In about 1950, when my mom was a teenager, her parents founded Western Welding Works in Carmichael, California. So my brother and I grew up visiting a fab shop nearly once a week. By the time I was old enough to learn anything about it, the shop had more than ten years of history and a handful of additional employees, with my grandpa making the tech decisions and grandma running the office. After about 30 years at it, they sold it (to an employee) and retired, so it is no longer in the family, but it shows up for me in search results, so it appears to still be healthy today.

Baz, I must say your approach to business is spot on. Customer satisfaction is king and many companies new and old tend to forget that. Really enjoy the videos and I look forward to more of them. I like the idea of bringing on apprentices and I think you'll have a long waiting queue stacked up. Cheers.

Was very pleasantly surprised to see a mid-week pop up in my feeds. These videos are getting better and better! Great editing of some really interesting content. Of course, super great to see the two of you building this new company. I particularly liked the shots of you two welding together :D Wishing you all the best with the new company!

D6M, fixed one before, seen acouple come through the shop and get fixed by co workers. Common spot for them to break, we pull everything close together again, gouge and weld the crack inside and out (weld topside then back gouge and weld inside you know the deal). Then put a bent 1/2” plate over the bore, and then just line bore the pivot bores again using our portable line boring setup. Haven’t seen another one come back.

Just looking in the photo album, looks like I used 3/4” not 1/2” thick, hard to tell on video. Also Been a while since I did it, about 3 1/2 years since. if I remember correctly caterpillar may have a procedure aswell. Hope this helps. Whatever you do (cat procedure or not) will be of the best quality! Been a longtime follower on Instagram!

I would of got a workshop with a crane already in as installing one of them in your workshop if your renting isn't going to make a lot of sense if you outgrow/have to move. Maybe a jib crane is a cheaper option than gantry

Re. The messages and emails. Perhaps get someone you trust logged in on your account to deal with messages. They can categorise the serious jobs and then forward those to you. Which helps relieve the pressure. You can also have them do your posts etc. Including schedule them. So sit down for a few hours 1day a week. Line all your posts up to go out automatically

Happy days Baz, good that Cal got coded too, yous didn’t hang around doing thon 13t buckets, in & out and done 😂, the wee skip motor with the rear body bearers that needed welding also needed a set of rear spring eyes bushes too, but then again it’s a skip motor 😬, ideal that your looking to bring an apprentice through as well, I’m a BIG advocate for apprenticeships, my apprenticeship was the making of me, keep the videos coming my man!!!

The wash grid would have looked mega if it was galvanised. I like the Mustang, very nice indeed. Mucky buckets, had a few of them to deal with, concrete stuck in them is the worst because it has to be broken out. And, you need a much bigger building because there isn't enough room for your business and that of your brothers and a 5ton gantry crane in there would be a bit tight. Maybe, you could rent a buildig with a crane already in it, that would save you having to buy one. Interesting stuff going on as usual.

The car is a 1967 Ford Mustang GT500 "Eleanor" recreation from the 2000 film Gone in 60 seconds starring Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie. A very good film in my opinion. I wonder if the news in the next chapter is expanding the current shop as I can see you outgrowing the premises very quickly, maybe an extension on the side of the current shop.
