. funny timing. i went to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Vienna just 3 days ago (primarily because of Iggy Pop opening, Idles played 2 days earlier and well I like John Frusciante). anyway, not my favorite show. most expensive tickets I ever paid for and I was on some tribune, couldn't buy a standing ticket in the back. i guess, the show was good, but i was put off by the distance and fence. Judas Priest when they did a show in one of our local biggest stadiums was better, cause I could atleast get very far into the non-VIP area, so the experience was still fully there, but I like the mid-sized local venues most, which get good established bands and where it still only takes you 2 minutes to get to the bathroom or order beer.

Not really into the small 10 person kinda show but not into a stadium either. I like my shows to be Word of Mouth, if your in the in crowed you'll know where its at kinda shows. Mainly keggers in a basement or backyard with every crusty punk and grindcore dready motherfucker in town piled into one vacant lot or something. Detroit, Chicago, and So-Cal have great shows like this. You can search Haggus play live and see what their shows are like to see what I am talking about.

The most intimate show I ever went to was a D.O.A. show at a local diner. The stage was only big enough for the drummer, and this wasn't D.O.A. in the 80s, this was the mid 2010s, also I accidently got bumped in the head by Joe Shithead's headstock which gives you an idea of how intimate this show really was. Also got to meet him and he signed my let's wreck the party CD booklet.

My first two concert experiences were a week apart in 2003. I had pit tickets at Veterans Stadium for Metallica and the Summer Sanitarium tour and then I saw Type O Negative at the Trocadero on the Life is Killing Me tour. Both were great shows though this was right when Metallica released St. Anger and the festival style of that tour led to slightly shorter headlining spot. And seeing Mudvayne and Deftones was awesome as well though seeing Limp Bizkit after the band ran from Fred Durst and Linkin Park which I’m just not a fan of was blah. Certainly a decent first concert experience since I wasn’t too far away from the stage. However seeing Type O Negative in Philadelphia where they have put on some legendary shows over the years is the perfect example of why someone would prefer a smaller venue. My introduction to their live prowess was a set list that started with “Unsuccessfully Coping With the Natural Beauty of Infidelity” while getting gloriously tossed around in the pit. Metallica isn’t competing with that and they were a huge influence on me as a musician. Another time I went to the Troc for a Type O show Josh was out front of the building smoking a cigarette chatting with the fans waiting to get inside while Slitzy was roaming the street. Couple that with the time my band got to play a local show at the Troc and I have a bias towards small venues. Not to mention I also seen Ministry there as well after Houses of the Mole’ came out. Up against the barricade with my band mates getting spotted by Uncle Al while singing along to the new stuff got Al excited and he was coming over towards us making goofy faces and rocking out. Larger venues are great too like when I seen Maiden at Ozzfest though I can’t imagine what an Iron Maiden show in a small venue would even look like after all their success. But there is something magical when you’re at a small venue seeing one of your favorite bands and everything clicks for the band that night. However that won’t mean I won’t discriminate or think it isn’t possible for that magic to happen on the big stage. Metallica in Moscow many years back must’ve been an amazing show and that was as big of a show a band could have as well as Nine Inch Nails at Woodstock 94. Basically if you’re lucky enough to see a band in their prime or the atmosphere is just magical that night it doesn’t matter what the venue is.

Didn't pay more than $40 and usually around $30 to see all the big Metal acts and festivals during the 80s-90s.Feel sorry for you young people today and the sooner this grubby economy collapses the better.Go support your local shows and catch bands on their ascendancy and get the kudos for being there before they hit it big rather than feeding dinosaurs.

Or you can just stay home and listen to everything for the price of your monthey internet and spotify bill. Not have to suffer the horrors of getting to and from shows let alone the miserable experience of the show itself. And you could also just not buy or wear merch. But maybe that's just me.

Small shows is full of troublemakers. I saw ashes of ares for the first time and while they were playing this my hell some drunk bitches upstairs fell her beer glass on my dad's head slided but it landed exactly on the table and knocked our empty beer bottles which every time you order third bottle of beer its always warm. The first two shots were ice cold as hell is like we they brought it from Antarctica and the third from the Sahara deserts 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. And the speakers are awful because they have only two one the left and the right instead multiple just like in huge screen cinemas

First off, love the background music you got from your album lol. And I agree with you at 8:12 you mentioned how it's still the same band just different setting. People feel that just because your at a small venue doesn't mean the band is gonna sound like shit or it's not gonna be fun because it's a small venue. It's the same band. Trust me, if your coming and paying to see them they are gonna give you one heck of a show. They aren't justin beiber who coughs and decides to cancel a whole show and no refunds next time sorry kinda shit. I feel like whether your going to a big or small venue the band will still perform and interact with the audience because that's what these bands do. If you like them that much then you'll ignore the crowd size and the venue size and just enjoy it ya know?

Absolutely. That said, I like the idea of festivals and seeing a lot of bands the same day. But the performances tend to be rushed I think
