I agree that cabin service twice wasn't always needed, but reducing services while increasing the gratuities doesn't add up. I cruised NCL in November and some food venues were not available at all. I just don't want to have a lesser experience at a greater cost. Thanks for the info. Bon voyage.

I am really upset that kinky boots will not be shown on our March cruise we booked ncl because of the show caliber they had.

Just came off the Star. Confirming Continental breakfast is $4.95+ on NCL now. Beef cuts are a lower grade than pre-covid, even Tepanyaki steak was tough when cooked medium rare. Thankfully Cagney's was still good. Shows were underwhelming, though 2nd week was better than the 1st on a 14 day cruise. There did not seem to be any cut backs on cleaning so far, the ship was kept very clean by very diligent staff, and we still had 2 room cleans. I don't mind dropping to a single clean now that there are no more towel animals at night.

I have a NCL cruise booked in March and pretty disappointed with the direction they seem to be heading. Couldnt care less about the Internet or Behind the Scene tours. All the while food quality is being cut and prices are being rasied for less services? Not sounding good.

Just sailed a few weeks ago. Food was stellar like pre pandemic quality. They did cut buffet hours like late night snacks until 1145pm is done. Buffet is a hard close at 930pm but they still have the 24 hour place to eat so there’s still food. We did miss the late night snacks though at the buffet.

NCL had really impressed me with the “great cruise comeback.” They had improved so many areas where I felt they were sub-par. My recent cruise was fantastic and I felt was worth more than I paid. Changing ingredients and removing entertainment could really impact the brand. One of the comments we had was that our Teppanyaki steak was amazing compared to eating at Kobe on land.

The price increases are real! I priced a cruise a month ago for Dec 2023…it was $3900 with all the free at sea options for 3 guests in a balcony. I priced it yesterday, and it is now almost $4700 for the same room. The free guest is now $99, the room gratuities have increased, they charge more now for the floor and location of your room, cancelling shows, and with a 10-20% price increase on a booking is honestly discouraging, and frankly making me consider another cruise line for the Dec sailing. Nickel and diming is not the issue here…this is straight up gouging in my opinion.

If you have flexibility, you may want to consider last-minute bookings. We just booked an Alaska cruise we had been thinking about since pre-pandemic, and for 3 of us with a bunch of extras, it came out to very little more than what a single person would cost for advance booking. While there seems to be record demand, I think there are likely also going to be more cancellations with people struggling financially. There was no shortage of last-minute deals for our desired vacation time. I made a whole spreadsheet of prices for various cruises and focused on particularly cheap outliers. You may need to check different ports, itineraries, etc., but there are deals to be had.

One of the greatest increases I have seen is for the vegetable platter that I used to purchase before the cruise and have it delivered to our cabin. Sometimes on a longer cruise I would order 2 of them so I could have one per week.Just last December, 2022, on our Epic transatlantic cruise the vegetable tray was about $10. I just looked at prices for our December 2023 cruise, the price is now a whopping $67!!!!! That is such a large increase that I sure won't be ordering the tray anymore!!

I went on my first cruise ever last August on the NCL Joy and loved it. My sister & I are going on the Prima this April. I've heard that one of the shows (Noise Boys) was canceled but the Donna Summer show is still available. It's disappointing that there will only be one show.

Hi Nancy 👋 I really, really hope that I get to do one on my next cruise! I'm really fascinated by all of the inner workings. They shared lots of great insights about how the ships works at my Q&A on the Star, now I have even more questions!

I was on Bliss and Encore in the pre Xmas and post Xmas period and saw up charges added in the 2 week period. The big picture is for NCL to get it's debt paid down and survive for the long term. My friends just went on Dawn in Jan and she said NCL has changed and she was not happy w lower service for higher charges.

My husband and I cruised on the Breakaway in December and we were so disappointed that they didn’t open the pool roof even once and there was dining several times a day and no one felt comfortable hanging out in the pool while people were dining all around the pool and hot tub area. The upper deck was nice but service was slow for beverage service.

Ok serious question. If they reduce room cleaning to once per day , in the morning, does that also mean no more towel animals in n the evening? Seriously I LOVED those. I didn’t even know it was a thing. I looked forward to coming back to my cabin and finding a cute and creative surprise waiting for me. It was one of my favorite memories of my cruise. (This was 10 years ago.) One of them I even kept on my nightstand for at least another day, rather than unraveling it. (Edit: I fear I may have found the answer in another comment thread 😢)

Friends of us who booked the cruise from UK, did not have service charges in the cruise bill. I wonder if the charges are only for US-based booking. Another recent policy change is NCL won't refund port taxes if they change the itinerary skipping the ports. They pocket the money for themselves. I knew this from thepointsguy blog. I am dissapointed because NCL made itinerary changes skipping Bonaire and Grenada in 10-day Caribbean cruise from La Romana, DR in April 2024.

Just to tell the story! We had a big group travel on NCL Cruise in 2018, and 2019! My wife has one cocktail a day, and I prefer at least three when it is in my drink packages on the cruise! Just saying that we loved NCL, we love just eating in our on ship bookings! We had 24 of our friends booking on these two cruises!, and then we came into covid! at the end of our cruise in 2021.

I'm going on the Encore in March. I hope it all that I expected from NCL.

Hi Diane 👋 I agree, I am a big fan of the Choir of Man. I didn't know what to expect, but it blew me away when I was on the Encore last year. I think I must have seen the show four times!

Used to get 3 specialty dining on a 7 day. Just booked Alaska on Bliss and only 2. To buy 2 more specialty dining it $118 pp pre cruise.

Nice video. Rumor has it just about all production shows will be eliminated. They’re trying to repay 12 billion dollars in debt and it costs a lot of money to keep the entertainers onboard while performing 2 nights a week (4 shows). It seems they’re going to be headed towards bringing guest entertainers on for short-term contracts for the foreseeable future. I don’t have proof but I have sources on the inside lol. I guess we shall see. I just got off Bliss and Jersey Boy and SIX were still on. However, I’m booked on Escape April 30th and After Midnight is not even listed to book as entertainment.

In Le Bistro, they’ve added an upcharge for the filet mignonette Rossini which used to be included, and they’ve taken the crab roulade appetizer off the menu. These are small changes, but they leave a bad taste particularly for those of us who’ve cruised NCL in the past and have certain expectations.

NCL is known for their big shows. The thought of them removing more shows would be a disaster for the brand. If Kinky Boots wasn’t financially feasible anymore, I get it. It had so much in terms of cast size, costumes, tech, etc. Jersey Boys is less intensive. I really hope we don’t see a cut in more big show entertainment.

Was on the Encore in October. Ended up seeing Kinky Boots twice because there was plenty of walk-in room both nights and empty seats. I was (of course) impressed but I was surprised to see such a big cast show. I later found the salary range for that cast (on a casting website) - Lola was paid $2k/wk, the other leads $1.5K and the ensemble, $1K/wk. My guess is was the most expensive show on the fleet and could no longer be justified as a 4x/wk offering.

Our Encore sailing had no room at either show in September. The cast of Kinky Boots was great. The actors for the big shows are not NCL employees. They are cast and placed on the ship by a casting agency. Many have credits on Broadway, West End, and in touring productions of Kinky Boots and other shows. They aren’t your typical cruise line variety entertainers… they are a special group of talent picked specifically for these roles. I’d put our Kinky Boots cast up against those I’ve seen in the show on Broadway and on tour any day. I really hope they quickly find new shows to give them and their amazing talent a new home.

I disagree about the sponsorship. I would hate not to get whole story because of fear of sponsorship withdrawal!

Carnival may be considered low level to many, but at least they had many more shows. The shows of the guests were even more hilarious 😂. If you know what I mean.

My husband and I were talking about our next cruise for this year, I said we've been everyplace we've wanted to go - some more than once. I love Puerto Vallarta and I'd like to spend more than 8 hours in port by taking a cruise. We decided we're going to Puerto Vallarta at an all inclusive resort, I believe we're not going to be nickeled and dimed and have a relaxing vacation at my favorite place for a week. Our last cruise on Ruby Princess to Alaska last year in June was our worst cruise experience ever, I don't want a repeat.

I used to live/work on St. Maarten. I left the island the week before hurricane Maria and haven’t been back as we relocated work to the UK for about a year and then I left the job. I wanted to go back and cruise in. But now, think I might just fly and stay on the island in an AirBnB or VRBO in my old town.

Yes, we sailed on the Joy in Feb 2023 and there no longer is complimentary room service of any kind. Extremely disappointing.

I am super excited about seeing six so I'm happy to see that it is (so far) not gone I'm sad to hear about kinky boots though. I am assuming that they are letting go some of the shows that are more expensive to get the rights to do

The Spinnaker lounge is one of my favourites, so I totally relate to finding a quiet place. I find that O'Sheehan's / The Local can be great for this, particularly if you can score one of the primo booths. I ready do not like that they raised the base cruising prices so high then apply promotions to that. 50 % off a cruise sounds great but the last few I have priced is putting me about 1,000 to 1,500 more than what I paid late last year and this year so far. It is now not the value it use to be. Yes I will still cruise but instead of three cruises it will be two per year. I am also looking at land trips now as I can do some fairly upscale international land vacations cheaper than a cruise. They are going to have to get many new customers to replace us old loyal customers…

The two NCL cruises I took, there were four of us in a balcony cabin. In the morning, the cabin steward would turn the bed that comes out of the ceiling back into it and in the evening turn it down for use again. Also in the morning they would make the couch that turned into a bed, into a couch again for the day. Guests were absolutely not allowed to make up or turn up the ceiling bed. If cleaning will be once a day, what will happen to these beds, will they just stay out all day?

Grant, my husband and I will be sailing on the Epic TA this month. When we booked late last year, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Cirque Dreams were still scheduled. Weeks later, it disappeared from the website. I’m so disappointed since we were able to see Jersey Boys and Six on the Bliss PC crossing in December and had a blast! Luckily, the Beatles are still scheduled, as is Howl at the Moon, but I’m wondering what kind of entertainment we’ll have for two weeks. Ugh! I’m downloading lots of content to bring with me as a backup since the FaS wifi is not capable to stream content. 😉

I had a co-worker who recently was on the Epic and they had an Elton John Tribute show in addition to Burn the Floor. So while it certainly isn't a musical it sounds like they are arranging some other headliner entertainment. Cruises aren’t cheap and it does bother me that there are still so many things that cost extra once you are on board. The go-carts, laser tags and arcade for example. My kids were off exploring and we got a message of $300 worth of charges on our account from the arcade. Had a heart attack on the spot.

Since we cruise with my 5 year old, I would love the option to pay for the second cleaning each day.

@@CruisewithGrant NCL Creative Studios isn't hiring for Priscilla nor was it hiring for Priscilla last month.

I think the room cleaning should be on a room by room basis. If you are 1 or 2 people in a room, yes, only clean it once a day. but if you have 3 or 4 people, where you need the bunks put up and brought down, or the hide-a-bed put back and made up, those rooms should get the twice a day service.

I’ve sailed on many different lines. I sail NCL in a few days and this I the first time that I don’t have a good feeling about a ship/line pre-cruise. Too many changes and price increases since I booked last February. I think this will be a one and done. Well 2nd and done because my first NCL was in 1989 on the Norway and cruising and the service has definitely changed since then.

My wife and I cruised on the Prima the week of Dec. 16th 2022 and loved it. The ship is beautiful and mostly great but not without it's issues. We are 1st time NCL cruisers and had a "fun enough time" to take advantage of booking future cruises on board. What is being said about the cuts and monetary increases is primarily true. So my take, is to off set those things as much as possible and take advantage of deals they offer. They had up to $4K match (you 2k them 2k) of future cruise money. They also offer onboard credit by being a stock holder, I believe up to $250 depending on length of cruise. Also try to book in low season if you can. Not that I want to pay more or like all the cuts, but I do understand that being shutdown for so long made serious impacts on the industry as a whole. I try to remember that most new ships cost a BILLION $ to build and millions to run and NCL has 4 on order in the next few years and for comparison Carnival just 1. So it seems they are really trying to "right the NCL ship line" as they say.

My guess is the bigger the cast the more likely it is to be cancelled. NCL started charging for the room service continental breakfast at the beginning of December. It's now $4.95 regardless of what you order. I ended up only ordering it once on my transatlantic.

The muster drill process isn’t that bad; scheduled or in-room. When we we boarded the Encore and went to check-in for our assembly station there was nobody there so we had to go back later. The scheduled drill doesn’t take too much time. “Back in the day” you used to have to actually bring your life jacket on deck with you and learn to put it on. No matter how they do it… it’s only 30 min of your vacation. :)

Seriously considering canceling my NCL and booking with Royal

Hello Grant, we have lots of cruise experience but 1st time in May on NCL Getaway for a family event we are invited to. . We are used to the traditional pre paid gratuity payment for staff with RC, Celebrity and other lines, and most of the time will tip in envelopes extra for cabin stewards, waiters, if service was attentive. Confusing to us with NCL is their service charge $20 a day per person (balcony cabin), which when I booked with a NCL travel agent, it was never brought up or did they recommend it to be prepaid. I discovered this when reading the fine print on the cruise contract. I called NCL and confirmed it could be prepaid, if not would be auto charged on cruise last day to our account. I asked if this charge replaces the "Gratuity" charge and was told yes, but read and hear it does not? what is your understanding? Roy Erskine

Hi Roy 👋 Thanks for your question, sorry for the delay in responding. So every cruise line seems to call this something different, many call it gratuity, but NCL calls it service charge. The important things to note is that as far as I can get information these don't automatically go to all team members, so it's a bit different than tipping. It seems NCL collects the money and then distributes them through some of type of "incentive programs", but the criteria for this aren't very transparent. So I would say yes, it's the same as what you know from RCL, but likely different from tipping which you may have read elsewhere. I hope that this helps!

All of your taxes and port fees will have been paid before sailing. No worries there.

After seeing Six on the Breakaway (before it was even on Broadway) I was disappointed to see that there's no big production show on Getaway in October, especially for a long cruise. I'm still hoping for (but not expecting) a later addition, because it feels like Burn the Floor, comedy, and the piano bar won't really be enough entertainment for 7 sea days!

It looks like as of now they still have Million Dollar Quartet. I had a chance to see this one at the end of 2021 and it was a fun time (still looking forward to seeing Six!!) Went with Epic, August 2022, and unfortunately Pricilla was cancelled due to injury/illness. Have booked new cruise in October this year, also with Epic. Really hope Pricilla is back then :) The show they are promoting on the website, is Burn the floor, but no one more than that yet. Think it was the same when I last went with Epic, that it only showed one show until a few weeks before departure. Then Pricilla appeared on both website and app. Question: do you think they added more days to the cruise (11 instead of 7 days), and then also took the opportunity to raise the prices overall ? because I paid almost twice as much for this cruise compared to the one last year. Regardless, it's fair to say that everything has become more expensive in general. Love cruises, so I probably would have booked regardless ;)

HI Camilla 👋 thanks for sharing. I certainly hope that they keep it, it's one of my favs. I'm not sure if I fully understand your question. I think what you're asking is if they've made the itineraries longer so that they could raise prices? Based on what NCL has been reporting it doesn't sound that way. At their investor call earlier this year they said they are just on track to slowly increase their prices. Good to keep your eye on prices in case it drops before your final payment so you can get some money back!

I can confirm NCL does now charge a room service fee for the continental breakfast. I believe it is $4.95. I just got off the Dawn last week. Also, they didn't have a behind the scenes tour.

@@CruisewithGrant We had a great time. The ship was small but the staff was wonderful. It was for 11 days out of Tampa. Can’t wait to go back.

Booked my first NCL for April and am excited to see the Broadway shows. Hope they are still there when we sail!

Hi Susan 👋 Thanks for the comment. It certainly looks like there will be shows. I just looked at the NCL casting agency and they were casting for Six and Jersey Boys as recent as 2 weeks ago so I'll take that as a good sign. Will be following what's happening on the ships where the shows seem impacted. What ship will you be travelling on?

Grant, when the ship is at a Port, do they always offer discounts for spa, salon, or barbershop services (for those guests that stay on board)?

Hi there 👋 if you've sailed with NCL before your Latitudes status may entitle you to a discount while in port. The onboard promotions can vary, depending on how busy they are during your sailing. Keep an eye out on the flyers in your FreeStyle daily, but also drop by the spa and ask about any promos. Hope this helps

Hi Grant, we are sailing the Gem in May. We had booked the cruise mid 2022 with our final payment done in December 2022. All gratitudes paid in advance. With that said do you think we will get hit with another ncl service charge.

Nope. Pre-paid gratuities are based on booking date. Not sailing date. If you had not paid in advance, you would be charged the new amount on your onboard account during your cruise.

Hi Sky 👋 The Jewel class ships (which includes the Jewel 😜) usually have a production cast, singers and dancers. They usually have 2-3 shows they perform along with guest entertainers. You should have lots to keep you busy! Hope this is helpful, thanks for the comment

I really hope the disappearance of shows like Priscilla and Kinky Boots is not because of the content. Maybe they just want to rotate in some different or smaller shows. Excited about the return of the ship tour though!

Hi Garrett 👋 Thanks for the comment. I initially had the same thought / concern. It seems like they were more focussed on shows with big ensembles and perhaps more costly licensing fees. It does seem a bit peculiar that some of the ships now have two shows and Encore, Escape and Epic just have one... I've heard through the grapevine that new shows are coming, but it could be next year. The behind the ship tour was great, so lucky I got to go on my most recent cruise. Have you ever been?

The whole concept of daily extra charges, gratuities, this extra, that extra... it's all deceptive marketing and annoying. It should be outlawed. They should advertise a price which includes everything that's not optional and they should pay their staff properly from regular revenue, not expect us to tip their employees. This is a dreadful American custom, so ingrained now that Americans (and Canadians apparently!) consider it normal now. NO ! Stand up to this! If people stop the optional stuff, staff will complain to their employers and the employer will be forced to pay them properly from revenue.

I cruised on Bliss 12/2/22 and I paid a $5.95 service charge fee for delivery of the continental breakfast. If they don't clean in the PM when and how will the activity flyer be delivered?

I go to the buffet and pick up breads/ pastries. Place on a plate and cover with a napkin, then bring it to your room. Never had a problem doing that. My husband gets the coffees. No charge.

Hey there 👋 So you can use WhatsApp, but only if you're using onboard wifi minutes so this can eat up your minutes pretty fast. I have also heard some people who have been able to get iMessage to work between iPhone users by just connecting to the ship's wifi (no minutes required). Has anyone else had this experience too!

I'm confused, so on the Free at Sea Beverage Package, does this mean I'm paying a daily gratuity whether I drink a beer or not? Or does the gratuity only happen as I order a beer (ie. Gratuity added as drink is ordered)? Can I still get a fresh squeezed OJ for breakfast but just pay for it?

Definetly watch some videos on the different drink packages for NCL its got some quirks. To answer your question, if you buy a drink package, you pay the gratuities on that package up front, so you wouldnt pay anything while you drink or daily. And, yes you can get anything you want if you pay for it, however the Fresh Sqeezed OJ does NOT seem to be included on the "premium" drink package, as stupid as that sounds. You would need their "premuim plus" drink package for all included Fresh Squeezed OJ.

I believe when you get the free at sea beverage package, you pay the per day gratuities up front.

When you book your cruise including the Free at Sea package, you will be charged gratuities on the entire cost of the Unlimited Open Bar... UNLESS you opt out of it. For example, the fare for our upcoming 7 day cruise on the Gem in October included $305.20 gratuities before we removed Open Bar from our Free at Sea package (we don't drink.) If you have only the occasional drink, the package may not be worth it, even though it's "free".

@@B-ch6uk Yes. You are paying the 20% gratuity on the cost of the Open Bar package which includes an unlimited number of drinks (excluding those included in the Premium Plus beverage package). The $305 would cover both of us in the cabin and could be more or less, depending on length of cruise. Prices are listed per day, but you buy the package for the entire cruise. In our case: 7 x $109 = $763. That's the value of the package I get Free at Sea. 20% for gratuities = $152.60 is what I have to pay, no matter how many drinks I have.

I am very disappointed to learn of the elimination of plays. It was a highlight of NCL cruises.

The the cruise lines say we need to increase revenue and decrease costs due to income lost due to covid. Look at any industry that has done this before -- did prices return to normal after the crisie was over -- NO. Same think with the cruise lines -- things will never go back.

I am not upset about the increase in daily room charges but I am upset about reducing the cabin steward’s salary . NCL needs to rethink this . I am hearing a lot of negative comments.

Hi Barbara 👋 Thanks for sharing. I've been reading some interesting reviews about this on "crew centre" as well. The changes, which have been introduced across most cruise lines are not being very well received by guests or crew members. Like any change I also hope this will be adjusted based on what they're learning. I hope you're having a great day!

NCL is too expensive for what you get. Try one of the other cruise lines.

Nooo! Priscilla was the only reason that ship was on my list! It's one of my favorite queer movies. Of course the get rid of the LGBT stories first...
