Matthew Collins

Hi, I’m Matt, fishery manager, engineer and passionate carp angler. This channel is about helping you catch carp with in-depth tutorials.

I’ve been carp fishing since I was a boy. In 2011, I bought my own lake in France, Beausoleil Carp and Cats. It’s a 4 acre estate lake and half of the stock has been fished for for 20 years, so our carp are very good at spitting rigs! Over the years, the lake has helped me improve my skills and create some of my own tricks to fool a wily carp.

Between my own fishing, my experience as a fishery manager and meeting hundreds of anglers, I have continued to learn about our craft and about all those details that can transform a session.

As well as the free videos on this channel, I offer one-on-one tuition by video call. I also run tutorial sessions for guests visiting the lake where I share all my tips that not only work wonders at Beausoleil but will make you an even better angler wherever you fish.

Get in touch if you want to know more 😊

Clearly, you don't feel that the carp can see the hook link?

    I've been using Shimano Bait runners for donkeys years and infact I've just treated myself to another set of St RB 10000s. I've had absolutely no problem with 'Bumping off'. Maybe your reel has a problem with the free runner tension because mine can lock right up with just half a turn of the bait runner knob.

    Hi Mathew, I’m a little confused about whether to use a small loop covered with anti tangle sleeve or just a large loop to double over a large ring swivel. Korda currently pushing Sleeves a lot for pushing bait out and resetting, which I get. But is there pros and cons for both. I’d have thought a ring swivel like mine gives the bait a lot more movement if the fish comes from behind. Also on the cast is one better for anti tangle than the other

  • @matthewcollinsangler

    Hi mate, for me it very much depends on the choice of hooklink material I’m using. If for example I needed to use a nice supple material like 25lbs Armourlink then I’d make a large loop at the end (just using a simple overhand knot) and then loop to loop that to a ring swivel. It’s an absolute myth that the rig has to kick away from the bait to be effective. Anglers have been dropping supple braid rigs from boats onto spots for years at my lake here and caught countless carp doing so. Watch this video for a great example of this rig: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aYqgz7CBl5OodJM.htmlsi=n8AGVcKDjPO60ZnH If I’m casting and I needed to use a semi stiff hooklink like 30lbs (0.50) heavy duty mono snag leader, then I’d opt for a quick change swivel with a short tungsten anti tangle sleeve pushed over the loop to hold it in place. I’m not using or relying on the anti tangle tube to kick the bait away. This is achieved by the semi stiff hooklink. Of course you can use this type of rig from a boat as well but you have to love rig tying because you are going to be doing a lot of it. I don’t worry at all about the way in which the carp approach the rig from. If the hook is sharp enough then you stand an excellent chance of a run. Hope that helps, cheers, Matt.

    What was the knot you came to? The backing? Why do people use backing when you can just use a full spool of the line you like to use? Thanks.

  • @matthewcollinsangler
    @matthewcollinsangler2 күн бұрын

    Hi, the knot I came to was a back to back 5 turn uni knot. I use backing line because it’s cost efficient. I might change my fishing line 3 times a year and by using backing I can make a 1000m split between three spools. My spools hold 500m+ of line so I’d need to buy 2000m every time I re-spool. If you’ve only got small spools then you might not need backing.

    Hi Richard, in this video I was just using my mainline as a hooklink. Back then it would have been Big Game or maybe ESP Syncro. If all you want to do is to tie a basic little D-rig like this then just use whatever mainline you have and see how that goes for you. Most mainlines make great hooklink material. If you are looking for a more robust or very anti tangle D-rig then you need to watch this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hKZo0sOOZaXFopc.htmlsi=9yZYdXWtY3rvnB61 Cheers, Matt.

    Virtually no-one float fishes for carp here. I only know two anglers in 13 years that have done it and been successful. I used to love float fishing for carp (it’s how I started!) but it’s not something I've done for years. The last time I float fished at the lake was for roach. Great fun too.

    When using this rig I understand using putty to pin everything down to the bottom when using a swivel running rig.when using it in a solid Pva bag do you bother putting any putty on it?

  • @matthewcollinsangler
    @matthewcollinsangler3 күн бұрын

    Hi mate, TBH nowadays I don’t use putty as I much prefer tungsten sinkers. I use a boilie needle to move them between rigs as they are much cleaner than putty which makes such a mess. If you are using solid PVA bags then I don’t think you need anything as long as the braid sinks and is supple. I use Armourlink 25lbs for my solid bag work 👍

    I use both when feeding, and I check whether they eat it, so I can adjust the quantity I put in based on whether they're feeding or not, otherwise, you're right, there's a real risk of having pellets rotting on the lakebed which is not good for water quality.

    presumably slack lines when using running rigs?

  • @matthewcollinsangler
    @matthewcollinsangler3 күн бұрын

    Not necessarily. You can fish running rigs with a tight line, slack line or semi slack, or back leads. What’s important is that you have a very solid bankside setup and fish a semi tight clutch. With a running rig, I’m not creating the bolt effect with the lead but I am creating a much bigger bolt effect with my clutch ie it’s the clutch that’s doing the hooking of the carp.

    Dear Matt. I know you know what I'm about to tell you but, in winter the feeding period is often just a few hours, or not at all. I fished for some very big roach a lifetime ago, and they would often only feed for an hour a day if conditions were difficult. But when the temp and light values got to their liking they would often feed for several hours. Wonderful videos and so interesting to boot.

    I.ve learned so much from you, cant thank you enough, sir! Had a day ticket today and put 3 carp just under 15lb on the mat along with maybe 15 more fish around 6-7lb mark (aparently the biggest fish in the lake is 24lb or so, so im quite proud of myself). Tied up some rigs like you did in a recent video and im sold, thats my go-to from now on, thank you! However, as someone slowly transitioning from coarse fishing towards the speci..I would like to know more about how you go about prepping your baits. Do you use the same boilies for the feed as well as hookbaits (maybe just flavoured differently?). Im just a bit confused as I didnt really see ' bottom hook boilies' at my local tackle shop..just wafters and pop ups..which im slowly getting tired of😬 thanks!

  • @matthewcollinsangler
    @matthewcollinsangler3 күн бұрын

    Hi mate, glad you’ve been able to use some of my tips and congrats on your recent successes 👏. There’s no need to make carp fishing any more complicated than it needs to be. I just use a good quality boilie for both jobs, feed and hookbait. Scopex Squid has caught me hundreds of carp over the years and that’s pretty much all I use. With a high quality food bait like this you don’t need to use it in large volumes unless you are fishing in flowing water. To keep costs down, make up some PVA stringers for whole baits or crush it down to make a crumb stick. I also like to dip it in some Scopex Squid spod syrup for extra attraction but it’s optional because the carp love the bait as is. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

    Spending the last 30yrs sea fishing both beach and boat now dipping my toe into a bit of carp fishing, whats the purpose of the long length of rig tubing?

  • @matthewcollinsangler
    @matthewcollinsangler3 күн бұрын

    Hi mate, wow yes it’s very different from sea fishing. Rig tubing does a number of jobs. It protects the last 1m of mainline from damage (rocks/stone etc. ) which can weaken the line and cause a premature failure. It also protects the carp's flanks during the fight. Bare mainline can lift or even slice off scales or leave marks on their flanks. Tungsten tubing also adds weight to the last 1m to help it sink. This helps to conceal the end tackle from the carp. Rig tubing is also known as anti tangle tubing but for me this is a misnomer. A poorly designed rig or a rig used in the wrong situation will tangle with or without anti tangle tubing. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

    With regard to not pushing the tail rubber in too far, this may prove problematic when fishing at range as the thump of the cast and the hit of the line clip will both drive the tail rubber in further. Great for up to 50 yards or so, not sure if the lead will release as easy if cast at distance.

  • @matthewcollinsangler

    You are absolutely correct and that is why I began using the Nash inline lead inserts for this setup as the 90° shoulder prevents the insert being drawn into the lead and changing the delicate fit that I’m looking to achieve.

  • @matthewcollinsangler

    Yes, absolutely. Carp of any size can use the weight of the lead to throw the hook out. Don’t confuse a hook pull with the carp getting away with it before you even pick up the rod. For me they are two separate scenarios.

    At my local club water most anglers seem to be using small baits (10-15mm). So, to be different I am using 18-20mm baits. (may go larger when I next re-order). Back in the early 70's we used baits larger that golf balls and still caught. In fact last week I caught an 8lbm Tench on a double 20mm. I also have a theory that carp find the larger baits more difficult to deal with !!

    Hi mate, I’ve not tested the OMC system but it’s a copycat of the Fox Tadpole system. I’ve tested the Fox system and I'm not a fan because the sleeve does not fit snugly onto the swivel and on the take the sleeve just slides up the line with the lead which is absolutely not what I want to happen. All I can tell you for sure is that this arrangement worked well for me in testing and did exactly what I wanted it to do 👌
