Big Law Interview Process | Legal Assistant Edition

Hello everyone! In this video, I describe what the interview process was like for the legal assistant position at a big law firm. Spoiler Alert I was given the offer and I accepted the position. I know how intimidating it can be when you do not know what to expect, which is why I made this video.
I describe step by step as to how I applied, when I was called in for an interview, the types of questions I was asked, my experience with each individual, and how long it took until I heard back.

As someone further ahead in their career, I would suggest never accepting an offer on the spot for any job. Express your appreciation for the offer and ask for time to consider and then negotiate the offer. Always.

That's a long interview with a lot of people for a legal assistant position. I've seen large firms or corporations do things like that. It really adds a lot of pressure and stress to the interviewee. Really, imo, they should have you interview with no more than two people, and then if you're a finalist, perhaps interview with a couple more people. I hate questions like "what was a time when you have a stressful situation and what did you do about it?" Every day in the legal field consists of stressful situations! LOL. As for accepting an offer, I would suggest asking about benefits, as you mentioned, specifically (1) health insurance plans - what are the premiums and copays for employees and families (they may say insurance is free, for example, then you find out the cost is enormous to add family/children, and when does your insurance go into effect; and is there an HSA? Are there other benefits such as life insurance, short and long term disability, tuition reimbursement? (2) 401(k) - Does the firm contribute and how much, every pay period or at the end of the year? (3) As for salary, is it starting pay with a chance to receive an increase after a probationary period? Are there bonuses? Some firms offer bonuses when a case settles, and/or at the end of the year.

Best tip is to be genuine and hones. Always show high interest in learning. Share how you plan to apply your skills into the law firm daily tasks. Show confidence, even without experience and always ask questions. (You can KZread legal assistant interview Q&A) Always look for red flags. Not all law firms are the same.

I work in family law. Tip? Look at firm reviews before your start working with the firm. Go on google, Avvo, Yelp. It will give you an idea of the type of attorney you're going to work with. Be empathetic, be honest, actually care about the clients because they will run to you for support both emotionally(regarding their case) and professionally.

Is it a good idea to wear black as that's the 'colour of law attire'?

  • @redlipsteph6484

I definitely do not recommend wearing all black. If you decide to wear black slacks or a black pencil skirt, it would be a good idea to pair it with a colored shirt. As long as you dress conservatively, you will be fine. Hope this helps!

@@redlipsteph6484 I’d agree with this. The attorney I work for wears very little black. Yesterday she wore navy pants, green shirt with accents of navy and blush in the print, and a blush blazer. She likes color, but still dresses fairly conservatively. She’s rarely in court (she does estate planning and probate law), so likes to have a bit more fun with her clothes.
