Here is another tip for milk usage. Make butter, cheese or yogurt, then spray the whey on the fruit trees to keep bugs off.😊

I love all the great information on your homestead, animals, garden, food processing/storage ~ ALL good~~!

I grew up on a dairy farm. Once there was a storm that flooded the lot by the milk barn. Thunder, lighting and sheets of rain. It was time to milk and the cows were proceeding to the barn as my brothers were walking behind them. One cow stepped on a downed power line and immediately went down dead. It could have been my brother. God protects.

Thanks, this is great info! I don't plan to have a cow, even though I would love raw milk, but on 2.5 acre, I have 3.5 but, there is the house, garage, carports, the chicken coop/run and the garden. And most importantly I have mobility issues at the moment so I am kind of stuck. But happy to have my first chicks ever at 61. Blessings 🙏💞

71 Useless Eater here. This is another good video for beginners! May I add some from experience? Course I can because you aren't here to bitch slap me for being long winded. 🙂 I see many people say, "Oh my animals are like family." Be careful of that mind set. A few examples. Dad was basically a 'cow whisperer'. He wasn't afraid of anything. If he cut an artery - DUCT TAPE. Anyway, when calving, especially out in an open field, he would tag, cut off the jewels, or whatever without a second thought. One time, in the corral and next to the feed bunk (escape route), the good natured cow (historically) suddenly lost it and went right over him stepping on his head. He just toughed it out. Later he started getting headaches and Mom took him to the hospital. He had a brain bleed. One time I was checking the herd at 2:30 in the morning during an absolute whiteout. I couldn't see across the corral because of the snow. I was walking down my loading alleyway when I was hit in the back of the head. Hard! It didn't knock me out nor was there any pain. I forgot to tie the 'bow' to the panels. These hold the panels close so crowding won't open up the alleyway. It had fallen toward me and nailed me. Probably all the clothes (hood, stocking cap, blah blah) helped soften the blow. It was -30 if I remember right. Not to long later I decided to go get a tetunas shot. (never work rusty wire/iron without leather gloves.) Anyway I told the nurse that I was lucky, recounting the bow hitting me in the head earlier. She said "ALWAYS tell your spouse or someone that this happened. You could get 'screwy' or get symtoms days or weeks later and nobody would know what caused it. I better stop. So many stories. ....

one more .. I forget things. I noticed fairly early in the video where the calf was standing next to its momma. Did you catch how it was stomping it's feet? That is instinct (threat). They retain that their whole lives and something could trigger it at any time. Harmless when young for the most part. But when they are older and weigh more than you? Something to keep in mind. Later... 🙂

I have a few questions about raw unpasteurized milk first, how long can it last in the fridge, and will it last longer if pasteurized? Second, how do you get milk during the period when the cow isn't producing anymore, and how long can that be? Lastly, Can you give raw unpasteurized (or pasteurized) milk to babies? How young? Google is very contradicting and confusing.. You guys seem like a more reliable source. God bless your beautiful home =)

Good questions! And yes, Google is definitely not the place to go for info about raw milk 😉 First, just to clarify, "raw unpasteurized" is redundant. Being unpasteurized it what makes milk raw. If you pasteurize it, it's not raw. Raw milk, if handled properly, will last for about 2 weeks in the fridge. Raw milk is living. It's full of beneficial enzymes and good bacteria. If you pasteurize it you kill all that stuff, so yes pasteurized milk would last longer. When our cow is dry (when she's not giving milk because she's gonna have a calf soon) we usually just drink a lot less and get milk from the store. There's a store around here that sells A2A2 non-homogenized milk. Pasteurized, but still a little better. Our cow is usually dry for about 2 months. I would not recommend using raw cow's milk as a "formula" milk for babies. It's not gonna hurt them in sense that it's "bad" for them, but it's not as easily digested like human milk or even goat milk. It will usually constipate babies. Our children all started drinking it as soon as they were old enough to just want a glass of milk or have milk on cereal or something.

Not on purpose 😉 Kind of. We get an AI tech to come out to breed her. We had her calving in the Spring, but this time we struggled getting her bred. It took 5 tries to get the job done, so it just kept getting pushed farther and farther out 😬 I finally decided I didn't care when it happened, we just needed to get her pregnant.

Is that cow haltered all the time?

I don’t know if you made a video on this, but how do you deal with predators or pest for garden or livestock

We don’t necessarily have a video specifically about that. We had problems with raccoons getting our sweet corn, but we have a dog on the property now and that seems to be keeping them away. We had hawks getting our chickens, but basically we ended up getting rid of most of our chickens and changing the housing up a little bit. That’s really about all we’ve dealt with.

Yes. When she has her calf is when she starts producing milk, just like a human mother 😊 The cow gives way more milk than the calf needs. For the first two weeks, the calf gets to be with it’s mama 24/7 and we milk once a day, then after two weeks the calf is separated at night so that we get all of the milk in the morning, then the calf gets to drink all day. The calf gets plenty of milk and so do we 😊

Guernseys are the best! Contact the American Guernsey Association. You can see the straws they have available on their website. They are also really good about helping you pick out the right bull for what you're looking for. $1,500 is probably a pretty decent price for a cow, depending on what breed and age the cow is. It’s pretty easy to spend up to $2,500 though.

Yes and no. Beef especially wouldn't need it. We get pretty harsh winters here though, and dairy cows are a little more finicky. While they may be able to "survive" without shelter, it will put extra stress on them and they won't give as much milk.
