Big river carp: A brace of 40lb+ common and a 45lb mirror on a French river

I recently joined my good friends Mark and Wayne for three days on the bank of the river Mayenne. They were camped up in their favourite swim and I was keen to explore that section of the river with them. I had a few rod hours but this was more of a social for me. Still, I had my camera at hand! And a good thing it was as I witnessed and captured some very rare scenes on the river: Wayne caught an incredible string of 3 big river carp over 40lbs: two commons of 41lbs 8oz and 40lbs and a 45lb mirror. One 40lb river carp is exceptionally rare, let alone three! Mark did very well too and caught carp to 30lbs (a rare size for the river). It was fascinating to see their approach and tactics. They used Wayne’s brand new Raptor boat to bait up heavily throughout the session. The boat was also essential to chase and net the fish safely. Sharp hooks and simple yet robust rigs did the rest. Well done guys, it was a pleasure to see your work.

Hi Antony, no mate. No knowledge I'm afraid. I'd look for swims near the locks as these are good holding areas for carp. In order to achieve any success, baiting over a number of days is usually essential. Good luck in your search, Matt.

Hi mate, I’m afraid I haven’t fished these rivers at all. You can usually find information on the website of the department. I’ve had a quick look for you and unfortunately, there’s not a lot of useful info and it’s all in French. Here’s what I got on the Maine: www.fedepeche49.fr/guide-du-pecheur/parcours-de-peche/rivieres/maine/. You need to find someone more local that can talk to you about day vs night sectors, fish reserves etc. You’d need a fishing licence as well which you can get online easily. Good luck with it mate.

Hi Tony, thanks for commenting and glad you liked the video! Wayne was using a brand new boat from Raptor www.raptorboats.nl/?lang=en It was being powered by an old 30lb thrust Minn Kota engine: www.minnkotamotors.com/ Wayne's a very talented angler and has been hunting down big carp across France for many years (it's why I wanted to spend a few days on the bank with him to see how he does it!). Cheers, Matt.

Matthew Collins Thank you obviously top bloke as river carping is a whole different ball game. I can remember catching a 20lb common carp out of Thrumpton Weir on the river Trent what a nightmare took nearly 30 minutes to land and fought like a demon. I also had a 26lb Pike whilst livebaiting out of the same weir and that gave a good account of itself but nothing compared to that carp. Iv just subbed as I really like this channel. All the best. Tony

I come public water fishing in France twice a year back in September, have the Mayenne on my waters to fish list , I am right that you are casting upstream , it’s not a tactic I’ve used , is it an access thing or a specific tactic . ? Great video
