What I loved most about this video is how you guys encouraged each other and truly believed in one another!

I lived in Big Sky the first year of the Tram. The whole reason it was sketchy for you guys is that you’re doing stop shots every turn! Keep the momentum going and flow more and you’ll find your fear is unwarranted. Keeping the flow let’s you control more than trying to stop. That’s a lesson from experience. I did the Big at least 50 times the first season.

I spent a few months there over three seasons, when it was open you just ski it, had it when it was closed, the head ski patroller Jimbo and I did it together, still just skied it fast, loving it

80 to 90% of the people who do it probably shouldn’t. You learn from following people quickly, but if they aren’t there you have to do it yourself and learn from you’re mistakes.

People will criticize the way you dropped in. Fuck em. Anyone with the confidence and ability to ski terrain like this deserves respect. IT’s physically demanding and requires a very strong mental to ski yourself out of dangerous terrain like this.

Finally a video that shows what it's really like! And this looked liked pretty decent snow actually. Anything less and I'd never attempt it. It'd be less scary and potentially enjoyable on a filled up powder day though!

Do u have a log book you put this accomplishment in? It's just lame to ski it on such bad snow but you got down it so "log it."

You guys did just fine here. I live just a stones throw away. I did all that stuff almost 30 yrs ago. Sometimes I still go on the steeps. Been skiing most of my life. Now enjoy skiing with my kids and grand kids.Happy new year and welcome to Montana.

We used to have to hike up it to ski it! Feels a lot safer with skis on. You guys did great and your vid is genuinely what it’s like to come down almost 1,500’ at 48-52%. It’s sketch and gnarly and a rite of passage!!

@@justinmtbiking yea, I hiked it three times and did it twice back and the Little Couloir (which was terrifying) back in the early 80’s. Much better with the Tram. Took my son on it four years ago when he had just turned 11. Fog rolled in about a third of the way down and it was icy (early April). Not ideal, but he wanted to do it and loved it (I’d already taken him and my daughter down NS Snowfield, BRT a bunch, Pinnacles, Little Gullies, First Gully, etc. so he was ready. We tried for three days and they kept closing it, but on the last day we got in. I grew up there - my family is the oldest one there (since 72). 😁

Was out at Big Sky a couple years back and could only look up at Big in awe. Rode Upper Pinnacles and Three Moons, but Big was and is out of my league. Loved your decent, and thanks for not making it look too easy 😂

I was at Big Sky a couple weeks ago and from the top of the Powder Six lift, Big Coulier completely towers over you. It looks terrifying. Amazing job to both of you and glad you made it down safely.

Haha thanks! It was definitely sketchy! Ha. The drop in was the sketchiest part, there was a lot of rocks.

Good work. I saw a few videos of awful falls.... I was going to ski it until I heard a 45 min wait(I had 2 hours of family free skiing so I was not about to spend it waiting to ski). I skied the Otter Slide "triple black", but it wasnt half as hard as what you skied. It was one of the best runs of my life. Big Sky is an amazing place. One knock would be the sneaky rocks you hit on the double black terrain even with good snowfall due to the wind.... Especially under the Challenger chair.

i like this video, because it reminds me of my past, when i started to ski down steep slopes back in 2018, even i have not skied for almost 4 years now, i feel you are using your left pole lots of better than right at the slope.

I have been skiing for 34 years now. Mostly in New England. One thing I leaned about the steeps, it is not about form or flow at all - but CONTROL! Side slip and use the jump turn and take on the steeps a bite at a time. Do rest every 50 - 100 yards or so. Don't let your legs fatigue! Good job!

When skiing steeps like that and you need to jump turn by first planting your pole down the fall line it will unload the tail so that it makes it easier to jump turn. But you took your turns the way that I would have. Good on you guys for conquering your fears!

People will criticize.....they are always better. Definitely a high consequence area....you guys manned up and made the descent....and should be proud. Most of the ones ragging prolly have never really ridden terrain like this. You know if you have.....it can gnarly REAL quick.

Well done boys for getting down without the aid of a blood wagon. Did lots of Chutes in Squaw , Whistler and JH. Never saw powder in any of them...just styrofoam. And were all tracked out.... Only in Chamonix and La Grave did I ever get couloirs with Powder, and you then wish you were back on the styrofoam again.!!

You survived, looked like you got a little comfortable after a while.

I skied for the first time last week. Had a blast, but I know my limits, and I plan on sticking to them. Not too keen on the whole snapping ankles and breaking bones. More interested in having a good time and a good hard drink afterwards 😂

Snow looked really good.

@@justinmtbiking You crank down on those buckles and cut off your circulation. I bet you had your toes curled hard, and I don't blame you on that terrain. Curled toes though equal tight soleus, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius muscles. I get tightening up on sketchy terrain, but some toe exercises on groomers might help you relax and have more strength and power. Sorry, I'm a master boot fitter, Boot Dynamics, out of the park city area. I dug the narration. Looking forward to your next post.

Sorry, but this does accurately portray how steep Schmitty's is - it's twice as steep as this looks. And this footage is about as good as you can get, too. The exposure is true slide-for-life consequences. You both did a good job getting through. Suggestion: don't go straight down the center where everybody else goes and therefore scrapes any soft snow off. Go way off to the sides (like you did 2:00 - 2:12ish and at 4:54) to grab snow that you can put edge in and control the descent. Just being a ski-length left or right of center can make all the difference. It takes a bit of practice, but it's a lot safer than a 50 degree ice rink! (Also - it seems that the group in front of you is ALWAYS still in the couloir when you arrive at the top!) Great job to both of you!

I consider myself a fairly accomplished snowboarder (I know, not a skier, judge me all you want but it's close enough to the same thing). I routinely ride double blacks, and rarely feel like a trail is beyond my skill level. That being said, just WATCHING this video made me feel uneasy. That trail looks SUPER sketch. Full credit to both of you for completing that run without a wipeout, I do not believe I could have gotten through that unscathed.

yes it is pretty steep, Ive skied steeper but this is a chute. Snow was alright, pretty velvety up top, then it was thick

@@justinmtbiking Those deathwishes? How poetic given you almost lost your edge at the worst possible moment. Great recovery and finish. What setting do you use to capture it? Superview or regular?

Plant those poles a little ways out in front of you, keep your shoulders across the hill (fall line), turn around your pole plants. Use the troughs of the bumps to help check speed. Side slipping turns it into an icey mess, not to mention exposing rocks. Practice keeping within a narrow path on a different steep slope and then go attack these! Keep it up, you'll be eating these up.

Conditions weren’t the best, the rocks dropping in weren’t there when I skied and you coul😊d ski up the side😊walls but at least the cliff at the top third was covered by snow or you’d have a 15-20’ foot drop. Still you did good as it’s a 50 degree slope or more depending on how much snow has filled it in.

A classic skiing moment: “dude, we so got this!” Followed seconds later by “almost died right there, this is cray..”

Those looked pretty close to ideal. You don't really get uncut rope drops in there because of avy mitigation and patrol checking it out first.

@@justinmtbiking And January 3 explains the exposed terrain; I'd say conditions were damn fine for early January. Thanks! If you've never heard of Beartooth Basin, look it up. A mile into WY from MT, it's only open in June, and the stoke & spirit there is the best I've ever experienced.

A unsolicited suggestion…put more flex into the front of your boots, roll your hips towards the slope and position your body so it’s perpendicular to the slope angle…you’ll stick to the mountain like a magnet When you want to turn…as you cut across the slope…step your up hill out and at an angle, weight it and it’ll carry you through the acceleration phase quickly…but keep pressure on the front of your boots otherwise you’ll end up in the back seat…again😜

Good advice. Also his friend would conserve a lot of energy by not jump turning and instead plant the pole and turn around the pole. The guy making the video did that well. But his buddy didn't and some of his jump turns were sketchy.

Haven't skied in 30yrs. Can't get over how short skis are these days. Back then you couldn't ski half the mountain if your skis were shorter than 185.

The actual running length of the edge is longer than the ski height because of the shape. Lots of changes in 30 years. I just came back from Zermatt and they were skiing even shorter skis than what we ski in New England. Guys much bigger than me were skiing skis shorter than mine.

Well done you and we all have to start somewhere. I'd be well pleased if I did that. Seems like a lot of commentators must have never struggled on a run or had any fear whatsoever. I can't work out how they got to the level they are at. They must just be 100% natural skiers that never made a mistake, are always in control and just float like angels.

Lots of comments here, great work getting down. To echo a couple others, try to get more decisive while stomping each turn and then hoping/jumping into next one, stomp, repeat. Your turns are a bit slow and drawn out, that causes you to gain more speed than you probably want throughout the long turn, and this leads to less control (and greater chance of catching something like you did on that one that spun you). Quick, short, stompy turns will help a lot.

Dude you had a sick entrance though you got down around the knuckle pinch above the cheese grater man I can’t wait to get my cooler footage up for a second there I thought it was Justin netter making this vide.

The one day I got to ski the big couloir. The visibility was absolute shit. Couldn’t see more then 10 feet In front of you. But got to lap it a few times since nobody else was stupid enough to ski it. Would love to ski it on a bluebird day.

Apropos the negative comments, it was a reach, but skiing things that are a reach but within your capabilities is how you get better. That plus lessons, even into level 8, plus getting as many days on the hill as you can is how you get better. The ability to assess the salient risks (where you're likeliest to get into trouble) and the consequences of a fall in the varying risk areas are skills themselves that are as crucial as technical skills, and are also learned by experience and instruction. Did they own this drop? No, but it was not survival skiing either. And when they got to the outrun, they were better skiers than they were at the top. And remember... the best skier or rider on the hill is the one who's having the most fun.
