The Haunting of Hill House isn't about five siblings, it's about a paranormal research investigation. I also wouldn't call it gothic, it tends to be credited for creating the "modern" horror tale that bridges some gothic tropes with new ideas.

Isabel Allende is a beautiful writer but her books have become quite formulaic over the years, following a similar pattern. So I recommend either reading her older, most famous books, or really picking and choosing the ones you want to read right away as later you might get tired of her when you realize all her books are the same plot but just different setting. I love her writing so much, I just wish she would branch out some.

I've definitely found that too, I've read several books by her, some of which I've loved and some that were not so great. I agree though, her writing is so good, so I totally get what you mean :D Maybe she'll branch out in the future

I'm a history buff and the second war is a field I'm well read in. If my grandparents had a little part in the war I'd read everything I could. The strength and determination of those who fought is amazing. I always wonder if I could have been brave enough to do anything at all. My father was part of the US armed forces who landed at Omaha beach. I have great respect those who lived and fought thru the war. Honoring those hero's from our past is important. I hope you learn of your country's history and can pass on something you learn to your Grandfather. Enjoy

Exactly!! I always wonder the same thing, like I don't know how people lived through it, let alone actually do anything other than cower in a corner somewhere. I told my grandpa I'd gotten those books, and I definitely need to read them, because he wants full updates with what I've learnt xD

What a great collection of books, Alice! My reading theme for October is books with Halloween words in the title, so a few of the titles you mentioned (eg, The Haunting of Ashburn House, A Secret History of Witches…) are right on point! The books I’m planning to read don’t actually have to be Halloween related or scary - for example, A Ghost in the Throat or Ghosted by Jenn Ashworth - while others are, like The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Vampires or Halloween Party by Agatha Christie. The Haunting of Hill House is on my list for this month, too. There are just so many great books with on-point titles! And yes, I know exactly what you mean about having so many good books and wanting to read them all at the same time!!! Belated birthday wishes and hoping that you enjoy all of your new reads!

Giambattista Piranesi was an artist in the 18th century that did sort of fantastical etchings of Classical Rome and also imaginary prisons that are complex and labyrinthine. I haven't read the book yet, it's on the list, but I wonder how much the artist, or at least his work is reflected in the book. I don't think that it's inspired by his life, but it almost sounds like it takes place inside one of his works. Also I'm an art historian, so I'm very excited to see that you're getting started in a journey towards learning more about my favorite subject!

The Chatham School Affair has an academic setting. It's not my favorite Thomas H. Cook (The Crime of Julian Wells, or The Quest for Anna Klein, or maybe The Interrogation) but it was the first I read and good enough to make me read the rest of them. They're spooky.

I would highly recommend the book What are you looking at? By Will Gompertz if you are starting out with learning about different art periods and artists - I’ve found it so informative and interesting and helps to put the timeline of different art styles together perfectly. It focuses on ‘modern art’ mainly so the last 150 years x

Dead Poet's Society is brilliant, I love both the book and the film. The Headmaster's Wife and Curse of the Spectre Queen seems up my street, I'll have to check them out on Goodreads. You've also inspired me to buy a few art books, so I got the same series as you, but I bought Goya and Bruegel. I've always been interested in reading about The Second World War, probably because I went to an elementary school that was bombed by the British in 1944 (it was rebuilt after the war). We had a memorial every 4th of October, and I was there for the 50th anniversary of the bombing, in 1994. Because Britain was our ally, the event was hushed up, and the survivors got no compensation or recognition for their trauma from the government until 2012. It's such a disturbing piece of our country's history.
