Big ol’ Squarebody Roof Rack from Baseline Overland - Oregon BDR Prep

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I'm doing more prep for the 2023 @Powerstop Brakes Trail, and this time it's all about getting heavy duty storage from an actual roof rack that's made for work. That's where Baseline Overland comes in, and man am I glad I didn't have to fabricate this from scratch. They make a great piece of gear.

    I wish I knew about Baseline earlier. I have a 1995 4WD Suburban and built my own rack last year. I kept it to 8 feet long since I wanted to use the factory roof mount locations. My roof slopes at 10-11 degrees at the side edges, which took some designing to get around. All in all I'm happy with it, but having the additional two feet would have been nice. All told, the aluminum rails and 80/20 slats cost me about $450, not including my time. Thankfully, I had access to a Bridgeport mill for the drilling and slotting.

    I always do a test nutsert now... i went in blind while putting my very first one ever in a friend's roof (also for a rack) and i didnt know how much pressure to put on it. I ended up breaking the attachment for the M8 Bolt off in the nutsert and had to drill the whole thing out. 1/10 would not reccomend Also idk if it is necessary or even advisable but i was so worried about water getting in so i ran a small bead of silicon around the lip of the nutsert before insertion.

    Smart move on the test. I think a dab of silicone is super-sensible, too. This rack had gaskets, but better to double up a seal for real water-tightness.

    This is a really nice rack but they're a little too proud for my pocket. Nice choice in aluminum. I've been looking and all the mounting systems seem to be under par. I'm hoping to find a rack that has a interior plate for each mount also so the roof is sandwiched between two plates instead of the bolt holes through sheet metal. Fyi my Suburban roof is only one layer not two. 91 square.

    Masking tape or painters tape on the drill bit helps limit over travel. Wrap 3 or 4 layers leaving about 1/4” of drill bit showing. Depending on application of course. Also, take a look at plus nuts. If there is room behind a panel they tend to work a bit better and not spin over time.

    I will be ordering one at some point. It looks great. What I’d like to see is if it’s possible to mount solar panels to it and they be below the frame so you can’t see them unless your above looking down. I don’t ever plan on having a roof top tent but I do plan on having a substantial house battery setup so I can run a battery powered AC and other power hungry items.

  • @WillometMotorFab

    @WillometMotorFab

    I totally think you could. The extruded bars move broadly in their slots, they have slots on all sides, and I bet a panel or two would fit nicely between them. That's a really good idea on the big house battery. What sort of adventures do you have planned?

    @@WillometMotorFab I’m looking to do week long trips in the future. I need the AC because here in the south it’s impossible to sleep in a vehicle in the middle of the summer. I also have sleep apnea and if I’m bring the family which are all girls I’ve got to make many amenities to keep them happy. There’s some long trials in WV I want to do and eventually make it to Utah and do what I can there. My barn door will never be to the level yours is but I do have a 14bolt for the rear and I might upgrade the front one day. I’ve got a standard 6 inch lift I’m going to install this fall. I’m going to get the ORD springs but in stages. I still need bumpers and a winch. I’ve only had the truck for a yr so it’s a work in progress. I’m still in the process of adding tools to do the things I need. Thanks to guys like you and baseline the tools I need to I have to buy keep shrinking. I’m down to just needing a decent hobby welder so I can install my future axles and frame reinforcements. It’s gonna be more cost effective just to buy the bumpers and roof rack.

    Take a look at cascadia 4x4. They make a thin, heavy duty solar panel that resists scratching so it is purpose built to install on this type of extruded cross bar and even stack things on if needed.

    Now that you've had the roof rack on for awhile, have you seen any water intrusion at the nutserts? or have the gaskets that it came with been enough to keep water out? Ill be installing one on my K5 and I'm curious of real world experience with the rack.
