Big Red Truck Lyrics by John Riggins
Back when he was a youngin'
He always dreamed of becoming
A Man people would turn to.
He was always runnin'
To help his family and others.
He would come to their rescue.
Here it comes down the road.
The sirens scream through town.
Red lights flashing all aglow.
Everyone knows that sound -
The sound of help on the way.
that truck seemed so high off the ground.
He looked up at Mom and said,
"I wanna ride the Big Red Truck someday."
He's on shift with his brothers
Away from his family and others.
The days have turned into years.
Wouldn't trade it for nothin'
His world was sometimes numbing
tending the people's pain and fears.
Here it comes down the road.
The sirens scream through town.
Red lights flashing all aglow.
Everyone knows that sound -
The sound of help on the way.
He gets that rush when the bell sounds.
With hard work and luck
He drives the Big Red Truck every third day.
Twenty-nine years of service
He savored all those memories -
He went through a lot of heartache and cheer.
He was in a fire last Friday.
He saved a child in the hallway.
He let that little girl breathe his air.
The dark smoke cut right through him,
And that little girl won't get to meet him.
She can only thank him in her prayers.
Here it comes down the road.
The sirens scream through town.
Red lights flashing all aglow.
Everyone knows that sound -
The sound of help on the way.
Today his body will go underground.
His brothers walking behind him.
He's going home to stay.
He rides the Big Red Truck...for the last time today.

Every time I listen to this song it reminds me of my great grandfather who died in the line of duty
I'm 36 years old and a retired 3rd generation volunteer firefighter here.. not only was my maternal grandfather chief in 60s and 70s, my father was his 1st Asst. Chief.. my mother was the very 2nd female firefighter in my hometown. At age 14, I joined the Explorer Post; at 18, I was voted into the department; 21 years old, voted in as Secretary (though I was at college on meeting nights).. I was also a member of the ladies auxiliary.. at 24, due to moving out of district, I handed in my keys and gear... I attempted to join another department about 10 years later but we didn't mesh well. I said to my dad one day that I didn't feel like I earned the title of firefighter.. he looked at me and said "you were at every meeting, drill, call and fundraiser back home for 10 years; you put your blood, sweat, tears and heart into all you did.. to me, you earned 'Retired volunteer firefighter'.. I'm proud of you kiddo"
This was published the day my two brother firefighters were killed in the line of duty, a year later I can still see their faces. Rest In Peace 🙏Ivan Flanscha and Zachary Anthony🙏 who rode the big red truck for the last time March 22nd 2018.

I wish god would have put me in that building with them, it was 11th months two days ago and I want nothing more than to be with them again because they showed me what being a fireman really was, not just a bunch of training and an expensive suit.

"On the day before I was born my mother was burning trash in a barrel and the fire accidentally got out. My mother started beating out the fire with an old broom. That evening my Mom went into labor; and bright and early the next day November 16, 1962 I came into this world. Talk about imprinting, I've been a firefighter and a Chaplain to my fire service brothers and sisters now for 36 years and still counting......"

I’m just glad this artist paid attention, idk about other academy’s but mine drilled into us the difference between air and oxygen, a lot of shows and stuff get it wrong and say we carry oxygen bottles, no it’s air, if it was pure oxygen we would be asking for a bad time, glad attention to detail was paid

Granddaughter of a 30 plus year firefighter from Sydney Nova Scotia Canada, who raised 4 children alone as a single father after his wife left when his youngest was 5 years old, this makes me think of him he retired as Captain in 1994 and died in 2005, I don't remember him to well because I was only 7, but my father (his second youngest) always tells us stories about him, like one night there was a fire in a house and a (heavier)woman was trapped on the second floor and he told her to jump and that he would catch her and he did, for years after she would send him letters, this is how I choose to remember him, the strong single father that would do anything to save anyone no matter the risk to him self, not the sick older man that I remember, but the one from my fathers stories. RIP Papa. In memory of Captain John MacCormack
God bless brother
am i the only one who got cold chills?
Tears in my eyes. Thxs for this. Greetings and highest respect for all firefighters, paramedics, docs and cops. From Germany with love!

did 5 years in large department. had to leave for injury and mental health. never felt as fulfilled with purpose sense. but damn it takes a toll
my dad is a volunteer firefighter and everytime i hear that tone i get scared, so i pray, cry, and hope. i get scared that he may not come back home to me. i pray.. until i hear the keys jiggling i’m the door and see him walk through that front door knowing that he is safe

Kind of hits home. I'm one of 7 career inter city firefighters in my family. No hero here. For what its worth, I haven't "saved" one single person in 35 years. But I had an uncanny knack of finding dead bodies. More than I care to count.
It's so sad I could cry.
Watching this the day after Chief Bobby Halton has passed away. Having met the gentleman and spend time with him, this songs fits incredibly well. I know there are thousands more who would share this statement. RIP Chief Halton

Best FD in Ohio! Love the guys there!
Volunteer Firefighter in a town 10 minutes south of Buffalo, NY. When we get toned for a worker, its a rush. people always question how can we run in while everyone else is running out. Ill tell you why, its a part of the job, we are there when someone's day is going bad to do what we can to make it better. I've been on EMS and fire calls where someone we've handled will come up and thank us because they realize without us they could have lost their life or a loved one could have lost their life.

Hi Palmerton, I raised my kids in Lansford. I grew up in Pennsylvania myself. I miss the fierce price PA Firefighters have in what they do.
My mom is ems and I am a volunteer firefighter this song means so much to me thank you
I cant sing this song without crying. Especially the part : he rides the big red truck .... the last time today ..
As the daughter of a fireman I know the sacrifice they make each and every time they go out on a call. They don't do it for the praise Lord knows they deserve it though , they put their lives on the line each time they go out. They don't count the cost that it might end their lives , they do it because they care that is what they were born to do. It is in their hearts minds and souls . If you have never been a first responder or the family of one it's hard to understand why they do what they do , as a daughter of a fireman I'm not going to lie and say that I didn't get scared when he went on a call because I always did . I begged GOD to PLEASE JUST LET MY DADDY COME HOME,I know the sacrifice they make (we all make ) when this is the job our loved ones do.
My dad was a fire chief for the local fire department I rode with him to every call so this song brings back memories 🥹
Won’t be forgot
